Heenan sold Hogan's heel turn and the threat of the NWO. He does not get enough credit for still being a heel for most of the talent, but when the NWO, he was pro-face. It add to the somewhat realism of the NWO. I do agree the talking about the main event while the mid-card was amazing in the ring was one of the worst things about WCW. Yet, it was no different when Jim Ross talked about Austin in almost every match during Attitude era.
I have been waiting for this DVD for a long time and it delivered. I would have preferred another hour to cover Bret leaving for WCW, Sting as the top face and a number of other things. Still, for an hour and 45 minutes they covered a bunch of stuff that I thought would never be discussed. The fingerpoke of Doom, Nash booking, the in fighting with the Crocketts and Cowboy Bill Watts. I am very impressed that they got the people they did for the DVD. I understand people want Eric and Hogan to be in it, but you already have their views on it, no need to pay them more for saying almost the exact same thing. It would have been more ballsy to get Russo. Speaking of Russo, Rey defending him a bit was surprising. Its stuff like that made it cool. A very good DVD and I am going to start watching the matches today. I do hope we get a Nitro 3 Disc in the future with more promos and storylines.

Fair point about Heenan, but he did also futz up the big Hogan heel turn by immediately crowing "But whose side is he on?" as soon as Hogan hit the ring.

I never thought that was as big a screw-up as everyone else seems to. Given the nature of what was happening and Heenan's dislike for Hogan, it was a realistic reaction. I hate when the announcers are made to look stupid by having to be oblivious to obvious possibilities.

Heenan actually responded to this criticism in his first book. He said that by this the time this match came around, he had been the heel announcer bashing Hogan for about 20 years straight (dating back to the AWA), and it would be completely ridiculous for him to suddenly cheer and praise Hogan for showing up to save the day.

I just tihnk there was probbably a better way to heel it up than for Heenan to immediately question Hogan's loyalties. He didn't *have* to cheer him on.
Also, this was 1996, waaaay before the "shocking swerve" became a twice-weekly event, and Heenan not guessing that Hogan was going to turn would hardly damage his credibility. The guy had ostensibly been North America's biggest babyface for well over a decade, so the sheer out-of-nowhere shock of the turn was the major selling point. "But wose side is he on?" was a bit of a dampener on that first big legdrop, in my opinion. But we'll agree to disagree.

I remember Heenan explaining to the audience weeks after the Hogan turn that just because he was right about Hogan doesn't make him friends with the humanoids. I liked that.
Was Heenan a commentator the night Goldberg beat Hogan? I need to hear him call that match again if he was.

Heeenan's best work as a commentator was during the NWO storyline. As much as people love him with Guerilla, he really sold that storyline better then anyone else. I will say I also thought it was logical for Heenan to comment if Hogan was going to turn or not since he hated Hogan for years. He just happened to get it right that night as oppossed to the other million nights where he question Hogan's heart and loyalty. His announcing for Goldberg/Hogan was off the charts great.

I think it was on that Nitro after BaTB where Heenan said something to the effect of "don't think I'm a good guy now" in regards to his feelings on Hogan.

Been watching the documentary online, and the one thing I can say is how GREAT it was to include all the footage of the old Mid Atlantic days, and old Georgia Championship wrestling. And, seeing the single ugliest belt, the old Mid South North American Title on Magnum TA made me giddy.

If anything the DVD made me remember that some of those old days from 98 - 2000 were so bad they were great. They had some great stuff tucked into those 3 hours. Juventud, Blitzkrieg, Malenko, Raven, Benoit, Mysterio and Kidman, Shane Douglas, and much more. Hell, I remember loving Vampiro back when they paired him with ICP. You never knew what direction they were going so you could just enjoy the matches for what they were.

I loved Heenan's commentary in this thing. And of course after Hogan turned he yelled out that he knew it all along that Hogan couldn't be trusted.
Cajunman, that video showed all that is good and bad with WCW back then. The fingerpoke itself was genius. The crowd bought into it. I thought the commentary was good. They are setting it up like something epic and then..that happens.
The bad of course is that before you knew it the nWo was all over the place again, in a gazillion colors and factions.
This to me was the final time the whole thing was entertaining.

They did the same when Hogan turned for the first time.
Here too, at that very moment the crowd was going wild and not so much in a bad way. Heat it heat. If they had managed to follow it up in a smart way things wouldn't have spiraled down (not that they were doing well at that point anyways) It is the fact that right again they went into nwo version 25,000 with a whole bunch of guys standing there and spouting their mouths that fucked it up.
