To me, if he used any other name (Allah, Buddha, Ganesh, Xenu, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster) it would just be weird. Not offensive, but just odd for a Christian to invoke the name of a god from another religion. I think him saying "Allah" would have made (slightly) more news because people would try to spin it and analyze it and try to find out "What did he REALLY mean."

I feel like this is getting more attention than it needs to have. Like others have said "Jesus Christ!" and "Oh my God!" have just been absorbed into the slang of the American English Language (I won't speak for the other English speaking countries of the world).

Just for full disclosure, I am now an ordained minister. Yes, it's from an "Ordaining mill" for lack of a better term, but I have sufficient papers and identification from this church that I can now preside over weddings (which is why I did it) in Maryland* and DC (In VA, it's a grey area where I'd likely lose the fight). I now have been getting mail with the prefix "Rev." on my name. I think it's a testament to how Christianity today doesn't really take itself TOO seriously and/or is taken seriously by the public at large. I don't know much about Islam, but I'm sure I can't become a mullah nor imam over the internet. If I did, I'm sure there would be an outcry about it, especially in the Middle East. Here, getting ordained on the net it's a good way for a church to make $35 a pop. The ordaining was free. Getting the credentials costs money.

I personally don't believe in ANY organized religion. I am very spiritual in my own way and I wasn't religious as a child but it was a thought experiment by my highschool psyche teacher that really made me question all organized religions.

He posed the question: "If a person seriously claimed to have conversations with little green men who live on his fridge, you'd think he has mental problems, right? What if I changed 'little green men who live on his fridge' to 'Jesus Christ'...is he still crazy?"

No one had an answer that could satisfy everyone in the class. Now that I think back, if this happened now and not like it did back in the early 90s, there would be lawsuits and firings over discussing that topic in class, but that is a discussion for another topic.

*Technically, anyone can officiate a wedding in Maryland, but if they're not a county clerk, or a minister in good standing, they'll be arrested for it. The marriage will stand.

People take offense to that because it using a word that has the generally understood meaning of "Homosexual" and it being turned around to mean "stupid" or "dumb". I see where it comes from as back in the 80s, my dad called odd things "Queer" and that probably evolved.

Alot of people out there contend that homosexuality is genetic and not environmental and therefore it isn't a choice and you're abusing them as if you were being racist.

The difference, to me, is that religion isn't genetic, it's environmental. Unless you're Michael Jackson, you're not going to change your race. You're pretty much stuck in the skin you have. Many people have changed religions. Cassius Clay, Lew Alcindor, Cat Stevens, Richard Tiffany Gere. All of them were raised one way and made a conscious choice to go a different direction.

I alluded to the fact that I don't know many Christians because there is a huge Jewish population in this area and also most of my friends are ex-Christians and ex-Jewish that have move on to other religious/spiritual paths that have suited their needs better.

This was way longer and more rambling than I wanted it to be, so I will leave it with this. I don't really think I can add more than I have w/o repeating myself or others.

Thanks to my thyroid shutting down, I'm not a clear with my thoughts as I have been in the past. Stop laughing, I had a lucid post or two before.

There is no time to explain, let me sum up:

This Biden comment isn't being made into a big deal because the President offered an opinion that arresting someone for breaking into their own home (showing "Contempt of Cop") was the police acting stupidly (Hey, I know that guy!). This gave our wonderful media a nice new shiny (as old as the republic itself) issue of maybe we're not a post-racial society after all (America has racial problems in 2009? Go on...)

Also we're just getting around to putting down the persisting rumors that the President of the United States is secretly an African muslim Indonesian illegal undocumented immigrant (Orly?) Because if he was legit, he would have a proper birth certificate, not this shady Certificate of Live Birth (Alan Keyes *is Inspector Javert). Fortunately, just before the birthers got to introduce legislation requiring Pres. Obama to present proof (the exact same document that was posted on the internet about a year ago) if he wants to run for reelection, the counter-birthers snuck in a resolution that worked Obama's birth into a proclamation marking 50 years of Hawaiian statehood (378-0, w00t!)

And now that these two nontroversies are about cleared up, we can get back to explaining to the American public that President Obama's healthcare plan (which doesn't exist, there are about 4-6 bills being reported out of various House and Senate committees) includes a provision to kill elderly people (encourage people on Medicare to draft a 'living will' - which the government has been doing for at least 20 years).

And on the Mohammed bit?

I thought everyone knows that it would be big trouble unless Biden said 'Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, Iran gets the nuclear weapon, who goes first?' The PBUH makes it all good.

I think I see AWA's point.
I don't feel the way he does, but I see his point.

Imo this is not about Biden saying 'Jesus Christ'.
It is about the fact that he feels it is wrong for a highly public person to use that name in that way as it goes against the believes/convictions of a large group of people.

Much like a Muslim would feel offended if a (different but at the same level) public person would use the name of their God/Prophet. Unless they do what TheOldMan suggested, the Peace be upon Him thing.

And yes, the difference is in the fact that in general Christianity has decided to be more erhmm..tolerant of the way people talk about their religion.

Also, saying Jesus Christ as an invective is not taking the Lord's name in vain. "Christ" is a title (it means King), and Jesus is the latin form of his name.

None of this really matters, because you're actually not supposed to be taking Yahweh/Jehovah's name in vain, not Jesus/Jeshua's.

If Biden (as Putin) had said "Allahu Akbar! Iran has The Bomb!" (and FoxNews didn't jump all over him for being a secret Muslim) my feelings would be the same.

I've often wondered why Christians (Catholics especially) don't seem to think they're breaking the first commandment when they worship Jesus above God. And no "The Holy Trinity" explanation doesn't cut it, because in most church services it's 96% Jesus, 3.7% God and .3% Holy Spirit/Ghost.

Edited to take "God" out of the Yahweh/Jehovah bit, as it's a title, not a name. (and to remove the weird capital S in the middle of Muslim. [the original post is quoted below, in case you prefer it.])

Ummm, actually it *does* cut it, as the "Holy Trinity" explanation says that they're all the same. Essentially, Jesus is humanity's direct link/conduit to God.

I do like your percentages though - and that's amusingly pretty accurate! Makes me want to make a poster for a Charismatic Mass - "Now with 4.7% more Holy Spirit!"

I guess I see it as more a "not seeing the forest for the trees" moment. Also, I can't stand people who need to be entertained while at church. Stupid megachurches.

Poor Holy Spirit, he was a main-eventer for the longest time then, as usual, the promoter's son comes along and takes his spot.

Ironically, the Holy Spirit then used Jesus' name as an epithet.
