Sensing an opportunity to move product, Amazon MP3's editors have put together a Top 50 of 2009 (so far) list. I'm reprinting it here in the hopes that it will encourage discussion (but remain pessimistic). I will try very hard to tell you what I'VE heard out of this list some time this weekend if that gets you interested at all.
EDIT: I should mention that if you're interested in seeing Amazon's version of these pages, or would like to buy actual physical CD copies of these songs instead of digital versions, we got that covered too. Just click right here (amazon.com)

I've been pleasantly surprised about just how much of a grower Merriweather Post Pavilion is. By this time last year, the hype around Vampire Weekend had tapered somewhat. However, this release has really developed an aura of its very own. The songs on this album take you to a place where you are being directly launched from the deepest ocean to Mars in your own personal pod. You can see the research the group went through, especially on the track "Guys Eyes" which could have been a track off of a Beach Boys album. There's a song called "Bluish" on the album that I can't whether it's a better wedding or funeral song. Either way, it is awesome enough to get people to play straight piano covers of it.
MPP is the best album of the year. My Girls is the best song of the year, and this with Strawberry Jam is the best 1-2 album combo since Radiohead (although they threepeated) Anybody who tells you otherwise is either a liar, deaf, oooold, or dating me.
Postscript: Marianne Faithfull should NOT be singing Decemberists songs.

I dislike the singles of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I hated Maps, and I strongly dislike Zero. I can't judge the album. I do love the Panic Switch song by the Silversun Pickups though. Finally, I am elated to see I'm On A Boat on that list.

Living in Cambodia, my music-gathering abilities have been greatly hindered because it can be difficult to find an Internet connection fast enough to download anything. So I haven't heard as much new music as I would like. That said, here are my brief thoughts on the four albums on this list that I've heard in full:
This album is AWESOME. I love Neko Case's voice, and the vocals in this are good. I like her lyrics, too. Probably my second-favorite album of hers. I like the title track and "This Tornado has Loved You."
I really liked last year's Chunk of Change, and this was a good follow up. I didn't like it at first, but the album's got some good beats and, again, I like the vocals. But that's a totally subjective thing.
Good, but not especially noteworthy. The only other album of his I have is as self-titled one from 2006, and this one is considerably more folky than that is.

Nice call. This album is so much better than it has any right to be. The song "Witch" would be the next James Bond theme if there was any justice in the world.

I really like "Love Letter to Japan" but the rest of the album tends to slide by without me really noticing.
The only other one I have is the new Neko Case -- good album; I don't like it as much as Fox Confessor or Furnace Room.
I don't have the new Amadou & Mariam, but I did like the last one even though Manu Chao's production style is a little heavy handed (which is to say, it kinda sounds like a Manu Chao album).
