| #1 Posted on 8.6.09 2214.15 Reposted on: 8.6.16 2214.19 | TONIGHT: We have a new champion after Extreme Rules: Batista. He’ll open the show this week, but with surgery needed on his torn biceps, how long will he be champion? Also slated for tonight is, finally, a one-on-one match between The Miz and John Cena. And in a Divas Championship re-match, Maryse takes on Kelly Kelly. -WWE Open.
-Highlights of the Batista vs. Randy Orton feud aired, with some slow-mo action from last night’s match as well.
-To the arena, where Lilian Garcia introduced Batista. He was dressed all in black for the occasion. Batista, for those who don’t know, helpfully noted that he beat the hell out of Randy Orton last night to become a five-time champion. He addressed Ric Flair and said he did this for him. He also did it for those watching the show at home, apparently, and for everyone who is sick and tired of Orton. He did say this was only the beginning, saying Orton has hurt a lot of people, and he’s going to hurt him back. Batista said he was going to take Orton’s pride and dignity....then Orton’s music interrupted and he had a look of shock and anger on his face. Disturbed too, thanks King!
In the ring, Batista made sure to keep watch around him to make sure the rest of Legacy wasn’t going to jump him from behind as Orton slowly stalked to the ring. DiBiase and Rhodes did end up coming out of the crowd with a chair and Batista was able to hold his own. He got Orton up for the Batista Bomb, but DiBiase hit him in the arm with a chair. They concentrated on that arm, as Legacy held Batista down and Orton put a chair around Batista’s arm and stomped it multiple times. Orton bent the arm back and continued the assault. King begged for help for Batista on commentary as Orton took the title and held it above his head. Trainers and refs finally tended to Batista when Legacy left the ring.
[Commercial Break]
-Batista was being helped out of the building by medics, and he said he can’t feel his arm. He also hinted that it may be broken. They secured him on a stretcher, then placed him in an ambulance. The last thing he asked for before the doors were shut were for them to get his title.
-They showed a replay of what happened moments ago. Cole and Lawler then discussed the situation, shown on camera.
(1) Kofi Kingston vs. William Regal Lilian introduced Kingston as Intercontinental Champion. Seriously? Give her note cards or something. Regal came to the ring with a mic and said the last thing we need in these trying times is a Jamaican as U.S. Champion. Regal said he could be our savior if he was champion. Someone tell him it’s just the U.S. Title.
Regal was on offense for the first minute or so. Kofi tried to fight back out of the corner and hit a few chops and a kick to the temple. Regal missed a running knee, but then Kofi missed a Trouble in Paradise. After a strike by Regal, Kingston hit his finisher out of nowhere for the win.
Winner: Kingston, at 2:05. Well, it’s something different than the challenger always winning in a non-title match. Good while it lasted.
-Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase were trying to convince Orton that Batista is gone for good now. Josh Mathews walked in and asked Orton about what happened. Orton said he put Batista away and that he’s going to use his rematch clause tonight- Batista will have to face him or forfeit. Orton said one way or another, he’ll be WWE Champion by the end of the night.
-Still to come this evening, John Cena faces The Miz.
[Commercial Break]
(2) Kelly Kelly vs. Maryse- Divas Championship Match Before the match, Mickie James came out to do guest commentary. I’m glad they didn’t forget about her feud with Maryse. The ladies went to the mat on a lock-up in a bizarre looking situation. It broke with neither woman getting the advantage. Kelly came in with a forearm. Maryse flipped Kelly, who landed on her feet, then the Divas double-clotheslined each other. Back-breaker by Maryse for two, while she was staring at Mickie at ringside. Kelly came back with a few clotheslines and a cross-body off the second rope. Cover only got two. Frankensteiner for two. Maryse pulled Kelly’s foot off the second rope, though it looked like Kelly was on her way down before Maryse touched her. DDT by the Divas Champ, then another erotic pinning predicament allowed her to retain.
Winner: Maryse, at 2:53. Mickie wasn’t great on commentary. Match was a bit awkward.
Maryse physically taunted Kelly after the match until Mickie came in and Maryse walked away.
-The WWE Championship is supposedly on the line, with Batista defending against Randy Orton.
[Commercial Break- Next week’s Raw is a three-hour “three for all” where the top championship from each brand is defended.] -King thanked “Sick Puppies” for lending their song to WWE for the theme to Extreme Rules, then plugged PPV coverage on WWE.com.
-Cole and Lawler sent it to clips of the Hog Pen match from last night.
-Josh Mathews was standing by backstage with Vickie Guerrero. He asked her about Orton invoking his rematch clause, and she said it’s true, and it will happen tonight. Vickie said she thinks Batista will be back and that the match will go on. Vickie said that if Batista is not here, and Batista can’t answer the count of ten, Orton will be awarded the title by forfeit. Then she said she had a huge announcement that would change the face of Raw forever.
-Maryse was backstage when The Miz came up to her. Miz told her not to worry because Mickie isn’t around. Miz said she had the same look on her face that Cena gets when he’s around. Maryse spoke French and Miz said it was hot. She said he was a good talker, yet she hasn’t seen him beat Cena. Until he does something, she said, they have nothing. He suggested she watch his match with Cena tonight because he’s the Miz and he’s awesome.
-Santino Marella made his entrance for six-man tag action. Then Goldust, Festus and Hornswoggle came out together to Finlay’s jolly music. I can’t wait for this one. [Commercial Break]
(3) Santino Marella & Goldust & Festus vs. Chavo Guerrero & Jamie Noble & The Brian Kendrick Festus cleaned house at the outset, including splashing Kendrick. Tag to Santino, who took out Kendrick’s leg. Kendrick nailed him and Santino tagged in Goldust. Goldust got distracted by Noble, allowing Kendrick to get a kick in and make the tag to Chavo. Chavo hammered away on Goldy as Horny cheered him on. Noble tagged in and went to work on Goldust himself. He worked Goldust’s left arm. Santino punched Noble and Goldust hit an inverted atomic drop, then tagged Marella. Santino seemed surprised by his own offensive prowess. He planted Noble on his back, but both Chavo and Kendrick broke it up. It became a pier-sixer at this point. Kendrick threw Hornswoggle in the ring but Goldust took out Kendrick. Horny stepped on Noble’s foot then dove onto Kendrick on the outside. Noble got rolled up for the three.
Winners: Marella, Goldust & Festus, at 3:49.
-Cena was walking backstage....he faces Miz next.
-Later on, Orton faces Batista for the WWE Title.
[Commercial Break]
(4) The Miz vs. John Cena Miz’s music interrupted Lilian’s announcement of the match. Miz worked the stick and said this was the night everyone has been waiting for: a one-on-one match with Cena. Miz said it’s not his fault he hasn’t been able to back up his trash talk of Cena, as Cena hasn’t responded to his challenges. He insulted the Cena apologists who have made excuses for Cena. He called Cena the most overrated athlete in the history of WWE. Miz said Cena isn’t Tim Allen, but it’s about to be “Tool Time.” Al Borland should make an appearance: “I don’t think so, Miz.” Before the match began, and after Cena made his entrance, The Big Show walked out. Cena attacked Miz as Show stood on the apron, allowing Show to come back into the ring. Cena got him up for an FU, but couldn’t finish the job. Show took Cena down and applied the back-breaker submission move. Miz came in and belted Show with several chair shots to the back and head (but Show got his hands up). Then he yelled at Cena and hit him in the back with a chair. Show got up and Miz ran off.
Winner: No Match. I really hate to see this Cena/Show stuff continuing.
[Commercial Break]
-Cole and Lawler once again discussed the assault by Legacy on Batista, then showed clips of it from earlier.
-Coming up later tonight, Batista will face Orton for the title, or lose by forfeit.
(4) MVP vs. Matt Hardy MVP got on the mic and said if there’s a WWE Championship match on Raw next week, he better be “all up in that mix.” If there are any doubts, he said, he’d prove it tonight against Matt Hardy. Dude, you just lost the US Title LAST WEEK.
MVP got some knees to the but, then took Hardy down with a face-plant. Lawler tried to defend Hardy’s injury, but Cole questioned the authenticity of it. Hardy choked MVP on the middle rope, then got one on a pin attempt. MVP worked out of a rest-hold then landed an overhead throw. MVP belted Hardy with lefts and rights, then a “Ballin’!” elbowdrop for two. Kick in the corner missed, then a reverse DDT by Matt was good for a two-count. MVP went after the injured hand then hit the Playmaker for the win.
Winner: MVP, at 3:51.
-Vickie Guerrero was walking backstage. She’s coming out to make her big announcement next!
[Commercial Break]
-Another ad for the “three-for-all” show next week. It’s three hours.
-More discussion on the Orton vs. Batista situation, which morphed into Extreme Rules talk, specifically, the Hardy vs. Edge match and then Punk cashing in his MITB opportunity.
-Vickie Guerrero came to the ring. She did the “excuse me!” bit. She said people may be upset about Orton vs. Batsita for tonight, but she said the last thing on her mind is making any of us fans happy. Vickie reminded fans what she had to go through in the Hog Pen match last night. She said she has never been so humiliated or insulted in her life. Apparently, she looked to the fans for compassion and sympathy last night, but all she saw was people laughing at her. She must’ve been looking right at Cole and Lawler then. She screeched that she was ashamed of the fans and asked them where their decency and respect were. She was happy that the fans disagreed with her about the title match tonight. This is the most she has talked live, I believe. Vickie then said she came to a decision: She’s resigning as General Manager of Raw. Edge’s music hit and her husband limped his way to the ring.
Edge said that last night, he said some things, disrespectful things, in the heat of the moment that he never should have said. So he said he came out to apologize. He said a funny thing happened though- she quit, which means he doesn’t need to apologize and doesn’t need to continue with the marriage. Edge finally admitted he married Vickie for her power. He said she can’t help him be champion since she quit, so she’s worthless. Well, how could she help him get a title shot on Smackdown while she’s GM of Raw? Edge said when they went out, people thought she was his mother. Edge asked if Vickie thought people thought he could really be in love with a “she-beast.” That was actually funny for some reason. He said every time he kissed her, he had to run to the bathroom to dry heave. Edge said the saving grace is that they never consummated the marriage. “I want a divorce!” he said. Vickie then screamed in anger/sorrow. I couldn’t tell which it was. The fans sang the goodbye song to Vickie. This angle seems really last-minute. Is Vickie joining Umaga on the chopping block? And will Ric Flair return as new GM?
[Commercial Break]
-They showed Big Show and Miz attacking Cena earlier tonight.
-Josh Mathews was backstage with John Cena. Cena said he’s felt worse, but he can’t remember when. Cena said he thought his deal with Show was over after last night, but said it will be settled soon. He turned his attention to The Miz. He said Miz was trying to make a name for himself by picking on Cena, but he can’t respect how Miz always seems to have someone there to take care of his dirty work. He promised Miz they’d come face-to-face soon enough to find out how awesome Miz is.
-Team Priceless and the Unified Tag Champs made their entrance for the tag team contest that will take place next.
[Commercial Break]
(5) Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes vs. Primo & Carlito Rhodes had Primo in a bad way out of break, but Primo was able to enziguiri Cody and make the tag. Hey, the faces are in the lower right corner of the ring this time! Carlito went to work on Rhodes, but Cody got a headbutt to the mid-section. DiBiase cheap-shotted Carlito and Cody hit a DDT for two. DiBiase came in with a few Million Dollar fist-drops. Dropkick put Carlito on his back. Big boot to the face by DiBiase on the seated Carlito, then he knocked Primo off the apron. They double-teamed Carlito as Primo pleaded with the ref to turn around. DiBiase sent Carlito into the buckle, then hit a Russian legsweep for two. They isolated Carlito in the ring and kept him away from his corner. Rhodes got Carlito in a reverse chinlock, and the fans rallied behind the son of the Carribean Legend. He made the hot tag to Primo, who was all offense against DiBiase. After a distraction by Rhodes, Teddy rolled Primo up for two. Rhodes choked Primo on the top rope behind the ref’s back and DiBiase ended it with Dream Street, apparently earning them a tag title shot.
Winners: DiBiase & Rhodes, 6:22 shown. Good win for Team Priceless.
-Orton was walking backstage, WWE Title belt over his shoulder, ready for his “match” with Batista next.
[Commercial Break]
-Orton was in the midst of walking out for the main event. Teddy and Cody were already in the ring and Orton talked about them winning their match to earn a shot at the tag titles. More clips of Legacy’s attack from earlier. Orton said that Vickie made the championship rematch before she resigned and if Batista doesn’t answer the count of ten, he gets awarded the title.
(6) Randy Orton vs. Batista- WWE Championship Match After ring intros, they played Batista’s music. But no Dave. Referee Mike Chioda rang the bell and began the count. At six, they showed a camera backstage and the ambulance was there. The referee stopped the count at nine when he saw the ambulance on the big screen. Yeah, but Batista is still not out. Then, the camera went to a close-up of Triple H, who must’ve been somewhere backstage. Not the pop you’d expect for that. He was walking backstage with his sledgehammer, then his music played. Let’s get this out of the way first...
Winner: No match.
The Game fought off Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase with the sledgehammer on the ramp, then made his way to the ring for a meeting with Orton. Trips dropped the sledgehammer, took off his t-shirt and entered the ring. The two men brawled, with each getting the upper hand, but HHH’s was more sustained. It went to ringside, where Triple H punched Orton over into the timekeeper’s area. Orton got a chair, but Triple H kicked him in the gut. Hunter bounced Orton’s head off the announce table. And again. He pounded away at the skull of Orton, then, as he was about to use the TV monitor as a weapon, Orton kicked him in the gut. Orton tried to escape through the crowd, but Hunter caught him among the fans. He threw him into the railing and continued pummeling him in the brain. Orton was thrown back to ringside and in the ring, Hunter hit him with a spinebuster, then a steel chair to the skull. He continued to hit Orton with the chair in the back. He stepped on Orton’s head and took the steel chair right to Randy’s neck. Then he met Orton’s face on the mat and trash talked him. The fans chanted for the Pedigree. He picked Orton up and did one right on the chair. Trips flexed, then they played his music. He stood over Orton and gave him a crotch chop as the show ended. Promote this thread! | | Mayhem

That's the only explanation I can think of that doesn't fully enrage me. Bryan Alvarez was acting as if there was something weird going on with regards to the Batista story; he didn't think that the arm was too serious, and referred to it as a "cover story", IIRC.

Legacy finally gets to look like somewhat of a threat in the first ten minutes, only to look like a stable composed of Duane Gill, Barry Horowitz and Barry O at the end of the show by HHH (aka Superman, Jesus and The Incredible Hulk combined. The awful and , lets face it, embarrassing use of Vickie Guerrero. Mediocre wrestling; boring, soulless interview time; and a complete lack of character development. The list goes on and on. I am not trying to be all smarky or make some kind of protest, but RAW just doesnt seem to be worth watching any more. Smackdown still can bring it once and a while, and ECW has been kind of interesting lately, but for some reason RAW is just terrible week in and week out. The smark conspiracy theorist in me thinks its possible that management has decided to let RAW be HHH and his amazing friends playground so that he only kills one brand instead of the entire company. The realist in me thinks that wrestling as I knew it is dead, long dead, and this is all that is left. | used2bcool

Yeah, agreed. If this was a face turn, it was almost in bad taste. I know Vicki is an evil GM, but the acting from both and the things Edge said did nothing to build up any sympathy towards him, as such. I just think it's one of those one-shot one-heel-does-bad-things-to-another-heel segments.
God, what a terrible show. Kofi-Regal gets 2 minutes and Matt-MVP three minutes. Even the X-Division gets more time! Way to make the undercard seem important.
What the hell is up with the continued employment of Lillian Garcia? Bitch fucks up night in and night out. If they need a looker in that position, instead of say, someone who actually knows what they're doing, they can still get a random whore who at least has the wherewithal to properly read off the cards they feed her.

When Edge was running down his reasons for marrying Vickie didn't it seem awful close to another guy in the company marrying a woman with power?
The Miz mixing it up with the Big Show was unexpected and fun to see.

I had the same feeling. I thought he was going to turn face but because his run down of Vickie was so harsh, it felt like he was turning her face with that verbal assault.
Also, it is just me or has the crowd been dead quiet for MVP the last two weeks? There seems to be zero crowd reaction to his entrance, but they go apeshit for his ballin' move.
I also like the Cena-Miz-Show 3-way feud. After the assault on Show, I'm guessing Miz is solidly a Tweener now. I love his interactions with Maryse. Her reactions to his cockiness are awesome (pardon the pun). | InVerse

This was explained over on the Torch. It's because the Hardy/MVP match wasn't hyped before hand. According to their explanation, wrestlers have absolutely no responsibility regarding whether or not the crowd gets into their match, it's entirely a result of whether or not the match was advertised prior to occurring. If a match isn't hyped up before hand, the crowd assumes that the match isn't important and therefore sit on their hands the entire time. At least, that's how it was explained over on the Torch, so I'll assume they know more about it than me.
I too was dismayed at how easily HHH dispatched of Dibiase & Rhodes. It reminded me of the time he did the same thing to the Hardyz. Their heat went away so fast as a result that they ended up returning to backyward wrestling and were never heard from again. Wait, what?
Also, since it was humiliation at the hands of Santino Marella that caused Vicki to resign as general manager, I nominate Santino as the new GM of Raw. | Zeruel

That doesn't explain his zero reaction when he came out after Kofi last week. Kofi had a pretty nice pop. MVP, not so much. I thought it was just a fluke until last night. I didn't see the PPV, so I have no idea if the trend continued Sunday night. | lotjx

I do hope they make his shirt, so I can pick it up this week. Once again, Super Cena rears his ugly head. There should be no reason for Cena to show up after his beatdown. Raw has become so illogical and brain numbing that I wish that Vince would just move Smackdown to Monday so I can see it and send Raw to Friday, so it never shows up on my DirecTv, so I don't even have the option of viewing even by chance.
Raw is in North Carolina next week, Flair is the new GM. So, we can keep the Evolution story rolling even though it died three years ago and wasn't a great stable anyway.

MVP the gimmick is aging fast. The performer needs to tweak the "ballin" shtick, and I suggest dropping it entirely.
The Lovely Mrs. Tracker always enjoys seeing Kofi, but she was surprised by Mickie sounding so together and normal on commentary. I think she has a new favorite diva.
Show/Cena has got to go, and it seems like a natural shift for Cena to exit stage right and let Miz/Show clobber each other.
I'm still surprised to see Carlito as active in the ring these days, and I regret that Legacy is getting a push despite being as generic as humanly possible.
Kinda nice to see Hunter return, but the extended wallop drained my interest. | redsoxnation

And, having someone fly off the ropes onto Batista's arm while it was in the chair would have been quicker and more effective. Lillian needs to go. Are they developing some sort of relationship between Lawler and Matt Hardy, as that seems to be the only person Lawler slips back into heel announcer form for. Could Cena at least have grimaced a bit during his interview post beatdown? It has been almost 12 hours, have Rhodes and DiBiase moved yet? Final beatdown seemed so thorough that it looked like it was from the see you in 30 days precinct. |
