Nothing expresses that so clearly as titles like "A New Hope" and "The Attack of the Clones," or whatever it is. And then the critics act pissed because they're getting popcorn movies instead of Truffaut."

Not all arthouse movies are inherently good and not all popcorn movies are inherently bad.
Just like not all DC/Marvel comics are inherently bad and not all Fantagraphics/Oni/SLG books are inherently good.

LOL.
For the record, Mark Coale HATED AOTC, kids.
If anything, to go with your point, I can't remember the last time I saw a good popcorn movie. For me, "popcorn movie" has a negative connotation.
I just worry about good movies, I guess (there, I opened the door for a cheap shot, Mark ). | odessasteps

So, one could argue The Matrix would fit the bill, although given all the subtext, it might not.
a great little movie that most no one has heard of that I finally saw on DVD is "the Dish," about one of the satellites in Australia that helped broadcast the moon landing in 1969. No great pretenses, no A level stars (just Sam Neill), but a wonderful small picture.
