TONIGHT: WWE.com offers nothing, but we do have a new WWE Champion, Randy Orton. Triple H suffered a severe case of kicked in the head last night and may not be at this Raw (fingers crossed!). Plus, fall-out from the Beth-Santino-Santina deal maybe and will Matt Hardy address the loss to his brother? Raw’s cut-in of NCIS doesn’t give us much more, other than the fact that we’ll see what happened after John Cena went through a light and Randy Orton will be in the arena. Oh, and feel free to start a Raw thread next week......I’ll be at the arena in Buffalo for the show live.

-WWE Open.

-Vickie Guerrero was in the ring to start the show. She pimped her husband’s title win from last night, then introduced the new WWE Champion, Randy Orton. He walked out with his entourage. Sloowwwllllyyyy. He got on the turnbuckle and held the belt over his head. Finally, six minutes after the top of the hour, Orton got the mic and the “you suck” chants hit before he could even speak. He said the McMahon family is mourning because their champion as fallen. Orton talked about the damage he did to Hunter. Orton turned his vitriol on the fans, telling the youngsters (and those in their 20s) that they will amount to nothing. He then ripped the 30s and older crowd too. WWE addressing the fans that were cheering for Triple H’s downfall last night perhaps? He raised his voice when talking about the destruction of the McMahon family. That meant we had to sit through ANOTHER video package of him destroying each of them, including Triple H last night.

Vickie got on the mic again after the video and assured Orton that she was pleased he was representing the Raw brand as champion. She said he will defend his title in three weeks at Judgment Day. The opponent will be the winner of tonight’s Big Show vs. Batista match. She once again congratulated him. Orton told the fans they have no choice but to respect him. He said the same about the wrestlers in the locker room. He said Vickie may be GM, but everyone will answer to him. And if they don’t, they’ll have to answer to him. He said he doesn’t care if they’ve been in WWE for a day or for years.....then MVP came out. He stood on the top of the ramp and introduced himself to Orton. He said while Orton may be impressive, he doesn’t answer to anyone. “MVP” chants from the crowd as Ted Dibiase addressed him. Dibiase said Montel doesn’t seem to bright. He said if he doesn’t want his first night on Raw to be a disaster, he better turn around. Porter called Dibiase a lackey and said Orton didn’t give him permission to talk. MVP said this isn’t a dictatorship and he didn’t come to Raw to be talked down to. He said Orton won’t be champ forever because if Show or Batista don’t beat him at Judgment Day, he will be happy to. Cody Rhodes begged Orton to let he and Ted take care of this. Orton whispered something in Vickie’s ear and she made another match: For the first-time ever, the US Champion MVP vs. Randy Orton. This could be promising.

[Commercial Break]

-Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler were on camera, talking about the draft and the new superstars on Raw. They talked about Triple H, Hornswoggle and The Brian Kendrick.

(1) The Brian Kendrick vs. Kofi Kingston
Kendrick has a new sleeveles jacket. He had to correct Lilian Garcia for announcing him simply as “Brian Kendrick.” And he was too far down the ramp to see his dance! Kendrick slapped Kofi, but Kingston caught him before he could scamper out of the ring. Missile dropkick off the top for Kendrick got a two-count. Double-chop to the chest by Kingston and a standing kick. After his “boom, boom” legdrop, Kofi got a two-count. Heel kick by Kendrick for two. Sliced Bread #2 blocked and Kendrick rolled through a bodypress. Then he got hit with Trouble in Paradise for three.

Winner: Kingston, at 2:37. I would’ve liked to have seen Kendrick get the win and it can’t be a good sign that in his first match on Raw, he loses. But Kingston could’ve used a win as well, so he got it.

-Stills were shown of Big Show chokeslamming Cena through a 7,000 watt searchlight. Lawler said they still don’t know the condition of Cena, other than the fact that he may not be here on Raw tonight.

-Show and Vickie hugged backstage in her office and she thanked him for what he did last night. He thanked her for putting him in a #1 contender’s match tonight, then tried to kiss her. She backed away and Show was a bit miffed. He said it will get lonely on Raw. She said everything from here on out will be strictly professional. “You’re the boss,” said Show.

[Commercial Break]

(2) Santina, Kelly Kelly, Brie Bella, Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix, Rosa Mendes, Maryse, Jillian Hall
All the face Divas got separate entrances. Heels came out together. Did you ever notice how heel tag teams are always in the lower right side of the hard camera and the faces always tag on the upper left? What’s the deal with that? Santina and Beth started things off and Beth got a kick and a slap in before Brie tagged in while Santina screeched in pain. Jillian tagged in and Brie hid under the ring. The Bellas surprised Rosa when they both peeked out from under the ring. Then Hornswoggle did as well! Rosa ran halfway up the ramp. Beth and Maryse chased Horny back under the ring and when they checked under there, they got a face full of fire extinguisher. Santina tagged in and while Jillian was distracted by the outside happenings, she was rolled up for three.

Winners: Brie, Kelly, Santina and Mickie, at 1:41.

Hornswoggle looked up Santina’s dress after the match (she was standing on the apron) and ran up the ramp in disgust after seeing what he saw. Raw, the place for high-brow comedy at its finest.

-Coming up, The Big Show vs. Batista as well as MVP vs. Randy Orton.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler talked about more wrestlers drafted to Raw, including Mr. Kennedy, the Bella Twins and Matt Hardy.

-Speaking of, Matt Hardy came out limping and with a cast on his hand, up to almost his elbow from the broken hand he suffered last night. He got on the mic and called Jeff a barbarian for what he did last night. Matt said he suffered a broken hand as the result of Jeff’s actions. Matt said he did not quit and that he is not a quitter. He said he had no other option after Jeff broke his hand. Matt said he has no option tonight either, as he is being forced to wrestle and he is wrestling under protest. Doesn’t he need something over that hard cast? Can’t they give him a few days off? It IS a broken hand.

(3) Matt Hardy vs Goldust
Goldust AND Brian Kendrick on the show? Automatic thumbs up from me. Matt got into the ropes before they could lock up as Goldust tried to corner him. And again. Ultimately, Matt went to the apron and down to the outside. The ref had to hold Goldust back from going after Matt, which allowed Matt to sneak back in and clobber Goldust with the cast. Matt then pinned the Hollywood, California native.

Winner: Hardy, at 1:07. How is that even legal?

-Randy Orton was walking backstage. He’s headed to the ring to take on MVP next.

[Commercial Break]

(4) Randy Orton vs. MVP
Crowd seems to have trouble getting on the same page with their chants tonight. Clean break in the corner by Orton. Orton worked the arm as a few deep-voiced fans got a “Let’s go Randy” chant met with a “Randy sucks” chant. Orton with an evil look to the crowd, drawing boos. MVP blocked a punch and went to work with knees to the mid-section then a not-so-good knee-lift. Big uppercuts by Orton as Cole plugged Dolph Ziggler vs. MVP for the U.S. Title on Smackdown Friday night. Slow build here, but a deep arm-drag by MVP off a missed charge by the WWE champion. MVP landed a drop toe-hold on Orton, sending him face-first into the middle buckle. He followed it up with a running boot in the corner that sent Orton to the outside. You guessed it: Break time.

[Commercial Break]

Orton had MVP in a chin-lock out of break. Vintage Orton! MVP fought out, but fell victim to the Orton back-breaker for two. A battle of fisticuffs by Orton and MVP in the middle of the ring with the new “boo” “yay” trade-off that seems to be happening at EVERY show now. Thanks, England! “Ballin’!” elbowdrop by MVP for a hegothimnohedidn’t. MVP missed another corner kick and Orton dumped him to the floor. Through the crowd, Shane McMahon came out with a kendo stick and drilled Orton about a dozen times with it. Then, he landed an elbowdrop off the top before Dibiase and Rhodes came out to chase him off.

Winner: Orton via DQ (no bell), about 11:31. And MVP is forgotten about because we definitely needed another Shane-O-Mac attack. Throwing a future main-eventer to the curb so a non-wrestler and boss’s son can get his shots in. Disappointed.....doesn’t BEGIN to describe my feelings about this.

[Commercial Break-including plugging a Scramble match on Smackodwn to decide the next #1 contender- Morrison, Rey, Jericho, Khali and Jeff Hardy.]

-Lawler thanked The Veer Union for supplying the official Backlash theme song.

-They showed a replay of what just happened.

-More stills of Cena getting chokeslammed through the search light last night. Like Triple H, they said they weren’t sure how long Cena will be out for.

-More Raw draft picks talked about: Big Show, Maryse, Chavo Guerrero and The Miz.

-The Miz came out. Miz called himself the single most valuable draft pick in all of WWE. He said he was the face of MTV. He said if you Google his name, he’ll have more hits than anyone in the arena. Miz talked about all the famous women’s numbers he has in his phone. Then he said he’ll take down the biggest and baddest tonight. Then he challenged John Cena and asked for a referee. Miz said he knows Cena was hurt last night but told him to be a man and come out. Miz called him out again and Cena’s music hit. No one came out. Miz asked Cena if he was scared. He asked what he had to do to get Cena in the ring. He asked if he had to belittle him to do it. So he did. Crowd chanted for Cena. He said he can’t see Cena....because his movies aren’t in theaters long enough. Miz said he’s tired of seeing the same superstars in the main event week in and week out so he’s here to grab the brass ring. Miz said he challenged Cena tonight and Cena declined, making him winner by forfeit. Miz 1, Cena 0 said The Miz. He demanded that Lilian announce him as winner. She didn’t so he confronted her at ringside. He took the mic and did it himself.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed highlights of the European Tour from this past week.

(6) Carlito & Primo vs. Jamie Noble & Chavo Guerrero
I think this match was just to plug Carlito vs. Chavo on Superstars. Noble and Chavo were “currently in the ring.” Lawler said the tag champs can defend their titles on any show. Slow start to things but some double-teaming by the champs sped things up. Crowd wasn’t into the Colons much. Noble provided a distraction so Chavo could sneak attack Primo. Noble came in and landed a neck-breaker. Chavo came off the top but was dropkicked in mid-air by Primo. Both men made tags and Carlito fired away on Noble. Good athleticism as Carlito took down Noble and Primo dove onto Chavo. Back-stabber on Noble for three.

Winners: Carlito & Primo, at 4:27. Good action in this one.

-Backstage, Josh Mathews caught up to Batista and he asked the big man if he felt at all responsible for costing Triple H the WWE Championship last night. After a stare down on Josh, Batista said he knows what Trips is going through and it can’t be easy; but he’s going to go out there and beat Show tonight. Then he said he’d hurt Orton just like he hurt HHH and his family. He said he’d take away what means most to Orton: His WWE Championship.

[Commercial Break]

-Vickie Guerrero came out again. No wheelchair this week, for those of you scoring at home. She had an announcement but first, she wanted to remind us of recent current events. That means we got the video package of Orton taking out the McMahon family AGAIN. She said next week’s main event will be Randy Orton vs. Shane McMahon. Oh goody.

-Big Show came out for the main event. It’s next.

[Commercial Break]

(7) The Big Show vs. Batista- #1 Contender’s Match
Batista tried to lift Swho from behind, but it didn’t work. Show got him by the throat, but Batista countered it. He tried a Batista Bomb instead, but Show pushed away. They were at a stalemate when the show wen to its final break.

[Commercial Break]

Show just got up after a two-count on Batista out of break. Slaps to the chest followed by punches to the gut by the big man. Batista battled back with shoulders to the gut of Show in the corner. But a clubbing forearm sent The Animal back down. More body shots from Big Show. Elbowdrop to the lower back caused Batista to yelp in pain. Show sat on Batista’s back and wrenched the neck. Bear-hug applied by Big Show as I feel like falling asleep during this thing. Batista came back with a spinebuster. Batista walked into a chokeslam though, but he wisely slid under the bottom rope and outside. On the entrance ramp. John Cena staggered out, being held back by referee Marty Elias. Show went to walk toward him and got halfway up the ramp when he realized he was being counted out. He couldn’t make it in before ten.

Winner: Batista, via count-out, at 10:30. This could’ve been a train-wreck but they tried to do so little so as not to screw up that it bored me to tears.

Batista speared Big Show after the match for good measure. Show and Cena then did a stare down. “You’re mine!” screamed Big Show.

I think it was Show's fourth bearhug that did me in.

And g*ddammit MVP was starting to shine. And then poof. I'm sure glad Chris Jericho is on SD! now so that I can see more Shane McMahon.

This was the DEADEST crowd I have seen for a Raw in a long, long time. I don't blame them either. And another Cena vs Big Show feud?? Please say it ain't so. I don't think Miz is the answer either.

They just won't pull the trigger and give a huge push to MVP will they? He gets a good pop, then has to sneak into the back out of the camera for Shane O'Mac, who they are now overworking.

This Raw sucked, worst one in months.

Oh my GOD I can't believe Shane McMahon is still involved with Randy Orton. If there is a turn coming and one of the McMahons is part of Legacy, it's now way too late to pull the trigger. If not, this is completely pointless. They should give HHH a few weeks off, have him return at Judgment Day seeking revenge, and forget about Shane and Steph in the meantime. Batista vs Orton, while not exciting to me, doesn't need Shane McMahon.

Brushing MVP aside like that for Shane McMahon to extend a feud that has already gone too long was criminal.

I'm at least glad that MVP didn't eat the pin before the Shane run-in. A loss would've stalled MVP's momentum on Raw right out of the starting blocks, and even though losing to the world champ wouldn't have been a huge setback, this non-result at least opens the door for a future MVP title challenge.

Next week could very well be the end of Shane's latest run on Raw, as Orton hopefully will punt him out of action for a few months and concentrate on Batista.

Great line from Miz about Cena's movies. Also, it never hurts to ape the old 'Jericho vs. Goldberg' forfeit victory angle. Miz could even do this for a few more weeks and actually build up a mini-feud with Cena after the inevitable match with Big Show.

So on his first night on Raw, MVP went to a non-finish with the World Champion. And people are complaining? This is a guy who was jobbing to Kung Fu Naki four months ago. Give it time. I can understand rolling your eyes at yet more Shane, but I don't think they've done bad by MVP. Judging by the way he was positioned last night he's gonna get bumped up the card at some point soon.

They did this same thing with CM Punk (well, they still are, arguably) for a good while. They let him float around with the top guns, not necessarily looking dominant or even GOOD, and then he ended up with the world title at the end of the day. Same with RVD and that went on FOREVER, but he finally got the brass ring at the end. Ditto for Jeff Hardy, as brief as his title reign was.

Sure MVP didn't look good at the end of the night, but judging by the pattern, he's got a world championship in his future.

Shane McMahon ruined the best Randy Orton match that I have seen in what seems like years. I liked Shane a whole lot better when he was feuding with the upper midcar instead of the Main Eventers. MVP looks like he finally is putting it all together though.

The Miz's promo was a great bit. It had a little early heel Jericho to it, but it was a nice change. Hopefully, it doesn't end with him getting squashed in a two minute match that means nothing, because Cena starts staring at Legacy on the ramp.

I thought he looked just great tonight. He certainly wasn't made to look bad.
I'll be honest, I thought parts of Raw were very encouraging. It was great to see MVP and Miz portrayed as having initiative and hunger. Reminded me of 2000, when Jericho, the Dudleys et al would regularly intermingle with the ME. I also liked Matt getting time to just talk and be a heel, something that midcard guys rarely get to do any more.

My problem with the MVP-Orton match wasn't that they made MVP look bad - in fact, he looked pretty strong and it was almost without question the match of the night. But I just can't stand the bit they used to end the match. Things are moving toward the finish, and then BAM - MVP gets thrown out of the ring and into oblivion, and is never heard from again. He doesn't even get laid out with a finisher, or worked over by Legacy. It's such a routine part of a match, it's like a guy getting knocked out by a drop toe-hold. It's just a bad finish, unsatisfying in every way. When you have a guy run in and cause a DQ, but the other match participant is still in the ring or active after the finish, then he's still part of what's going on. When they disappear a guy though, they're literally saying, "hey, forget about this guy. He's not important anymore. Look over here." And I hate that.

Ironically, this was touched on last week when terms such as 'Bolivion' and 'Jobberspace' were thrown around. MVP landed there this week.

Right. It was a kissing your sister moment. It was great they had a fresh face in there, but when he was nowhere to be found at the end of the segment, and Shane looks like the hero. Why couldn't MVP at least help clear the ring? It was just bittersweet after a great promo to set it up. Loved the Abercrombie & Fitch line!

Nice promo from Miz too, but he needs to change up his look. Or at least get a new t-shirt.

As I rarely watch SmackDown, I was curious as to what the new guys would offer.

MVP can be/is immediately the top midcard face. I loved the visual of Shane standing on the railing at the top of the camera shot. The shame is that it was wasted on a McMahon.

Matt was OK. The Lovely Mrs. Tracker said simply "he got fat." THE Brian Kendrick could quickly move down to Nobleville.

Speaking of Noble and his match, the Colons are a fun team. I like a motivated Carlito. His springboard senton looked effortless.

The Miz had too much mic time, but he can work it. The Brie twins are easy on the eyes.

The Santina/Beth angle annoys most when Santina is portrayed as the face, and Beth the heel. Santino should not be a good guy.

The fresh match-ups is the show's highlight. Orton's promo would work better if he gave it more than deadpan delivery.

Interesting show we had here. Good to see MVP have such a good match with Randy, but as others have mentioned, it won't be worth anything if they don't follow up. As it stands, despite the length (which felt SmackDown-esque) it seems like it merely served as a backdrop to continued Shane involvement. I like Shane for the most part and he typically doesn't overstay his welcome, but damned if I wasn't pissed when MVP fell into JobberSpace because we really need to push that hot young talent Shane O' Mac.

I was confused about Santina as a face as well. That just seems wrong. And I'm tired of Diva tag matches. They book eight (and prior to WM as many as 16) women in one match, give it 3 minutes and only 3 of the participants get any semblance of offense and then it always ends in a roll up by joke/plucky non wrestler/valet character. I'm probably the biggest advocate for women's wrestling on most boards I frequent, but matches like that make me wish they'd just drop the pretense of their being an acutal division so I can stop getting my hopes up for anything good.

Did I mention how weird it still is that the most devestating move in all of WWE is Randy Orton kicking people in the head? A move so devestating that it doles out concussions and in rare cases the latent energy damages other parts of the victim's body?

Incidentally, why was the Randy Orton punt-a-thon replayed for a match between Show and Batista? It's bad enough that the announcers rarely comment on the match they're witnessing but now we get video packages hyping the guy not in the match about to take place - a video package that happened only an hour prior?

Miz did a good job with his promo time, but the cynic in me just knows it's a set up for Cena to squash him in two minutes the week before Judgement Day.

As mentioned, Kendrick has maybe another match before he's shuttled off to Nobleville.

I'll take a trainwreck over boring anyday of the week and that main event was boring. Oh my God! The bear hugs! That last one where Show was on his knees looked more like me begging my girlfriend for forgiveness after forgetting her birthday than it did a wrestling move. And there's just something heelish about anyone other than Rey Misterio winning a match by Count Out because at least he has the excuse of being the smallest guy on the roster.

All in all, some good stuff with the showcase of younger talent, but that main event and the videopackages just hurt the overall show.

The references to JobberSpace and Bolivion are cute and all, but at the end of the day I'd wager that MVP ain't the guy who's gonna get his face kicked off in next week's ME.
Really, the only complaint here seems to be that MVP didn't get to stand tall next to Shane. Do you guys really want him associated with a gurning 40 something idiot? He got one over on Orton verbally, then went toe-to-toe with him in the ring and for the most part came out on top. For me, that's a Damn good start for him on Raw.

Of course it won't be MVP. After all, the main event spot next week is reserved for the sporadically active son of the owner to continue his main event level angle where he is portrayed as the physical equal of the world champ. MVP will likely get to work a 4 minute match against either Rhodes/Dibiase or both. 50/50 odds THAT match ends with a save by either Batista or Shane.
