My parents are in their mid 60's and while gift shopping for my sister's Wii accessories bought themselves a Wii on the spur of the moment. I know nothing about this system and was wondering if there are many games that would appeal to an older crowd that doesn't play normal video games.

Are there any Ws out there whose parents enjoy the Wii? What games would you suggest for an older crowd that wouldn't be interested in the normal hack/slash or shoot'em up games?

My mom (58) loves her DS and I will probably get her a Wii for her birthday next year if she doesn't pick one up for herself first.

My dad bought himself a Wii too. He got Mario Kart and Guitar Hero and enjoys (and is terrible at) both. I brought over last year's Smackdown vs. Raw because I thought it might be simple enough for him (you basically shake the controls for all attacks) but it still scared him away. And, of course, he loves Wii Sports.

After all this time, Wii Sports is still the killer app and it's free with the system. Your folks might not need a second game for a while.

They might enjoy Wii Fit (The W at Amazon). That's what my mom really wants the system for. Big Brain Academy is another one that they might enjoy. I like the Price is Right game, but I am a bit weird like that. Animal Crossing is about as laid-back (and pointless) (and, tragically, addictive) as a game gets.

I am not a fan of Wii Play, and Wii Music has been getting pretty mixed reviews, but they might be worth investigating as well. But you never know. You could always try renting something like Mario Kart or Super Mario Galaxy or something and they might surprise you.

I have heard so many older people like Wii Sports. That right there is *the* game for them. Wii Play is fun, the whole family old and young love the racing cows.

The lovely Mrs. whatever (not old by any means whatsoever) is not a gamer and totally enjoys the Fitness games (Wii Fit, My Fitness Trainer). She also likes Mario Kart even though, God bless her, she is terrible at it.

My mom plays my niece's fishing game quite often (the name escapes me). Not sure if it translates the liking of actual fishing, but it's seems popular with the older kids.

And if they sing, there are some karaoke & American Idol games out there.

Smarty Pants because everyone loves trivia.

Boom Blox is inverse Jenga. Who doesn't dig that?

Also, they might actually dig Animal Crossing, which is low key and fun. Decorate a house, pick fruit, fish, write letters to/interact with other players. It's gaming/IM/e-mail at the same time. Kinda.

Boom Blox is simple and fun. It's an interesting game that hardcore gamers would enjoy, but also lends itself very well in a casual setting. I think your parents would enjoy it. In the future, I predict the re-release (wii-lease?) of Mario Tennis will have a similar effect, bridging the hardcore/casual market.

Is your father into golf and follow the PGA tour? If so then Tiger Woods 2008 is an excellent choice. it does the "simulation" style stuff that Madden does, but does so in a PGA setting. He can make his own golfer, buy different clubs. misc. etc. The controls (after you get the hang of it) are very fun. It's also very cheap too, as it is last year's game.

Should be called "Hasbro Stuff You Haven't Done With Your Parents Since The Last Time The Power Went Out That One Night", but that's a little wordy.

Also, IIRC, couldn't you pick up actual Yahtzee, Battleship, Boggle, and Sorry for less than the average video game costs?

Back on topic, Wii Sports is still the best game on the system, although they are making a Wii Sports 2. Wii Play is a blast.

Hasbro Family Game Night (The W at Amazon): $36.99

Yahtzee: $8.49
Boggle: $10.00
Sorry!: $22.96
Sorry! Sliders:: $19.96
Battleship: $16.65

Total: $78.06 (plus I bet it costs more to ship five board games than one video game)

The really interesting part is the inverse relationship between a game's quality and the cost. I love Yahtzee and Boggle. And you can buy the two for less than it costs to buy Sorry!, and Sorry! is the most boring board game of all time.

I wouldn't be surprised if a thermonuclear war started over a game of Sorry! gone pear-shaped, but that's just me...
