This came completely out of left field.

ESPN - Hall of Famer Baylor out as Clippers VP in favor of Dunleavy

LOS ANGELES -- Elgin Baylor is out as vice president of basketball operations with the Los Angeles Clippers, and coach Mike Dunleavy will assume his responsibilities as general manager.

While Dunleavy said Baylor had decided to resign after spending 22 years as an executive with the team, Baylor painted a little different picture when reached by The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.

"There is a dispute, and on the advice of my attorney they did not want me to discuss it," Baylor said, according to the newspaper. "That's all I can say."

A source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that Baylor resigned because the Clippers were willing to let him retain his salary and title but were stripping him of any authority. The source also said the Clippers were willing to have him return in a consultant's role. The Clippers are now not expected to fill his position.

The word "attorney" makes this pretty ominous and I have a feeling that we haven't heard the last of this story.

What's weirder is that Dunleavy is taking over, even though there was apparently a Sterling/Dunleavy dispute just a year ago.

This can't be a coincidence coming so soon after Millen's firing in Detroit.

Then again, if you recall during the Elton Brand situation, his agent David Falk said that all of the negotiating with the team happened between Brand/Falk and Dunleavy directly. I think when the agent was telling their side of the story in a radio interview, he even said something like "Mike [Dunleavy] does all the contract negotiations for them" (paraphrased). I'm surprised I didnt catch that sooner.

Some sites are reporting that Baylor retired, others saying that he was fired. When it was announced on the radio here in L.A. this afternoon, they quoted the O.C. Register newspaper as saying that he was "fired", and that the paper only found out when a reporter didnt see Elgin at training camp and started asking around about him, then later realized that Baylor wasnt mentioned in this year's media guide either. Doesnt sound like a retirement to me.

It also doesn't sound like Elgin had a lot of daily interaction with the team and those who covered it if it was only noticed now.
