People who think I'm driving slow in the left lane, when I'm actually going at the limit or just over it. For instance, tonight I was going 70 mph in a 65 zone and the guy behind me flashes me twice to speed up... even with an open lane to the right. Forgive me for obeying the law and trying to do what I can to avoid racial profiling on the highway. Not trying to bash or disrespect you, PeterStork, just trying to present the flipside to having to deal with those types of situations.

Oh, and all New Jersey drivers suck ass.

(edited by supersalvadoran on 17.7.08 0150)

If that happened to you in VA, you could get a ticket for impeding traffic. Yes, even though you were going faster than the limit. You must pull to the right, when safe to do so, so faster traffic can pass (if they flashed their lights at you).

An ex of mine got a ticket for not pulling to the right in such a situation. $150 ticket.

Must not be the case here. I was the passenger in a car one time in which a sheriff's vehicle (from a different county than the one that we were currently in) spent the whole time in the left lane at a below-traffic level speed.

Almost caused accidents several differents times as people would move to the right to pass, speed up, then realize it was a cop car and slow back down. So both lanes got slowed down.

I told the driver of the car I was in that he should just pass, as I don't think a county sheriff can pull you over in a county outside of their jurisdiction. He refused to do so, however.

And getting on elevators first is extremely stupid. There's way more room outside of the elevator than there is inside of the elevator, so it obviously makes more sense to let the smaller space empty out first.

I could probably list nigh on a hundred, most of which almost entirely irrational, but top of the list right now...

Two words. "Going forward". I have no idea at what point this phrase entered the lexicon of worldwide business speak but dear God people, it must be stopped. Seriously in nigh on every meeting you got to these days you will find two or more morons who attempt to sound intelligent by punctuating every other sentence with these words.

This is not even an anti-business speak issue I have. Other popular buzzwords - "leveraging", "decompartmentalising" - these things are a bit elaborate, but at least they convey some meaning. "Going forward" conributes absolutely nothing to any sentence I've ever heard spoken in years.

For example, compare and contrast:

a. "We need to start monitoring order volumes more closely".

b. "We need to start monitoring order volumes more closely going forward".

Option 'b' adds absolutely nothing that is not conveyed in option 'a'. The only conceivable sentence where I CAN imagine the words adding something would be:

" are rubbish defensively, but they're great going forward"

Sadly, the opportunity to debate the relative attacking merits of soccer teams rarely presents itself in any meetings I frequent, so instead I just hear two-bit wankers desperately trying to listen to the sound of their own voice for just a little longer in the hope of impressing whatever random High Heid Yin happens to be in the meeting.

I swear to God, it's like a disease for people. They don't even realise they're doing it. Yesterday one person said it SIX FN TIMES in a 15 minute meeting.

Shooting is too good for them.

Honorable mentions:

Chewing gum, as devoured by gadgies (urbandictionary.com)

Oversized golf umbrellas - as used in busy city centres by short-arses.

One of the 2 guys that I share an office with makes sounds while he eats. I don't mean that crunchy chips bother me, I'm talking about, in a quiet office, if you can't see him, he sounds like he's making love to his sandwich. I can also hear him swallow from his drink from across the room-- while I'm wearing my headphones. I won't ever get nuts enough about it to say anything, but it wouldn't be that hard to 1)Keep your mouth CLOSED when you eat, 2)Quit groaning and grunting over your &*#$! food, and 3)Don't pour so much in your mouth that you have to gulp. *shudder*

Ditto that. Anyone who slurps his/her coffee every single time he/she drinks it followed by a relaxing "ahhh" and continued lip smacking should be shot in the head.

I'm not going to defend these guys, because making loud noises when eating annoy me at times too. But I know that in many Asian countries, you are supposed to slurp and groan over your food. It's their way of saying that they're enjoying it and some could see it as a sign of disrespect if you're too quiet when eating thier offerings. Just putting it out there.

In that vein...loose/lose

And, people who don't clean up after themselves, especially in public places or after staying overnight in my house.

People who don't keep up with their kids (and/or maintain some semblance of discipline) in public places is another.

On a travel note...taxi drivers who can't drive. I don't understand how people who get paid to drive people around can be so freaking bad at driving.

Count me in with those driven insane by two cars driving at the same speed so no one can get through or the slow car in the left lane.

People who post "+1" or "-1" in comment sections of blogs, on message boards, and anywhere where they can't actually vote on comments/articles/etc.

Also, neighbor kids who set off fireworks at 11pm on a Sunday, when you have to be up at 2am.

This was going to be mine. God help you if you need to look up song lyrics.

Runner-up is abbreviating already short words. If it's four or five letters or less why bother?

The worst is the "three letters into one" uses like you-->u and are--->r because besides saving an arbitrary amount of time they lead to further stupidity like "ur" (which, be honest with yourselves, text messengers, would sound like uhr)

1. The use of "What Not". It is bad enough when used every day but I am hearing it more and more on radio and TV. Drives me insane.

2. "You Know" If I knew, you wouldn't need to tell me.

3. Interviews on TV and radio with prople from all walks of life who couldn't string together two sentences if their life depended on being coherent. It's not their fault, it's the media.

People who use an insulting nickname for the sports team or player. Bonus peeve points if it's disgusting, racist, homophobic or misogynistic. "A-Fraud" doesn't bother me (though I am not a Yankees fan), but it is lacking in originality. "Cowgirls", "Fudge Packers", "Viqueens", "Foreskins", and "Tony Homo" bother me for the reasons mentioned above. When I hear or read them, my brain immediately tells me I can ignore the rest of their sentence, because there's little chance of it being intelligent discourse. See also every discussion on FoxSports.com.

I know there are people on here who do this, so I want you to know: I hate the thing you do, and not you yourself :-)

TXTspeak - I don't care for it. Screw it. For heaven's sakes, use regular language and wording if sending text messages.

I hate people who "gloss" over letters when talking - for example, I'm from Toronto, not "tronno". It's Florida, not "Florda".

Wilful stupidity.

Not ragging on stupidity itself, of which we can all be guilty on occasion. Rather, someone who is wrong and persists in their wrongness out of sheer pride.
