I'm sure you are trying to make a point here, but after several minutes I can't figure out what it is. What's wrong with using niggardly? It has 100% completely different roots from the word nigger and has a 100% completely different meaning. I understand that there are other synonyms of the word he COULD have used but I can't see why anyone would suggest he SHOULD have used one of them as long as he used the word correctly.

But it SOUNDS like it, and that's enough to rile (some) people up. Surely you remember the DC guy who got in trouble despite also using it context...well, I could probably look it up...looks like it was 1999 (google.com) so maybe it was too long ago to remember.

I remember because it was all over the news here in the DC that he got in trouble for using a synonym for the word for miserly.

I thought it was all ridiculous and the mayor even offered the guy his job back after he resigned after huge public pressure and didn't accept it. I don't blame him. I hope his new employers knew how to use a dictionary.

I don't throw a hissy-fit when someone talks about a "chink" in someone's proverbial armor. It's all about the context and knowing the meaning of words. No, I didn't know that niggardly was a word until this incident but it doesn't take too much energy to find out what it means.

Considering word of the suspension and its reason has leaked, at least take advantage of it and have Hayes break out the old Stars and Bars with a new version of the Freebirds.

    Any examples? I'm curious.

But see, that's my point - there's certain situations where it's inexcusable. In my mind, with a word/phrase like "niggardly," I guess the argument COULD be made that it should be avoided just to err on the side of caution, but even then I can chalk something like that up to a poor choice of words. There's been other instances as well where I've known people attacked for using a word or phrase that could be construed as racist, but it was more due to ignorance of the word's meaning/impact or a poor choice of words than anything I'd think of as intentionally insulting.

But if a white guy uses a derogatory racist slur in an insulting manner in conversation with and/or in reference to a black guy, I just don't see quite as much room for interpretation.

It's like the difference between a guy just repeating the word "nigger" in reference to an event or instance of the word being used and using the word as a direct insult or label.

Hopefully that clears up what I meant - and my apologies if I'm misreading what you're saying.
