Happy New Year to all on the first box office weekend of 2008. From Box Office Mojo (Last week's rank in parenthesis):

1. National Treasure: Book of Secrets (1) - $20,225,000
2. I Am Legend (3) - $16,300,000
3. Juno (5) - $16,225,000
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks (2) - $16,000,000
5. One Missed Call (NEW) - $13,525,000
6. Charlie Wilson's War (4) - $8,184,000
7. P.S. I Love You (7) - $8,010,000
8. The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (8) - $6,300,000
9. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (9) - $5,400,000
10. Atonement (14) - $5,124,000

Didn't catch any movies this weekend, so I can't say my money went to any of these. I'll still put a recommendation on National Treasure. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Juno climb so high, considering it started out as such a limited release. Word of mouth (not to mention massive expansion and an effective ad campaign) made people curious, I guess. Either way, if you haven't seen it, it's a great movie and should be on your radar. I'm still curious about I Am Legend and will try and give it a view this week.

If you haven't seen "Walk Hard", you'd better see it now before it's completely wiped off the map. Coming in at #17, I imagine it'll be out of most theaters by Friday.

I saw Juno the night it expanded and I've never been so surprised by a crowd before. Not a single empty seat in the theater. I had to sit in the very front row on the very end. My neck was killing me by the end but it was a great movie, best movie I've seen this year.

I'm surprised how successful I Am Legend has been. Best opening ever in the month of December, including all three LOTR movies. Will Smith is the man.

After finally seeing it Friday night, I am so not surprised. That was such an amazing and powerful performance by Smith and he literally carried this movie on his shoulders.

Just like the trailers show, you really get a feel for how isolated his in that world where he is sure he is the only one alive. The fact that one of the main villains was his own sanity made it such a great story.

I remember seeing how great Smith was in Six Degrees and was stunned by his acting abilities. His performence in Legend blows Six Degrees away.

I cannot recommend this movie enough.
