Dave: Not so great. I mean, even more "not so great" than usual. Still, he got me back with...

Craig: OUTSTANDING. Worth staying up every time. He doesn't need guests!

Jay: Unbearable. If he's going to write his own stuff, it'll be interesting to see how long he can churn it out - and by "interesting," I mean "interesting to whoever tunes in," because I'm not gonna.

Conan: Morbidly curiously okay. I don't know how long HE can go, either, but as a trainwreck, probably has some tune-in value. Of course, it's a lot easier to skip the monologue in favor of...spinning your wedding ring on the desk to try to set a new record. Wow, but Bob Saget sure was awful tonight, though. I almost wonder if he was awful on purpose to show solidarity with the writers ... nah, he ain't that clever.

Kimmel: Don't watch him - he's on an extreme tape delay in my market as it is; if I didn't bother before, I'm surely uninterested in seeing what he can do without writers!

So, in summary: no real changes in late night viewing for me - Craig is it, baby. Craig would be awesome WITHOUT writers, but WITH writers, there's nothing better after the local news. I'll probably DVR Conan to see how he holds up, though.

While I have basic excuses for Dave (he was kind of bad last night, I thought), I would only say that he expected to come back on later than this and the jay/conan thing happening this week pushed him up. He was initially coming back on the 7th.

Craig is funny, but too late for an old bird like me. I have to be in bed by 12-12:30 at the latest, and I am EST. I watch nothing on tape delay yet.

Conan pleased me since he's the one guy you can just sit down and watch ad-lib crap and have it be somewhat entertaining, but I think it's a one (or two) shot deal. I can't see him going on with the type of time-filling stuff he did last night for weeks and months. The "how I kill my time" skit was nice, but there's only going to be so much he can cobble together.

I gave up on Jay after the first act. So damn bad.

Gotta love the playoff beards Dave & Conan were sporting. So, Dave has his writers back but not Conan? (I refuse to pay attention to Leno)

Yeah, the ring-spinning is gonna get old fast.

I thought Dave was alright. He seemed really focused on supporting the WGA, which might have detracted from the humor of the show. The Top Ten List was a bit surreal.

I have no interest in Leno, and Craig is on past my bedtime.

Before the strike, Kimmel was about all we watched in terms of late night. His show reminds me of Letterman's old NBC show.

I've not seen Conan's return outside of the monologue posted on Youtube, but could it be that he's purposefully tanking the quality while the strike continues?

I'm not sure he was purposely tanking, per se, but it seemed like the running joke was sort of like "See how lame we are without writers?" I admit, I laughed a lot at his singing Sabotage in the Edith voice.

Did anyone see ANY entertainment value in the JibJab video on Leno? It was just like "here's a completely random list of things that happened in 2007". And that one can't be blamed on the lack of writers.

Agreed that Letterman was mediocre. I haven't seen the Ferguson show yet, but we've downloaded it.

I think since Leno took over The Tonight Show, I've watched 10 MINUTES total of him. Just can't stand him any more. He was great when he first started out and was a guest on Letterman with his "What's My Beef" stuff, but a solid hour of him? I'll pass. I almost missed Letterman last night. I was brushing my teeth getting ready for bed when the announcers on the evening news reminded us "They're back!", so I watched him up until Robin Williams came out and hit the hay. He did ok, I guess. The WGA shilling got a little old, but I guess I understand that's gonna happen until the strike is over. HOPEFULLY, they'll tame it down a bit until said strike is over, otherwise, it'll get WAY old fast.

I think I got my fill of Leno during the original OJ trial. My parents used to watch him, out of inertia from watching Carson, and his stuff always seemed more mean-spirited than funny, which left a bad taste in my mouth.

I just watched Leno and Conan, the only two that have full episodes available online. Conan seemed good, and Leno seemed no worse than normal to me. I don't watch late night TV though, so I'm not a good judge.

Leno broke WGA rules (he is a member) when he admitted he wrote his own joke. Apparently, he forgot he was supposed to be on strike...

The Writers Guild has insisted that its members are barred from preparing scripted material for "struck productions," including their own shows in this case.

In his opening monologue, Leno said he was "on the side of the writers" but admitted writing his own jokes for the show. The guild immediately seized on the issue.

"A discussion took place today between Jay Leno and the Writers Guild to clarify to him that writing for 'The Tonight Show' constitutes a violation of the guild's strike rules," the union said in a terse statement.

Guild spokesman Neal Sacharow said WGA West President Patric Verrone talked with Leno over the phone.

"It was a very amicable conversation," Sacharow said. He denied that the talk amounted to a reprimand. "Jay's been a great supporter of the strike and very vocal in his support, so I think the discussion today was just about clarification."

Sacharow said it was unclear whether Leno would abide by the WGA's wishes. "I think there was an understanding," he told Reuters.

Well, let me weigh in on this for a second. First, know this: I am a capitalist and minimalist and do not (and would never again) belong to a union. I think they are wrong and anti-capitalistic.

That being said, Leno belongs to a Union that has made a pact to collectively bargain as a group with their employers for similar wages and benefits. When you decided to join a Union, you do it for a couple reasons. I was in the FOP, because you had to be in that Union to be a police officer in the city I worked in. I was in the electricians union as a licensee, but I waived my right to collectively bargain for wages and paid dues under a written letter of protest. There were word rules that forbade me from working without the membership. But there is a second reason: you feel that, by collectively bargaining with your employers, that you and the other members of your group will get a better deal on total compensation.

Leno's in the Union, you see. As a Union member, especially one not working under a protest letter or anything, and who claims to support their stance, he should not be breaking their collective bargaining agreement and the strike order and should honor their strike. Letterman's employer (and Fergeson's, who is, effectively, Letterman, collectively bargained with the Union and reached an agreement, so they are released from that requirement.

You see, this would be like: the automakers go out on strike, but a few of the workers decided to not strike and come on in to work. In fact, enough to tun an assembly line or two and make cars. Do you think that activity would hurt the ability of their Union to effectively collectively bargain? I do.

Now, if you're against Unions and it sounds like you are, this is a happy occurrence for you. If you believe Unions are needed and should be supported, then there should be no viewing of Leno, Conan, Kimmel and for that matter, Ellen (who is also being quietly picketed).

Yes I am against unions. I had to join one once for an IT job of all things, and hated the whole idea of it. The problems for Leno I would think is would writers be willing to work for him if he had joined under protest? Would the union be giving him a hard time on a constant basis about it? I mean look at how quick people were to jump all over him when he didn't come out right away and say he would pay his workers when this thing started. And if he had kept going on with the show all this time, writing his own jokes because he had joined under protest, you KNOW they'd be bashing him like crazy every day. He's kinda forced to go along whether he likes it or not.

Unions are a way for employees to negotiate the market value for their work. Workers provide a service the same way corporations provide a product. I'm not sure how that's could be considered anti-capitalist.

Yes, I know unions were formed out of socialist and anarchist movements, but that was over 100 years ago. That was also when workers were forced to work 16 hour days in unsafe, sometimes deadly, conditions - and some of those workers happened to be children. These days most unions are equally happy to disavow that history.

Typically, unions aren't formed until an employer has so egregiously violated the legal rights of their workers that they have no choice but to either quit or unionize. And since most people can't afford to be unemployed, they form a collective bargaining unit. Certainly, people can individually sue their employer, but that usually gets pretty expensive very fast, and unions should have the resources for extended litigation and attorneys who specialize in labor law.

Unfortunately, most unions have become no better than the corporations with whom they should be negotiating - and hence, little value to the workers they represent.

While it seems the Leno thing was just a misunderstanding:

1) Violating the very rules he's vocally supported was the issue.

2) He didn't have to come back.

Then he could have the Integrity of Kimmel who said the pickets are silly and stupid or Ellen who never went off the air and said she had a responsibility to her employer. Instead of playing the "I love the Union" card.

I have. Like, I am working (so called) then, just like I am (so called) now. Ellen's amusing. I thought her sitcom was a hoot until it became all about her being a lesbian. It's up against Oprah in our market and some judge program. If there was nothing else on and I needed background noise at 4PM in our market, yep, I'd turn on Ellen and if it was interesting or funny, I'd pay attention.

Somebody must be watching, she got renewed.
