Numbers from our friends at Box Office Mojo (Last week's rank in parenthesis):

1. National Treasure: Book of Secrets (NEW) - $45,500,000
2. I Am Legend (1) - $34,225,000
3. Alvin and the Chipmunks (2) - $29,000,000
4. Charlie Wilson's War (NEW) - $9,618,000
5. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (NEW) - $9,350,000
6. P.S. I Love You (NEW) - $6,505,000
7. Enchanted (4) - $4,152,000
8. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (NEW) - $4,100,000
9. The Golden Compass (3) - $3,980,000
10. Juno (11) - $3,400,000

I have no faith in mainstream moviegoers sometimes. Alvin and the Chipmunks drawing more money than Walk Hard, Sweeney Todd, and Charlie Wilson's War COMBINED is absolutely criminal.

Juno should be opening in more theaters after Christmas and is worth your money. It's a touching story, Michael Cera still brings the goods, and Ellen Page has grown into a genuinely likable actress.

No comment on National Treasure. The first one was good, but I reserve comment on the second one until I see it for myself.

National Treasure's opening to me is far more appalling than Alvin. After all, kids like to see movies, and there's not a lot out there for them. I never blame parents for taking kids to bad movies.

Adults on the other hand should know better than to go see Nic Cage in the Duh Vinci Code II.

Alvin and the Chipmunks' opening take doesn't surprise me. Kid fare usually means good receipts at the box office. I didn't realize there was any kind of buzz for walk hard. I thought it was just another cookie cutter spoof movie.

Wow. Walk Hard even opened under Enchanted?

I've heard mixed reactions about the movie, and i've been kinda "ehh" about it myself. Yet, I still want to see it for the awesome cast. I think Sweeney Todd probably took a chunk of its audience, plus the opening of more family friendly films attracted more families on the holiday weekend.

I can't believe out of all the movies out this weekend, I ended up at Alvin & The Chipmunks (with my nephews and niece). They enjoyed it. Me? Not so much.

Damn you, David Cross! I once believed you could do me no wrong.

sweeney todd only opened on like 1200 screens, so their take isn't as bad as it could be.

When was the last time David Cross has been in anything good?

Eternal Sunshine! Colbert Report! Clark and Michael! I'm Not There!

I do dislike his standup, and Freak Show was an egregious waste of talent.

I hate snobbery like this and I find it very annoying. What does it mean to you when good movies you like do great at the box office with American moviegoers such as Borat?

Sweeney Todd didn't make a ton of money despite having a limited amount of screens on a crowded opening weekend . . . so what?! This season is one of the biggest movie-going seasons of the year, and its a time when a ton of families are spending time at the movies. And families aren't going to tune into a movie like SWEENEY TODD in droves.

Do American moviegoers suck when something like The Bourne franchise becomes one of the greatest modern and most lucrative movie franchises of the decade, The Bourne Ultimatum comes out and does great business, and the horribly bloated sequel Rush Hour 3 comes out a week later and supremely disappoints?

C'mon, it was EIGHT theatres and it made *$1322* for the three-day weekend. (Sez: Box Office Mojo (boxofficemojo.com))

Interestingly, IMDb lists it as a "straight to DVD" release so sadly, Kim will have to wait - but not too long (The W at Amazon) - to see Luke Wilson in another crappy movie. ;-)

Yeah I think the math worked out that each theater averaged 6 people a day seeing the movie. Ouch.

I was kinda surprised, I know that the movie opened in Simpson's and Wilson's home state to try to boost the box office and convince distributors that they COULD put it in theaters and not just straight to dvd, but like some reviewers pointed out, 6 people a day means they couldn't even get the families of the people involved to go see it...

Say what you want about Simpson's box office appeal (it's probably all true) but I thought for sure Wilson's would be enough to bring in some fans.

I am sure that the box office take had a lot to do with Jessica's current "popularity" in the Lone Star State due to her relationship with a certain quarterback....

and I figured they were releasing it for early for the obvious Oscar consideration
