In wake of a two-month delay, Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes up with a bunch of major announcements in the month of October to make up for it.

CONFIRMED CHARACTERS
-Lucas (Confirmed Oct. 1). This is Lucas of Mother 3, the game better known as Earthbound 64, which never hit American soil and ultimately ended up as a Japan-only GBA release. He comes equipped with PSI powers of his own and could wind up being a replacement for Ness.
-Sonic the Hedgehog (Confirmed Oct. 10). No other character, aside from Solid Snake, has created the kind of buzz that Sonic has. To say this announcement shook the gaming world to its core would be an understatement. If you asked me 15 (or even 10 or 5) years ago if we'd ever see Sonic and Mario standing side-by-side, I'd have called you crazy.
-King Dedede (Confirmed Oct. 25). Kirby's archenemy completes the Kirby trifecta and brings his giant mallet with him. I realize that every character needs a voice sample, but I hope they stay far, FAR away from his cartoon voice actor (I watched the Kirby cartoon with my nephew and Dedede sounds way too much like Foghorn Leghorn).

NEW ITEMS
-Assist Trophy: Excitebike Racers, from the NES' Excitebike (Confirmed Oct. 3). A gaggle of 8-bit Excitebike Racers will come out and run down anyone in their way, essentially taking the role previously held by the Beedrills/Unown from the previous two games.
-Assist Trophy: Lakitu, from Super Mario Bros. (Confirmed Oct. 3). Lakitu also appears rendered in all his 8-bit glory. He'll toss down 8-bit Spinys to make the playing field more treacherous.
-Pokémon: Meowth (Confirmed Oct. 17). Meowth makes his triumphant return from the N64 Smash Bros. and once again utilizes his Pay Day attack.
-Assist Trophy: Little Mac (!), from Punch-Out!! for the NES (Confirmed Oct. 18). A pleasant surprise, Little Mac will come out and dash forward, unleashing two jabs and his patented uppercut.

NEW STAGES
-Shadow Moses Island, from the Metal Gear Solid series (Confirmed Oct. 2). One of the coolest stages to date, Snake's stage contains destructible walls that can come apart on contact. Search lights will appear and if they shine on a character, the trademark MGS sting will sound as a "!" appears over the character's head. If that's not enough, Metal Gears will lurk around and wreak havoc. STILL not enough? In a nice bit of fan service, Snake will communicate with his MGS teammates throughout the match. All of this adds up to major coolness!
-New Pork City, from Mother 3 (Confirmed Oct. 15). This stage is roughly the size of Hyrule Castle from Melee. To make things more interesting, the Ultimate Chimera (also from Mother 3) will occasionally pop in. If any character merely TOUCHES the Ultimate Chimera, it's a one-hit kill, just as it is in Mother 3.
-PictoChat, from your Nintendo DS (Confirmed Oct. 22). You thought the WarioWare stage was bizarre? This stage is based off a little-used DS application! While characters go at it, random interactive doodles will appear on-screen. They may appear harmless, but certain drawings like a face blowing in the wind or a pair of flames will harm you!
-The Summit, from Ice Climbers (Confirmed Oct. 31). This is the top of the Ice Climbers' mountain. In the middle of a match, the peak will detach from the mountain and slide down all the way into the arctic waters. While the glacier floats in the water, a shorts-wearing Polar Bear will attempt to weigh the glacier down and a rabid fish (from Balloon Fight, natch) will attempt to eat you!

FINAL SMASH!
-In one of the coolest Final Smashes to date, Fox will deploy the LANDMASTER TANK~! and ride it around the level. The tank's controls from the various Star Fox games WILL apply, meaning you can blast the cannon, perform barrel rolls, and hover! The epitome of awesomeness!
-In one of the STRANGEST Final Smashes to date, Kirby will don a chef's hat and bring out a cauldron. He'll dump all items and opponents inside and boil them!
-Peach's Final Smash involves waving her arms and inducing sleep to all opponents on the field. Many peaches will drop on the playing field to restore health. This attack may or may not be a dud, depending on how long the sleep effect lasts.

SINGLE-PLAYER
-Nothing new on the Subspace Emissary Adventure mode itself. However, CO-OP PLAY has been confirmed, so you can complete the campaign with a friend!
-The Classic mode has been confirmed and will play just like its predecessors.

GAME MODES
-Players can now pause the game and take snapshot photos! Photos can be edited and saved to your Wii. They can also be shared via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection!
-The Home-Run Contest returns, but with several new twists! Accidentally knocking the sandbag off the platform is now a thing of the past, as a light shield now borders the edge of the platform. The HRC can be done as a single-player experience, a two-player competitive game, and a two-player co-op game! A two-player competitive match can also be played online!
-Break the Targets! This mini-game also makes its triumphant return, with all-new outdoor environments.
-REPLAYS! Players can save up to three-minutes of replay data! Save your best target smashing time or save a piece of your most recent brawl!
-A Stage Builder (!!) has been implemented! Create your own stage using nearly any in-game component! You put the pieces together! You add the obstacles! You add the music! It's all there for you to play with! In addition to this, your hard work can be saved over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and you can also download someone else's custom stage while you're at it!

This month of announcements did more than enough to justify the delay to February. The addition of the Stage Builder, in particular, more than justifies the push back. I'm a QA Tester myself and I know that something with as many variables as this feature (especially with the online component thrown in) will take weeks, if not MONTHS, to perfect from a developer standpoint and even longer for any QA team to check.

I'm astounded that this much can fit into a single Wii game. I'm looking VERY much forward to it and we're still more than three months away, meaning there could be even more Earth-shaking announcements coming. Stay tuned!

Honestly, the addition of Dedede made me smile more than anything. I love that guy.

With all Nintendo's putting into this game, how are they ever going to top it?

This gradual release of information is brilliant. I'm not particularly excited about the game and don't even own a Wii. But every time I read about some new character being revealed I get a little bit giddy because it sounds so cool. If it were just a giant list of new stuff all at once, the effect wouldn't nearly be the same.

Maybe I'll even get a Wii next year sometime.

-I'm weird that way, but I ended up being more excited about Dedede than Sonic.
-I am giddy about the Lakitu assist.
-I wish Little Mac would attack from the foreground, rather than from the side; totally not the same.
-I hope Peach's Final Smash doesn't mean that there won't be any Jigglypuff. I've never played any Pokemon, but I *love* Jigglypuff. I get slaughtered as her/him/it, but it's always a blast until I die.
