Well, Rock Band hits next month, but it's the Guitar Hero franchise that fires first. Before we go into what I think of the game, here's the song list one more time:

3's and 7's Queens of the Stone Age
Anarchy in the U.K. The Sex Pistols
Barracuda Heart
Before I Forget Slipknot
Black Magic Woman Santana
Black Sunshine White Zombie
Bulls on Parade Rage Against the Machine
Cherub Rock The Smashing Pumpkins
Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll Blue Oyster Cult
Cliffs of Dover Eric Johnson
Cult of Personality Living Colour
Even Flow Pearl Jam
Helicopter Bloc Party
Hit Me With Your Best Shot Pat Benatar
Holiday in Cambodia The Dead Kennedys
Knights of Cydonia Muse
Kool Thing Sonic Youth
La Grange ZZ Top
Lay Down Priestess
The Metal Tenacious D
Miss Murder AFI
Mississippi Queen Mountain
Monsters Matchbook Romance
My Name is Jonas Weezer
The Number of the Beast Iron Maiden
One Metallica
Paint It, Black The Rolling Stones
Paranoid Black Sabbath
Pride and Joy Stevie Ray Vaughn
Raining Blood Slayer
Reptilia The Strokes
Rock and Roll All Nite Kiss
Rock You Like a Hurricane The Scorpions
Sabotage The Beastie Boys
Same Old Song and Dance Aerosmith
School's Out Alice Cooper
The Seeker The Who
Slow Ride Foghat
Story of My Life Social Distortion
Stricken Disturbed
Suck My Kiss The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Talk Dirty To Me Poison
Welcome to the Jungle Guns 'N Roses
When You Were Young The Killers

BONUS SONGS (PURCHASE FROM IN-GAME STORE)
Avalancha Heroes del Silencio
Generation Rock Revolverhead
Go That Far Bret Michaels Band
Hier Kommt Alex Die Toten Hosen
I'm in the Band The Hellacopters
In the Belly of a Shark Gallows
Marvais Garcon Naast
Minus Celsius Backyard Babies
Prayer of the Refugee Rise Against
Radio Song Superbus
Ruby The Kaiser Chiefs
She Bangs the Drums The Stone Roses
Take This Life In Flames
Through Fire and Flames DragonForce

As for the game, it's definitely got the same feel. And considering it's Neversoft's first official crack at the franchise, they deserve a lot of credit for managing to re-create the experience. The song list, in my opinion, is superior to the previous game. And hell, if you're calling it "Legends of Rock", then you'd better have Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, Guns 'N Roses, Aerosmith, et. al. in this game.

The boss battles are a nice diversion from what's otherwise the exact same Career mode format. There are now little cutscenes after each Encore song, which are silly, but ultimately harmless. Online multiplayer (for Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 owners) is a great addition, though the Battle mode needs a few tweaks. It's a great concept and all, but it's almost impossible to put away an opponent who's playing on Easy difficulty.

In terms of difficulty, it definitely feels more even across the board. Easy is easy and medium is actually medium, unlike the second game which handed you your ass in certain songs on medium difficulty. And of course, Hard and Expert certainly live up to their billing. Ultimately, though, no matter what difficulty you go with, the songs are all fun to play, with the exception of a few duds (Social Distortion, I'm looking at YOU!). Also, minus points for making the in-store songs not really worth playing for. Nothing fun like Trogdor in II. But otherwise, it's great stuff and worth the price of admission.

Highly recommended, especially if you haven't played any of the games in the series yet.

Note: DragonForce's "Through Fire and Flames" WILL drive you insane, even at Easy! It'll have so-called Guitar Hero experts sucking their thumbs in a fetal position. I guarantee it!

360 Owners, there's an Achievement in it for you if you can complete this song on Expert. It's appropriately titled "The Inhuman Achievement".

Boner Worthy:
Heart - Barracuda
Pearl Jam - Even Flow

Hey, That's A Really Good Song:
QOTSA - 3's And 7's
Priestess - Lay Down
Weezer - My Name Is Jonas
Metallica - One
The Strokes - Reptilia
The Rolling Stone - Paint It Black
Black Sabbath - Paranoid

Everything else is either songs I have not heard of, or okay songs. I mean, it's Guitar Hero; either you care about songs that you love the shit out of, or you care about it in a Madden/Smackdown way (new songs/players/stats).

That said, Jeff needs Rock Band. Jeff needs Rock Band bad.

I think with the new presentation and the little vignettes between each level and the battles to unlock the characters that it's likely if you bought GH3 and liked it so you decided to go buy GH2, you woukd be kind of disappointed in GH2.

Otherwise, I'd say I almost completely agree with It's False.

My only problem so far is that there are some songs that are only available to play in co-op mode. This is a departure from past installments. I was really looking forward to playing Sabotage and Suck My Kiss.

Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll - Blue Oyster Cult
Helicopter - Bloc Party
Monsters - Matchbook Romance
Reptilia - The Strokes
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Suck My Kiss - Red Hot Chili Peppers

I didn't think the Dragonforce song was that bad on the Easy level. I just wish it hadn't been over the end credits; I would have liked to have read those.

I dropped the dough for the Wii version yesterday after being BOMBARDED by ads for the game in my Sunday flyers. I just couldn't resist, I guess.

I am by no means a hardcore GH player. I've only tried a handful of tracks on the previous versions. And I haven't set foot out of Easy mode yet.

That said, I freakin' LOVE IT. The Wii version of the controller has some good weight to it, so you feel like you've got a real guitar over your shoulder. Everything plays nice and smooth. And even though I'm just baby-stepping though Easy, there's still enough of a challenge to keep me occupied. (I always want to jump to medium, but every time I do, I manage to pick a song that kicks my ass. Plus, I just want to get through Easy so I can unlock all the songs.) The boss levels are cool too. I like trying to mess up Tom Morello. It's oddly satisfying.

Yeah, some songs being co-op only is a drag, especially since you can't buy a stand-alone second controller for the Wii right now, but I'm betting there are some codes to unlock them out there somewhere.

I swear, it amazes me how ignorant I am of pop music that I always discover another good song or two just by playing Guitar Hero. This time around? The Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia", and I'm hardly a punk/alternative fan. Though I swear, I tried Expert between stabs at Career Mode, and I lasted maybe seven seconds before failing miserably. How are people scoring 400,000+ points on Expert on that song and not irreparably breaking their fingers and wrists???

Slash's guitar battles seems to be the toughest of the three battles in there. And it's like he's immune to anything you do. Of course, you can't practice the licks for the guitar battles in training mode. Sigh....

Finally noodled around online tonight, too. Anyone Wii owners who might be interested in playing me, look for the account of VinnieVanHalen. Just check out my Wii # here to track me down or to send me a message.

Slash's guitar battles seems to be the toughest of the three battles in there.

I've beaten Slash so far on easy & medium the 1st time I've faced him. Tom Morello, however, took me a few tries. (Tried Lou a few times on easy, but haven't beaten him yet.)

The best way to win the battles, it seems, is to save up 3 attacks for the very end when the boss is trying to put you away.

Slayer's "Raining Blood" on easy is giving me fits. Best I can muster so far is 78%. I'm a GH noob, but I was able to plow through the easy career beating every song the 1st time. I've decided to give up for now in favor of going through the medium career path.

This time around? The Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia", and I'm hardly a punk/alternative fan.

Speaking of this song, I got a big kick out of all the prisoners jumping up & down in unison pumping their fists during this song.

Medium seems harder this time, and Hard seems easier. Either that, or I got a lot better playing Medium and I can now handle Hard.

Welcome to the Jungle is everything I'd hoped it would be, and more.

I've only played the demo and based on that, I'm holding off on this one. In GH2, I'm in the middle of the Hard set list, but I hadn't played for a while so I did medium in the demo. I got 99% on each song, which seems too easy to me.

Another complaint is that in GH2 it felt like each level of difficulty build on the previous one. Like, if I played Heart Shaped Box on medium, the hard one was similar to medium, but obviously with some more stuff added. The demo for GH3 didn't feel like that to me. I played Even Flow in medium and it was a cake walk, so I tried it on hard and it felt like not only way harder but also like I wasn't even playing the same song.

Is this how the actual game is or did I get the wrong impression from the demo?

I bought GH2 first, then GH, then the 80s. One both GH and the 80s I was able to run through the Easy and Medium levels pretty much in one run, getting five stars on every song. I just finished the Medium level on GH3 and only failed to get five stars the first time out on "Pride and Joy" because I'd played for like five hours and was losing focus, and "Raining Blood" because it is damn hard. It took me three tries to get five stars on "Raining Blood", and I needed two tries to beat Lou on Medium.

Having said all that, I think it is very comparable to the earlier games. The difficulty level goes up as you get deeper into career mode (I thank God that I've always liked "Cliffs of Dover") and the only reason I did so well on the last few songs is because I know most of them so well.

Once we are done with trick-or-treaters tonight I'm trying out the Hard level. I did think it was a BIG step up from Easy to Medium.

That will unlock all the songs in the store, but it doesn't seem to unlock the coop-only songs. Does anyone know if those songs are unlocked for single-player if you beat them in coop mode?

(points back up to Caliban's post to refer to it, rather than just quoting the whole damn thing)

As far as GH3, with the exception of maybe two songs and the final battle, I ended up getting five stars on each song the first time through Medium difficulty. (Bear in mind, I also have GH1, GH2, and finally bought GH Rocks the 80s a few weeks ago to "warm up" for GH3. Also, I'm a "former" musician with experience playing drums, percussion, piano/keyboards, and even a little bit of guitar. Did I also mention I occasionally play DDR, too?) Hard definitely jacks up the difficult from Medium. But if you go through songs at each level, you'll see a build-up on notes - maybe closer to how GH1 was than GH2 was, but it's there. I'd compare your Evenflow situation to something like Cowboys from Hell in GH1 from Medium to Hard... or maybe even Bark at the Moon.

But I prefer it the way it's presented in GH3. To me, GH2 seemed way too difficult, even with the practice modes and the improved hammer-on and pull-off techniques. It's great that they have so many master recordings and not lame covers like they had in GH2. And being able to compete on-line is fun, too. I've already had at least face-off matches that were literally scoring races that came down to the wire. (I do agree with the previous poster about the difficulty in finishing off opponents in Battle mode on Medium or Easy difficulty. A good chunk of the time, I end up going to sudden death on battles.)

Progress update - finally took out Slash in his guitar battle on Hard. I've almost cleared Tier 6 with "Cherub Rock", "The Metal", and whatever the third song is on that tier. Only have "Black Magic Woman" to go, and I took a break, because the hand/wrist/shoulder was starting to feel it from hours of play. (The Virgin Megastore at Downtown Disney in Orlando is supposed to be doing some sort of GH3 Tournament on Friday evening, so I'm "in training." )

Thanks for the answer. I never played GH1, just GH2 on the 360 so I wasn't aware of the differences between the two. I'll probably pick this up after the first of the year because I like the track list for Rock Band better.

I'm playing it on the Wii. I mean, it may have unlocked the coop songs in coop mode (it probably did), but unsurprisingly, I have no friends, so that doesn't help me much, and I'd really like to play Suck My Kiss.

I have the Wii version, but haven't tried the code yet. I'm waiting to beat Easy Career. But, my bro-in-law used the code on the PS2 version, which is essentially the same version as Wii, and he got the co-op songs in single player. (Helicopter kicked my ass on Easy, btw.) I don't know why it wouldn't work for Wii.

Also, Slash is a giant pushover on Easy. I beat him in 4 moves.

I have the Wii version - that code unlocked all songs (even coop) for me. Are you looking in career mode? Because it doesn't unlock them there, it unlocks them in the regular 1 player (non-career) mode.

Ohhhhhh. See, I looked in QuickPlay when I didn't find them in Career Mode, but for whatever reason (I'm blind? Maybe stupid?) I didn't see them. Thanks much!
