I had asked about this in this week's Wii thread and in the modicum of research I had done, I had heard good things about this game. Its not a bad game, but overall, I've been disappointed by it.

First, let me begin by saying that the game is set several episodes ahead of where Adult Swim is in airing the anime. For someone who has been patiently waiting to find out how Rukia's execution will play out, the game provided tons of spoilers pretty much right out of the box. If you're following the anime at Cartoon Network's snail's pace, you may want to hold off on playing this.

Most amazingly, the music is incredibly disappointing. Perhaps someone who's more familiar with the series can prove me wrong, but Bleach has a very distinct soundtrack, and instead of working from that template, the game is populated by generic video game psuedo-rock songs. Its really disappointing and lame. There's also a lack of video scenes. One would have thought they could have licensed some footage from the anime. Instead we get screenshots mixed with the occasional cgi scene. For the current generation of consoles, this is unacceptable.

The game play itself is okay. Flicking one's wrist in various directions has replaced button mashing as the method-du-jour. (I'm not much for fighting games). Having just watched the Renji v. Byukaku fight last night, and then playing it today, I was surprised at how well the game integrates the characters moves. Kenpachi is a favourite of mine. The sheer elation on his face when he removes his eyepatch is amusing. They did manage to get the voice talent from the official english version, so at least that's consistent. The villain is a bit underwhelming at first, but on multiple play throughs he does develop a bit more depth.

Overall, I'm disappointed with myself for rushing out and spending $50 on it. I'm enjoying it, but for what it provides, I should have invested more than a rental. I hope the DS game proves to be better.
