| #1 Posted on 3.10.07 1318.48 Reposted on: 3.10.14 1319.41 | So this week according to the Toys R Us ad, all board games from the major companies (Milton Bradley, Parker Bros) are 30% off. I do not have really anything other than strategy games, and was looking for good party games for when I entertain people who are not dorks like me and my friends. Promote this thread! | | JoshMann

For those of us that are sane, there is a FREE game that I have been introduced to called werewolf. Some people call it Mafia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28game%29
I didn't setup the game, but as I understand it, the right number of players is 8-10 plus one non-playing moderator.
The moderator has a deck of cards, marked on them are:
Werewolves: They try to eat the villagers at night to win the game Villagers: They try to burn other villagers whom they suspect is a werewolf during the day to eliminate them all.
There are some special villagers that we use: Cupid: Can join two people into a couple. They MUST keep each other alive and their goal as the couple is to be the last two standing. If one of the player in a couple dies, THE OTHER PLAYER DIES TOO.
Hunter: At any point in the game, even right after killed, they may kill any one player.
Sorceress: S/he is told after every night round who has been picked to be eaten. S/he can give the Mod a thumbs up or down if they want the victim to live or die. Also, they can poison a player once per game.
Little Girl: S/he can peek during any night round and try to spy who is a werewolf. S/he is the only non-werewolf player aloud to open their eyes during the night round.
Seer: The Seer can look at any player's card during their turn at night to see what they are.
Thief: The thief isn't an occupation as such. The Thief, if there is one, is the first to act in the game. At the beginning of the first night round, they get to look at the cards and they must select a new card. This is a very powerful card because if you know how the deck was setup, you know exactly what cards are in play, and how many werewolves are out there and they can pick a werewolf card if they choose.
Because the deck of cards greatly exceeds the number of players, all, any, or none of the specials might be in play. The game can not start unless there is at least one werewolf.
The game starts at night. All players close their eyes.
The Mod goes through the various turns for Cupid to select their couple, the seer to peek at a cards, the Werewolves to have their meet and greet and to select a target, and the sorceress is informed of the target.
Daylight arrives and the players open their eyes, and unless the werewolves didn't have a consensus, the mod informs the players who was eaten during the night.
All the players (werewolves too) try to figure out who is a werewolf they want to burn. After debating, the mod will take a vote and the player with the plurality of the votes will be killed and the mod will tell them if it was a werewolf or not and if there are more, the game continues.
This goes back and forth until the villagers burn all the werewolves, the werewolves eat all the villigers, or the mixed werewolf/villager couple have killed the other players and are the last two standing.
Our Moderators have been very great storytellers and every game has taken place somewhere different (The Titanic, Lost island, DS9, Gilligan's Island, at the Quick Stop) and with the right crowd can be a pretty funny night as everyone cheers that Gilligan was burned at the steak.

I played a Star Wars edition years ago, and it was brilliant; everyone involved took on a voice and mannerism of a character from the movie and we had a blast.
Using the Force (or attempting to) didn't work. :-P

On a(nother) side note, I went to a K-Mart the other day and couldn't find a simple checkers and/or chess set.

I have a similar Catan experience. I got roped into playing at a party by some friends (which really explains the kind of parties I go to). After about 20 minutes I decided to try to lose so I could get out of playing any more. The game went another hour. Finally, I realized that the only way I could try to end the game faster was to win it. I won the game in another 15 minutes of playing. I now refuse to play this game ever again. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
