Wow, I'm shocked this has gotten ZERO coverage by anyone here or at the Observer. Wondering if I missed much, I use the magic of TIVO~! to re-watch last night's SNME.

-The show opens with Vince McMahon and Coach. When Vince talks about doing the nasty with a black truck driver from the 70's, Coachman points out that he's adopted. Vince points out that it'll be a long night. I'll leave the "shoot comments" line to more capable hands.
-Batista & Kane (w/ DDP's rib tape) d. Khali & Finlay. Khali gets the patented Andre The Giant "Oh no, my arms are stuck in the ropes!" spot. Batista gets the win for his team with a Batista Bomb on Finlay. Not as bad as it could have been. If only Khali could be kept to a tag team setting, he wouldn't be so bad.
-Vince McMahon uses the Warrior's magic mirror, obviously left over from the old WCW Big Box of Failed Props, to see his 80's self. Ron Simmons looks at himself in the mirror and says "Damn". You know, if the timing's as perfect as it was this time, Simmons' spiel will never get old. Seriously.
-Vince and Coach now go to the ring. Coach has supposedly narrowed down the bastard's identity. First, he brings out Eugene. In a rare display of continuity, Coach points out that Eugene's uncle is, in fact, Eric Bischoff. He also notes that Vince did the horizontal mambo with his mom, which prompted Bischoff to get into the wrestling business to DESTROY VINCE and get his revenge. That's actually pretty heavy stuff. But Vince simply dismisses the possibility and sends Eugene on his way. Next candidate: Melina. Vince also dismisses this possibility, since he apparently just had a July 4th "celebration" with Melina. Obviously disgusted, Melina points out that if the bastard DOES turn out to be here, she'll take Vince for every penny he's got. Coach has one last candidate: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Many "What" lines commence, followed by the usual Stone Cold Stunners. The mystery continues.
-John Cena d. Carlito. Cena wins with the STFU. Orton attacks after the match and gives Cena an RKO on a folded chair! For as much as everyone hates Orton, they've actually done a decent job selling him as a legit challenger.
-Evander Holyfield and Matt Hardy have their boxing match next. Holyfield absolutely hands Hardy his ass to the point that he doesn't want to fight Matt anymore after the first round. MVP takes umbrage and gets knocked out for his troubles.
-Boogeyman & CM Punk d. John Morrison & Big Daddy V. Punk wins with a small package. Bad match.

Well, there are certainly worse ways to spend a Sunday than watching a Tivo'd SNME. This wasn't a great show by any means, but it was decent enough. The Summerslam matches are getting built up just fine, but the focus on the McMahon silliness is a killer.

My TiVo only got with the program literally right as Stone Cold was entering the building, so I missed the first half of the show.

Watching Austin torture Vince will never get old.

Carlito should not have been so thoroughly squashed by Cena, not if they're planning on allowing him to remain in the main event after SummerSlam and the Cena/Orton match.

I don't know how "real" the boxing match was, but they did it exactly the right way: Of course Matt Hardy's gonna get his ass handed to him. But Holyfield really is a stand-up guy, a strong Christian, so his reaction to how badly Hardy was hurt-- though obviously that part of it was booked-- actually made sense, which is a rare thing in WWE these days. Knocking MVP on his ass made me laugh out loud, even though I love the MVP character because he's so obnoxious.

I fast-forwarded through the "ECW" tag-team match, and then... that was the end of the show? Really? Nice way to show everyone your ass before moving on to NBC's other programming.

The entire 90 minutes could have been dedicated to Austin and McMahon and I would have been fine with it.

Pretty uneventful, but I guess the days of SNME being used to advance story lines I a major way are long gone. The RKO on the chair was sweet, though.

The crowd loved Orton, and I can't help but wish that he wins at SS, just to freshen things up. Maybe Carlito causes Cena to lose and Orton goes on to feud with, well duh, HHH.

I know it's useless to ask, but can anyone explain to me what the POINT of the magic mirror was?

Sooooo, Vince sees an image of himself as a younger man in the mirror ... WHY? What does that have to do with anything? Is it bringing back memories of his more "virile" days, is that the point?

I half-expected his face (the younger face in the mirror) to "morph" into one of the other wrestler's faces (like the Great Khali because that would be hi-LAR-ious) ... but nope. Nothing.

Hee! I missed this on the DVR. But Vince did buy WCW, he can use all the failed props he wants, right? On the subject of WCW's Failed Props, Michael Buffer announced the boxing match, hee! I forgot to mention how it cracked me up that MVP demanded an introduction for, you know, not competing. "And he is straight-up ballinnnnnnnnnnnn!" was funnier than hell coming from Buffer.

Simmons should have seen an image of himself in the powder blue Faarooq Asaad suit, or in a Doom mask, or something like that.

Given that Holyfield's gloves were about three times the size of Matt's head, not very.

SNME always ended on the weakest match of the night because they always assume that people tune out before that point anyway. The last skit on Saturday Night Live is never the best one either.

Actually, that was pretty faithful to how SNME was back in the day - a lot of fun "main event caliber" matches, but nothing that advanced storylines in any major way. (Big stuff happened on The Main Event, but that's a different show.)

In fact, aside from Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard winning the tag titles and "the meeting of the Madness and the Mania", I can't remember anything major ever happening on classic Saturday Night's Main Events. Unless you count Uncle Elmer's wedding. Which you shouldn't.

The appeal of the old SNMEs wasn't in how eventful they were or how they moved along major storylines. It was just seeing actual star vs. star matchups for free, rather than the star vs. jobber matches you got on Superstars or Wrestling Challenge.

Exactly. In the early days, SNME was THE way to advance major storylines. Otherwise, it was a Brother Love segment, or something like that on Superstars or Challenge every now and then.

But as far as seeing the top guys wrestle on TV (especially Hogan) SNME was it, with rare exceptions. There may not have been a lot of title changes, but there was almost always major advances. To quote Gorilla, "It was a happening".

Didn't the Megapowers start Exploding on SNME? The match with the Twin Towers were Liz was stretchered out? Or was that The Main Event?

And I want to say the blowoff to Savage vs. Jake, culminating in Undertaker turning face, was on SNME. Pretty important stuff when I was 12.

I took it to mean that by revealing young, ANNOUNCER Vince ... it was supposed to be another hint that the love child is going to be Kennedy.

Bingo. The angle where Liz dragged Hogan out of the locker room to save Savage, forming the Megapowers also happened on a SNME.

As far as the show went, I saw the Austin appearance coming, yet still got a smile when he came out as a potential McMahon. But everything after the entrance seemed pretty clichèd to me. Not to mention the entire concept of the segment being that Coach was going to reveal the bastidge, except for no apparent reason he would only do it in public, and he was so sure in his research that he had three 'answers' lined up.

I would have marked like crazy if the nWo theme started up while Buffer was saying "Rumbllllllllllllllllllle...". (And from then after the segment would have sucked)
