First, let's all remember this photo:

See if you can figure out what's ...DIFFERENT about this next photo, taken about 12 hours ago:

(image removed)

Yep.

Dateline: this morning, appx. 0330

Kim: "Chris, his tree fell down in our yard."

Me: "Zzzzzzzzzzz oh wow this is some thunderstorm I was sleeping through."

(image removed)

Apparently there were "microtornados" in St. Paul - all I know is they said we had gusts in the 70-75 mph range and I'm guessing that's what split this mulberry in twain. (You can't see it but this thing had A LOT of sap running out of it.)

(image removed)

How's the story go? This only happens about two weeks after you move in, and four days after you finally get your Internet turned on?

(image removed)

Small mercies: this is about all the contact the tree had with the house after falling. (It did rip some screen windows on the porch.) Naturally, we won't incur enough damage to cover our deductible although they MIGHT kick towards the tree removal if we hit a certain barrier. (Kim has said we should alternatively consider the cost of a chain saw and a fire pit. Does mulberry season well?)

Adding to the excitement was nine hours without power for over 110,000 in the Twin Cities and St. Cloud metro areas. We were there.

In summary: The DVD post has been delayed. Sorry, cats! HEY another thunderstorm firing up. LATER

Mulberry is similar to oak and ash in that it's gotta dry out for a long time. It's a hell out a lot easier to split than either of those two though. Excellent for free firewood if you're going that route.

If you have not reported the claim yet, do not. Just cut it up.

Having a reported claim on your property makes things more difficult in the future. Stupid insurance companies are punitive about this crap.

If you didn't call them, don't. Don't even inquire to them. They'll call it a claim even if they don't pay you.

I hate insurance companies.

'Twas bad here in Eagan, too. Lucky you slept through it--it woke me up and I couldn't get back to sleep. SCARY sounding winds blowing, and I say that having been through (and slept through most of) Hurricane Isabel. Trees down all over here too--a big pine near my apartment was uprooted.

What a mess...

If someone else's tree falls into your yard, aren't they still responsible for it, not you?

Act of Nature, or something. So long as the tree isn't dead (which would be negligence) it's my problem 'cause it's my yard.

Sorry, I told them immediately because I like having reference points. I think they do, too, should I actually file a claim.

Don't we have the same insurance company? (If not, you should come back to ours!)

Actually, I noticed a lack of realtor sign, too.

I'm glad your family is safe, CRZ.

Daylight?

So I guess that when a tree falls and no one hears it, it really did happen.

You should really get on the neighbors ass about this. Don't take responsibility for it. Being new in the neighborhood, he and the others around you will think you're a pushover and pretty soon you'll be babysitting brats having people dump garbage in your yard.

You gotta man up and make the asshole take care of his tree.

The person in question is his former landlord. CRZ is not new in the neighborhood.

Plus, there's no need to be an asshole to your next door neighbor. Everybody should play nice and be cooperative. What a nicer world that would be, huh?
