While I was scanning WWE.com, I started reading this article (wwe.com) written by Elijah Burke. In it he makes a reference to "a hardcore punk named Charles Montgomery".

They haven't really expanded much on the CM Punk character besides repeating that he's straight edge and really wants the title. I haven't heard that name on television before but I could be missing it. Charles Montgomery makes me wonder if they are trying to give him the background of a rich family.

It would be nice if they expanded their show more than an hour to develop the characters more.

Or maybe they just pulled it out of thin air for Elijah's "column" and you'll never hear it again.

What's more disconcerting is that here AND on ECW TV Burke keeps referencing himself as the Paragon of Virtue, which I would normally expect to hear from ... Chris Jericho?

He (CM Punk) is a nerd (cf. his Cobra tattoo), and took "Charles Montgomery" from Mr. Burns on The Simpsons when first trying to come up with a wrestling name.

Punk has given about fifty different explanations for what the CM stands for. At this point, I wouldn't recommend believing one reason over any of the others.

Wasn't that the WCW-Raven storyline?

I was under the impression it meant "Chick Magnet" from being in a tag team of the same name. He was Chick Magnet Punk (in the same vein that Smash was Demolition Smash). I can't remember where I read that. It could have been at ObsessedWithWrestling.com

That seems to be the actual story, is that it was a gimmick he got very early into his indy career and just kept the initials.

As others have pointed out, Punk's running joke for years was giving people who asked various explanations for what the "C.M." meant, with "C. Montgomery" (the Mr. Burns reference) being the most famous one.

The mention of it in Elijah's column is just an inside joke and means absolutely nothing.

Just like a few weeks ago, when Morrison speculated about what it means, he went through the list of names that you can find on most webpages (Cookie monster, chick magnet being the two that I remember)

And yes, I noticed Elijah calling himself the Paragon of Virtue and I was like "That would be such a cool feud"
Just like Morrison with his shaman of sexy thing..it sounds like something Jericho would say
