Lead announcer Marty Reid is just doing a hideous job today. This race is about a quarter over and so far:

He's had trouble telling Michael Andretti from John Andretti

He keeps implying that the first guy off pit row is leading the race - neglecting the fact that half a dozen cars on the lead lap didn't pit

He has referred to Milko Duna as "he"

And a couple dozen other things so annoying that I immediately had to register my outrage on the Internet

Watching this race used to be a high point of the year...now I'm actually looking forward to the Coca-Cola 600 instead!

Back to the race...

EDIT: Oh, wait. They just red flagged due to rain. The hits just keep on coming! :-P

Not just the factual problems, but the constant boosterism of the race is very annoying to me. It's nothing new for IRL events, but there seems to be a mission to continually point how exciting the race is, to maybe badger you into believing it. I mean, it's been an okay race - it'd be a better race if people who don't really have any business being in the race didn't crash after five laps - but apparently it's the most exciting thing ever to happen to this announcer.

The highlight of the race so far was Jewel asking Cena how it's going to feel to lose to a folk singer, but that's a commercial and I guess doesn't count. It's weird to find out John Salley is a bigger star to ABC in 2007 than Cena too.

My opinion of the race will be determines once I finally see the pictures of Ashley Judd in a wet sun dress.

I don't think it's going to be all that life-altering, unless they get some better close-ups than what I caught on TV. But speaking of Ashley, what the heck was up with that "And my man won from 13th(?) spot as a gentleman!" business?

I still enjoy the big race, but am not so big a fan as I could get mad with an ignorant announcer. One thing - they kept talking about how since there wasn't enough rubber on the track, people were pretty much toast if they got out of the groove in the turns. There seems to be just a few spots on the track where passing is even possible .. with all the millions they sink into this sport, why can't someone come up with a more-grippy racing surface? In addition to better racing because you don't get cautions every 15th lap or so, you'd open up the course to a lot more two-wide racing, would you not?

Or am I turning Indy Car racing into NASCAR that way??

Missed Jim Nabors, too.

I was wondering about the Ashley comment, too. But unfortunately the guy or gal (I don't remember which) that was asking the questions wasn't curious and didn't follow up. It almost seemed like a shot at another driver or drivers, since the implication would be that other drivers were not "gentlemen". But I would have no idea what she may have been talking about.

As only a casual fan, I may not be the best to comment on this, but for an Indy Car race, this was actually pretty good. Most Indy races that I have bothered to even tune into are simply just not very competitive. This race had a ton of lead changes and nobody ever managed to totally run away from the pack.

Y'know, I lived in Indianapolis for about twenty years and have never watched the Indy 500 all the way through, I've never been to the Indy 500, and have never thought of auto racing as being anything but mind-numbingly boring unless it's Gran Turismo on PlayStation or Mario Kart.
