Which shows that the biggest losing streak in Celtics franchise will not only be tolerated, but rewarded:

ESPN.com - NBA - Celtics extend Rivers' deal despite dreadful season

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics gave Doc Rivers a contract extension on Thursday, giving him a chance at possibly coaching the likes of Greg Oden or Kevin Durant next season and perhaps beyond.

Rivers, whose contract was to run through 2007-08, will have a little more job security as he tries to improve on a season in which the NBA's most decorated franchise lost a team-record 18 consecutive games and finished with the second-worst record in the league.

Seriously, do they just think they can't find better out there? It's a big coaching field. There has to be someone better than Doc.

Wow he(Ainge) actually states Doc did a good job in the article. I guess Ainge is planning on rebuilding off lottery picks.

Did you really think Ainge was going to pay and give control to a coach like Larry Brown?

SG: I'm already eating a poop hot dog -- it's called "the Doc Rivers extension."

Simmons has been railing against Rivers for the last year, as well as railing against the Boston media for not being harder against the team. On the bright side, this gives him easy material for the summer and next season.

Why doesn't Ainge just coach the team himself? Does he like the idea of having someone to deflect blame from when things go wrong?

We have a winner!

Rivers is a nice guy. The Boston media love him because he's likable and accessible. No matter that he can't coach a lick.

Pieman has it right. With most of the Boston sports media, if you give them the time of day and make their job easier then they will make excuses for you. Rivers learned this art which was perfected by Drew Bledsoe during his time with the Patriots. If you don't talk to them or just give basic answers to their questions or queries, like say a Manny Ramirez or Bill Belichick, then they will look to take shots at you any chance they get.
