Something like this should seem like a bigger deal for some reason and it just didn't end up feeling that way. It was cool when they heard the chopper coming and everything, but the payoff just didn't work for me.
This episode will mean more if they expand on the rescue mission going to shit and what they knew on the outside. If it's more stumbling through the jungle this episode won't mean so much.
Edit: Fuck, I forgot the Lost graphic tag.

The parachutist had a Portuguese copy of Catch-22, which ties into the Portguese-speaking guys at the listening station who contacted Penny last season. So she IS on her way in some respects, and the pic of Desmond in the book just erases all doubt.

Can anyone confirm? And if it is, what does that mean?

Here is a pic (lost.cubit.net) I found that confirms this - I thought the camera went pretty quickly over that picture. It caught me my surprise that the end of the episode was actually when Des and Penny first meet, but now that I think about it, I guess other flashbacks haven't necessarily been in chronological order, either. We couldn't figure out who the woman at the end was, as she knew Desmond's name, but I guess that if she had the Portuguese connection, that would be enough right there.

Nice, but I still gotta lean towards, "Awww, Charlie! DUCK!" The glare of killing death that Charlie had was *priceless*.
The buildup at the end was neat. It was sad to see Desmond's hope that it was still Penny get crushed at the end. I'm assuming by his earnestness that originally the parachuter he saw in his vision was Penny. The picture changed, indeed.
I've been trying to mull over whether his saving Charlie again was cowardice or not. It wasn't 'cause it changed the picture, but it was 'cause he didn't have the courage to see the original vision through. | Parts Unknown

You know, there is a lot of Kate Hate out there already, and her getting some payback Jack action with Sawyer isn't going to help. It actually made you feel sorry for Sawyer, the biggest jerk on the island. Or maybe 2nd biggest now.
This was the 1st episode written by comics phenom Brian K. Vaughan, hence the Flash-Superman race debate I am sure.

Prior to being on the island, I don't think that Sawyer would have minded being used for sex but he is starting to let his emotions show.
So did Pawn Shop Lady get Desmond fired from the monastery so he could meet Penny, break her heart (and his in the process), sail around the world & crash into LOST island ?

I imagine a trailer for this episode would've promised: "a big secret will be revealed!" And the big secret would've turned out to be "where Desmond got the word 'brother' from".
I really like the Hurley Adventure Teams that have been popping up in recent episodes. Why was I NOT surprised that Hurley knew all about the Superman-Flash charity race? I'm sure he also knows the difference between Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-X and all the others. So if anyone can understand the island's wackiness, it'd be Hurley.
To add on to kentish's question: have we seen the brother of Desmond's girlfriend before? (the guy who walked in and decked Des in the monsatery) | Quezzy

Nah, last week's trailer was basically just a "there's only five weeks left!" trailer. I think it was actually the first week in a while that they didn't even reveal whose flashback it was going to be. They did this week though.
I agree that this wasn't as good as the usual Desmond episode and I was kind of disappointed by the ending. Obviously Charlie wasn't going to die after they showed it happen in the beginning but I thought maybe Desmond would tackle him out of the way and the arrow would hit Hurley or Jin instead or something exciting like that. Finding a chick we don't know in a tree isn't really that exciting.
Some good moments in this episode though. I like both of the Sawyer quotes mentioned and the Jack/Sawyer ping pong showdown, Sawyer finally beat him at something! And of course the Flash/Superman debate, Flash all the way. | Dexley's Midnight Jogger
