So I'm scanning all the threads here and I keep reading about Toronto's "heart" and "gritty determination". No, I have a better description....NO TALENT GOONS!!!

Yes, I am an Islanders fan. A loyal, long suffering Islanders fan who was greatly looking forward to watching meaningful hockey in May for the first time in nine years. Before this year my second favorite team was the Maple Leafs because I HAD sympathy for their long running drought.

*cough 67 cough*

If the Maple Leafs had played tough, aggressive but CLEAN hockey and knocked us out I would have had no problems. But no, that couldn't happen. No no no....Darcy Tucker SAYS he's going to get Peca, takes him out AND NOTHING IS DONE! Gary Roberts, a player I have long respected for his aggressive but CLEAN play blatantly goes for Kenny's head, takes him out AND NOTHING IS DONE! Of course this isn't anything new. Just ask any Devils fan about Tie Domi.

So for all this, for Pat Quinn and his whining and constant fuckups I hope Toronto never wins a cup with Darcy Tucker or Gary Roberts playing and I hope to God Quinn never gets near another opportunity ever again...even if I have to root for the Rangers!

Strong words oh Masked one?!
A Fishstick who would consider rooting the Rangers?
Ofcourse what is grit in the eyes of one guy is being a goon in the eyes of the other.
It just depends on what side you root for, and when talking about the Leafs, and them winning 2 series against all odds it is easy to see them as heroes.

I was rooting for the Leafs all the way though.
But I am sure the Islanders will have another great shot next year, unlike the Rangers btw..

As the token Rangers Fan on this board, may I please say Thanks but No Thanks - I would rather miss the playoffs than have a fishstick fan root for my team.

Hey I picked the Rangers to go all the way this year before the season started.

Of course, I was way off... but my heart was in it.

What can I say, I really like the Jerseys...

Zimmy, please don't pick Toronto next year. (grin)

And...you like the Rangers jerseys??? Very classic of you.

I'm more of an Islanders man myself. Still have the garbage can I painted #22 over about 20 years back in dedication to Mike Bossy.

I do think both NY teams are going to be strong next year. In fact, the whole East will be stronger...

What is THIS?? Wales Conference hockey fans? Adams division no less. Guys, GUYS, REAL hockey is played on the other side of the bracket. Anyway, sorry had to get that out there to try and ruffle some feathers.

Isles, Rangers, Leafs, seeing either of those teams win the Cup would be good.

Ha, ha, haven't heard the term *Fishstick* for an Isles fan in a LONG time. I stand amongst a core group of hockey fanatics that KNOW what they're talking about. Joy.

Anyways, just kidding.
The Islanders have alot more to look forward to than the Rangers, and I am sure they will deliver some punishment to the rest of the league next year.

Toronto might have trouble keeping some of their guys, especially Joseph who proved his worth imo.

Sour grapes taste bad, don't they?

Tell Peca to stop admiring his passes next time. Tucker's hit was legal. Dirty? Maybe - but legal by the letter of the NHL law. They need to change that rule - you shouldn't be allowed to hit at the knees like that. Not Tucker's fault Peca was too busy watching his pass though.

And I'm sure you had no problem with Steve Webb skating all over the entire ice hitting/elbowing everybody with a Leaf jersey on (and jumping two feet into the air in the process) with no charging penalties being called while you chanted "Steve Webb *clap clap*".

The Isles are a young and talented team, and they'll learn from the series. The Leafs antagonized them, and they lost their composure. The Isles antagonized the Leafs, and the Leafs lost THEIR composure. Result - a war of a series. The fact that the Leafs not only defeated New York, but Ottawa as well in ANOTHER 7-gamer, and gave a really tough Carolina team everybody they had is simply amazing.

I would like Big Bad to name me one instance where a Maple Leaf was knocked out of a game.

Buddy, if you can't stands the heat, get outta the kitchen! Welcome the NHL playoffs, my friend - the place where NOBODY plays clean hockey.

See you next year (maybe). ;)

Why did you quote me when you didn't answer the question? All you did was throw a couple of cliches out. Why not mention that Gary Roberts gave 110%? Or that Matts Sundin is a warrior? I never said that the Islanders were saints in the series, but they didn't have to knock guys out to win the series. Toronto is a DIRTY team with a coach who can't even properly fill out a lineup card. Here's hoping for 35 more years of futility in Canada eh?

He quoted you to point out that even if he did answer your question, all you're doing is whining about the ``injustice'' of Peca being knocked out by a questionable hit.

Instead of worrying about Toronto (a team you obviously despise), why don't you lobby your precious fishsticks to get a general manager who can build a team that's not so reliant on one player? If Peca getting knocked out cost the Isles the series, I'd say they've got some development to do before they're going to be a threat to anyone. But that isn't it, the Isles have a solid team; they just shit the bed this year. Get over it.

And yes, Roberts gave 110% and Sundin was impressive coming back from injury. Where was Yashin? Standing around with his thumb up his ass. Toronto proved that when marquee players go down, others need to step up. Where were your boys when Peca went down?

As for Toronto being a `dirty' team, that sounds an awful lot like sour grapes. But I guess when they beat your team you need some kind of excuse to bolster your pride. It just wouldn't be right to admit that the Islanders got taken out by a better team this year.

You can bash Pat Quinn all you want; he coached one team to an Olympic gold medal and another to the Stanley Cup semi finals. He's not crying about his year; I'm sure he could care less what you think about him.

And by-the-by, ask Mike Milbury what dirty hockey is all about. Maybe a master of ugly stickwork like him needs to come out of the front office and teach your fishsticks how to fight fire with fire in the big bad NHL.

Yashin has NEVER been a playoff performer and probably never will be.

I knew the Isles taking a chance on him was silly. But then I've had the priviledge of watching the Sens choke year, after year, after year.... (And I love it!)

This is funny because

a) Alexis Yashin was tied for the playoff LEAD in points after the first round with 7

b) how about the 90 ft check Gary Roberts gave to kenny jonnson knocking him out the last two games? How about Darcy Tucker telling anyone who would listen he would be taking out Peca in the days before??

c) how can ANYONE praise Pat Quinn, who can not write a lineup card out properly, leaving Gary Roberts benched in a crucial playoff game?? Or playing a man short for the first three games of the series because he didn't want anyone to know Matts Sundin was injured? Toronto won IN SPITE of their coach, just like Canada won this year IN SPITE of Quinn.

Like i said when i first posted this, my second favorite team WAS the Leafs. If they beat us I was going to root FOR them because the fans deserve a winner. But winning not because of talent, but because of cheap shots made me extremely bitter.

Again, you're not proving anything:

a) Yashin had 7 games to get those seven points. How did his PPG stand up? Besides, 7 points in the first round means nothing if you don't make it to round 2. And by the way, it's Alexei, not Alexis (a girl's name, last I checked). You're such a fan that you don't know this?

b) How about all the suspensions the league handed out as a result of these great travesties you mention. Oh wait; there weren't any suspensions...except the one to Shayne Corson (that was well deserved, and you never mentioned, I might add). At the same time, Corson had the balls to take on the Islanders' primary (and huge!) goon, Cairns. It was ballsy demonstrations like Corson's taking 12 head shots from the biggest guy in the game that inspired Toronto their game 7 win.

c) I can praise Pat Quinn because Canada is the reigning Olympic champion in hockey right now. How many medals/cups/presidents' trophies has New York's coach led them to? I thought so. You CAN'T argue with results.

You saying, ``Canada won this year in SPITE of Quinn,'' suggests to me that you not only didn't watch any of Canada's games, but that you know very little about hockey.
I submit that Wayne Gretzky has a better head for hockey than `The Masked Hungarian'. Wayne says Canada wouldn't have won without Quinn, in fact Wayne gave him the job; I believe Mr. Gretzky.

Without Quinn Toronto wouldn't have made the playoffs in the first place; those were his `mistakes' to make. What does it say that his team got to the semifinals despite those `mistakes' while the Islanders made an early exit, as they have just about every year they've made the playoffs since 1984? You want to see a team whose coach was inneffectual? Look at Dallas, an incredibly talented team that missed the playoffs completely...

You talk about all of the dirty play of the Leafs. What about Cairns carving up Roberts' face (unpunished) and Webb running Tucker in game 6 (unpunished)? I'm sure it was retaliation, right? Just New York fighting fire with fire? Pffffft.

As for ``my second favorite team WAS the Leafs,'' what exactly do you mean by that, that you were ready to jump on the bandwagon but you couldn't live with yourself because they're so ``dirty?'' Or was it like ``I like Jane, but if Jane doesn't like me then I like Kelly?'' where your opinion depends on what someone does for YOU? Toronto's been playing the same game all year; if it took you this long to figure out you don't like the way they play I suggest you should start paying better attention.

For the record, my team lost too (the Canadiens; I don't really like the Leafs). And I was disappointed. But I'm not whining about it like a four year-old who dropped his ice cream...

a)Crucify me, I spelled his first name wrong. The argument was Yashin is not a playoff performer. He tallied 7 points in 7 games. This does not make him Joe Sakic, but it's much better than his past history.

b) I didn't bring up Corson because he WAS suspended. Justice was served there. And don't make Shayne out to be this brave guy. Do you remember how that fight started with Cairns? Corson went after notorious Islanders enforcer JASON BLAKE first! Then Cairns stepped in for his teammate and beat the hell out of Shayne. Brave, brave Shayne, inspiring his teammates by kicking Cairns with his skate! Way to inspire Shayne, using a move five year olds won't make.

c) You want to argue results, fine. Pat Quinn has as many Stanley Cups as Peter Laviolette, NONE. Quinn has a gold medal. Peter Laviolette, in his first year coached the Islanders to the fourth best improvement in hockey history. In the minors, he coached Providence to the winningest season in AHL history with a 56-16-4-4 record and to a 15-4 post-season run as they captured the AHL's Calder Cup championship. At the conclusion of that season, he was named the AHL's Outstanding Coach. His two-year coaching record in Providence was 89-54-10-7 (.609 win percentage) with a 25-8 playoff record (.758 percentage).

d) Pat Quinn was also nearly shot by all of Canada, along with Gretzky early on in the Olympics. Or have you forgotten the national panic that occurred? Oh, LOVE the argument you used defending Quinn's coaching ability. First I don't watch the game/not a fan of hockey. Then you come back with, Wayne Gretzky knows what he's doing. WHAT DID PAY QUINN DO? Why was Wayne Gretzky showered with all the attention and given the credit for Canada's win? Maybe because it was Wayne's team and all Quinn had to do was not fuck it up!! Please enlighten me as to pat quinn's great coaching strategies during the Olypmics. Again, who fills out a lineup card wrong, leaving GARY ROBERTS on the bench during the playoffs?? How can that possibly happen?? You know what that means, Toronto won IN SPITE of pat quinn. How can you say that no other coach would have gotten Toronto into the playoffs?? Any team with Cujo and Sundin should get in!

e) Was Gary Roberts or Darcy Tucker knocked out for even a period? Did both men run two guys out of the SERIES? Don't compare the two.

f) Finally I said the reason i would root for them was because the toronto fans deserve to see a freakin banner in their lifetimes. But since NO i don't have TSN and do not watch the Leafs play I didn't know "they were playing like that all year."

Lastly, seeing that you are a Canadians fan, I'm curious as to your reaction to the McLaren hit.

I'm not saying that Laviolette's not a fine up-and-coming coach. But, sorry, the AHL is the MINOR leagues. The NHL is the MAJOR leagues. Plenty of coaches have won Calder Cups and yet haven't lasted a season in the NHL. As for improvement, Quinn has led Toronto to better seasons than they've seen in 40 years. He also took the Canucks to the Stanley Cup final in 1994. He's also the only combination GM and Coach in the NHL. You argue that Toronto is very talented, so Quinn must be doing a good job as GM, but then you argue he's ``holding them back as coach?'' Ninja, please.

And Canada was calling for the players' heads during the Olympics, not Quinn's. Quinn's great coaching strategies are the ones that brought home a gold medal. Have you ever played competitive sports? Have you ever been in a playoff series? Have you ever stepped on the ice and played a game of hockey? Without a strong coach to unite the team and get them to buy into offensive and defensive strategies, you won't win with all the talent in the world. Ask Mike Peca what he thinks of Pat Quinn; I'm sure he won't slag the man.

Again with the ``Toronto won in spite of Quinn.'' You can't get that out of your head, can you? Yes, he made a mistake. Did that mistake the define Toronto in the playoffs? No, it didn't. Playing games with stars injured, half a lineup full of AHL players and a head coach in the hospital defined Toronto in the playoffs this year.
I would love to see Laviolette thrive under that kind of adversity; oh wait, he couldn't do that well with an almost full lineup, could he? When Pat Quinn wins it's because even though he's incompetent, he incites his players to play dirty. When Laviolette wins, it's because he's a talented and motivational man. When Quinn loses it's because he's such a fuckup. When Laviolette loses, it's because ``He Wuz Robbed.'' I'm glad we've got someone like you who's been in both locker rooms and can enlighten us so.

Jesusmarymotherandjoseph, I feel like I'm arguing November '97 in Montreal with Bret Hart here...

``Any team with Cujo and Sundin should get in?'' By that logic, any team with Jason Arnott, Mike Modano, Darien Hatcher, and Eddie Belfour should get into the playoffs too. But wait, Dallas had all those guys (guys who have already won Cups, unlike Cujo and Sundin)? And they didn't make the playoffs? And their coach was fired? Hmmmmmmmmm.

And more whining about guys getting knocked out. That's all it is, whining. My reaction to the McLaren hit was that it was a pretty brutal. However, Montreal showed character and heart, and won the god damned series. Your team was unable to do that, so you piss and moan about ``injustice.''

I've got a hint for you: there's no such thing as justice in professional sport. Talk to a Sacramento Kings fan about the LA Lakers this year. Talk to anyone who played against the Philedelphia Flyers in the mid-seventies. Jesuschristonacross you seem to want people to say, ``Yes, we should have given the New York Islanders a bye to the semi-finals because they were so beat up by those big nasty evil Toronto Maple Leafs.''

You keep crying, I'll keep laughing. I've been on the ice; I know that for every ``holeee-shit dirty hit'' that everyone sees there are twenty or more incidents of sticks to the nuts, hacking, spearing, cross-checks to the lower back, trips, and other wonderful things. Ask an NFL lineman what it's like in the trenches in a playoff game. Ask an NBA center what it's like at the post in a playoff game. You sound like you've got too weak a stomach for the playoffs. Good thing your team made an early exit.
