I discovered this on the WrestleCrap forums:

From WWE Mobile -

WWE.com has learned that today in Chicago, WWE officials have agreed on the immediate release of Joey Mercury.

UPDATE: It's added on the WWE website:

Anybody smelling a story in the mainstream press tomorrow that Mercury was fired for failing a drug test? I sure am, especially considering that Mercury failing a drug test was the reason MNM was broken up in the first place last year. Nothing like the E seizing upon an opportunity to puff its chest out and say, "see, we're taking care of the steroid problem".

I hate to see this, as I am a fan of MNM. But if it means the WWE is now forced to make a decision to push Nitro as a single, instead of this half assed push as a tag and as a single, then fine.

It is logical to assume this is drug related. I would also assume there may be similar releases in the near future.

Joey was on the indys for YEARS before they finally brought him in. MNM was a great thing for these two guys then they broke them up and did nearly nothing with (Mercury) Matthews, gawd I should have drank the 40 all at once yet beside the point, for six months. I think he was great in his role but the E tends to do this to A LOT of workers.

Holy, wow, he's my age...born in 1979. I feel his pain...quote the jwrestle nevermore. *sigh* Excuse me...I really need to get off here before I get really weird.

Wasn't the story at the time that MNM was broken up as a punishment for Melina and Nitro not showing the proper respect to more senior members of the locker room? Although you really can't say that they got the worst of the deal vs. the de-push of solo Mercury. Considering the shot he took in that ladder match recently, one would hope that there's a pretty good cause for cutting someone loose WrestleMania week.

Far as I know, there's been no repercussions to date for Edge, Orton, Mysterio, or Helms about getting linked to the recent SI.com story, has there?

People were unhappy with Melina (and Nitro), but MNM was broken up because Joey was sent to rehab. IIRC, it was a painkiller addiction, and it seems reasonable to guess it might have come back in such a way that WWE didn't feel they could employ him anymore.

I guess it could've been the drug tests, though when they've run them in the past, it's taken weeks for them to come back, not 6 days. It's more likely Joey just appeared "in no condition to perform" at some point in the last week. That's the simplest way to do it, though it doesn't have all the fun conspiracy aspects. If they wanted Mercury to be a steroid fall guy, they probably would've mentioned steroids in his release.

According to this week's Observer, no WWE wrestler will be penalized for violating the Wellness Policy before it existed, even if it's just coming to light right now.

Also, as I understand it, they've been running a more "active" drug scan since they got caught up in the negative publicity of the SI steroid scandal, and Mercury might have gotten caught on strike two at a time when he couldn't aford to.

I doubt it, unless TNA want to enhance their reputation of being a WWE refuge. And one that caters to substance abusers, at that.

I just figure they've already shown that they are willing to go down that road.

MNM Idol? Who knows? Instead of the $1,000,000 Tough Enough Challenge, or the Diva Search...?

I'm sorry to see Mercury go. I liked him and Nitro together; they had awesome chemistry.
