Tonight, since Heroes is on hiatus, they showed a 2-hour edition of Deal or No Deal on NBC. Two - yes, two - of the contestants picked the million dollar case. Unfortunately for both of them, they both quit early; that is, they took the banker's offer.

In both instances, Howie seemed to be stressing extra hard that something special could be going on. In the first instance, he kept saying the contestant could be making history by picking the million dollar case. Note that he was doing this relatively early on; it wasn't like the he was doing this with only a couple of cases left.

In the second instance, the contestant quit SUPER early. I'm talking about taking an $81,000 offer with like 10 cases still in play. After throwing to a commercial break, Howie questioned whether the contestant quit too early and if it was possible that he ALSO picked the million dollar case. Sure enough, he had.

They have always told us that they randomize the dollar amounts in each case and that nobody knows what is in what case. However, after tonight's episode, I find that claim at least a little suspect. If Howie didn't know beforehand what was in the cases, he at least knew after the contestants took their deals or maybe even after they picked their original case.

Anybody else catch this episode and/or have any thoughts on my admittedly out-there conspiracy theory?

I appreciate the admittance, since Standards and Practices were put in place to keep rigging away. Noel Edmonds on the UK DoND always says that "you make the deal that's right for you." For roided bagpipes guy, $81K was the right time for him. Stupid? You bet, with a board that had at LEAST four amounts higher than the offer. But we're not up there -- he is, and it's easy to say that back here.

OTOH, you had the elderly gentleman who had NO safety net... but should have gone one more in my mind.

That's the fun about the show sometimes; you have some family/friends saying go on and others saying to stop... it's like the Angel/Devil scene in Animal House with Pinto.

I don't watch the show, but one thought occurred to me as I read your theory: it's possible that they record a lot more than they show, and so it's in the editing that they tip off that it's a big moment or whatever.

I had that thought when I watched the episode where a big bearded guy was playing. He was picking the cases like clockwork, like maybe he'd figured out some sort of pattern from watching. Howie told him 'you're lucky', almost a little too sternly, then they hit the lights so you couldn't see the cases. Guy wound up walking away with 10 bucks after he'd been offered over 200k.

Then again, maybe the 'is it rigged?' theory could be an alure they want to set up.

I get what you're saying, but if you watch the show regularily, he acts exactly like this and says exactly this to pretty much every contestant. He's actually gotten more by-the-numbers as the show's gone on too.

They also advertise pretty much every episode as if "this one is a history making episode!" too, which doesn't help. It just turns out that in this case, the contestants actually did pick the million dollar case. I've also seen shows where both picked the penny or dollar.

Also, I guess nothing's stopping them from taping a whoooooole bunch of games at a time, and then decide which ones get used for which shows to save the million dollar cases for a show like this.

Do they really want us to believe these contestants aren't actors?
Last night Howie "randomly" picked an employee of Hot Dog on a Stick to play the game. She was better looking than ANY fast food employee I have every encountered-even with the hat and glasses. Miraculously they were able to round up her whole family to come to the studio.
She was more comfortable on camera than anyone off the street had any right to be. (Which can be said for 99% of the other people on DOND).

If they are using professional actors and models as contestants, shouldn't they have to disclose that?

They're really not actors.

They're also not "randomly" selected.

NBC seems to engage in hyperbole with a lot of their shows these days. They do this with Heroes as well, which kind of drives me nuts.

Granted, I haven't seen a Hot Dog On A Stick since high school, but I seem to recall those places being the Hooters of the Meat On A Stick food court joints. Maybe its just the way their employees "churn" the lemonade...
