LAX vs. Team 3D
-Good brawl in the crowd, helped out by effective camerawork and direction. Brought up memories of classic ECW brawls between Awesome and Tanaka. Impressive and scary looking flying hurricanrana by Homicide onto Brother Ray. The Latino Nation hits the ring to assault Team 3D, outnumbering 3D by about 10-2. Johnny Rodz comes to make the save…? Somehow, Rodz takes out all the latinos one by one, just like how you’d fight ninjas. The latinos all attack Rodz, and now a ton of black guys are attacking the latinos like street warfare. There’s a schmozz at ringside with the groups, when Ray jumps off the top rope to land on everybody outside – very strange to see a fat man fly like that. Team 3D is near victory, but Alex Shelley interferes and slams Devon in the face with his video camera, then puts away Devon with a frogsplash through a table. Homicide covers for the win.

Winners: LAX

Interview: Rhino
-Rhino says he’s scared. Very subdued interview to sell how dangerous the Elevation-X match is.

James Storm & Jackie Moore vs. Petey Williams & Gail Kim
-Amazing to see how far Petey has fallen since I first started watching TNA PPVs two years ago. This match is moving very slowly – the bullrope gimmick limits how much these guys can do. Petey’s doing all he can to put on a good match, but Storm is a mismatch for him. Petey hits a cool-looking double-leg cradle DDT for a 2-count. The guys and girls are taking their turns wrestling. Storm hits a superkick on Petey after a nutshot by Jackie.

Winners: James Storm & Jackie Moore

Interview: Scott Steiner
-Says Angle should worry about him, not vice versa. Christian shows up in a panic, can’t believe Tomko is in Japan tonight. Says he’s not worried because Scott is like family to him. Steiner snaps on him. Cage says he has an idea and kidnaps Leticia the interviewer.

Crossface Chickenface Submission Match
Senshi vs. The Austin Starr
-Back and forth match. Decent, but not great. The presence of Backlund at ringside became distracting. Senshi taps out Starr with the crossface chicken hold. Backlund tries to shake Senshi’s hand after the match, but Starr attacks and locks in the crossface hold on Backlund, who sold the move better than 95% of today’s young wrestlers know how to sell.

Winner: Senshi

Interview: AJ Styles
-Says Rhino’s ego has led to Rhino being out of his element, so he has the advantage. Predicts victory – he’s going to throw Rhino off the structure.

Christy Hemme’s Mystery Team vs. V.K.M.
-Christy’s team is the Heartbreakers. They’re getting the same intro that they received in their WWE debut. Indeed, they look really small compared to V.K.M. Decent work in the match, but the crowd’s just not buying the Heartbreakers.

Winners: VKM

Backstage: Christian approaches Abyss, manipulates him into having his corner later tonight. Cage plants the seeds for an Abyss/Joe feud. They close with a shake-and-bake fist pump.

X-Division Championship – Best 2 out of 3 falls
Jerry Lynn vs. Chris Sabin
-A few minutes into the match, there’s a disruption in the crowd, and for the next five minutes, the crowd wasn’t hardly watching the match. Sabin was visibly furious with whoever was causing a ruckus in the crowd and had to be reminded by referee Earl Hebner to keep his mind on the match. I believe the girl known as “Monkey Girl” may have been involved. Jerry wins the first fall with a DDT. The crowd is finally watching the match and very pro-Jerry. Lynn hits a nice Asai moonsault into the crowd, landing on Sabin. Sabin wins the second fall with his feet on the ropes. Jerry Lynn is having a great match. Sabin hits two cradle shocks for the win. Christopher Daniels (sporting a beard) comes to ringside in a Sting mask, then attacks both Sabin and Lynn.

Interview: Jim Cornette / Christy
-Cornette hypes the Lockdown PPV. Christy interrupts to let him know that she has a few more tricks up her sleeve.

Elevation-X Match:
AJ Styles vs. Rhino
-Pretty fun match with plenty of drama, considering the dangers involved. We saw a Gore on top of the structure, the use of some “white powder” which allegedly blinded AJ Styles, and a clever sequence with AJ hiding inside the structure itself.

Winner: Rhino

Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner
-Blah match – who’s surprised? Angle wins with a sunset flip.

Winner: Kurt Angle

Last Rites Match:
Abyss vs. Sting
-Pretty ridiculous match, as there’s a casket inside the ring. There are even cheap-looking candlesticks on the ringposts. Five minutes into the match, the crowd is loudly chanting “FIRE RUSSO.” Nice. This is soooooo cheesy. Abyss even has a tombstone. Don West accurately calls this a “gruesome sight”… But alas, he was only referring to the blood on Sting’s face, not the match. Sting eventually puts Abyss and us out of our collective misery. The casket raises to the ceiling. Haven’t we seen this happen repeatedly anytime they needed an excuse to give Undertaker some time off?

NWA World Championship:
Christian vs. Samoa Joe
-Well-paced match. Joe pulled out all stops. Christian proved he’s got main event skills, but a longer title reign will help him eliminate all doubt. A few ref bumps toward the end. Christian wins with his feet on the ropes.

Winner: Christian

- - - - - -

Overall... too many gimmick matches. What's the point of that, when the next PPV is all cage matches? Whether Russo booked a lot of this or not, his fingerprints seemed to be on much of it. I'd give it 6/10. I didn't mind Christian winning and Joe losing. Not one bit. Christian's doing an awesome job so far and has really come into his own.

Samoa Joe lost with Cage's feet on the ropes. Is this 1988 or something?

Angle beats Steiner via the sunset flip. Jesus Christ. Someone book a real finish.

It's silly to complain about the booking of Joe at this point as I think most people agree that they've completely killed him off.

I do like that Christian led the shortest heel stable of all time, though.

Another blah offering from TNA.

LAX v. Team 3D
It was a good match, up until the end. Seriously, was the world DEMANDING Vince Russo redo the Gang Wars storyline from ten years ago? Look for a group of white bikers to show up next week. And why the hell was Alex Shelley there?

James Storm & Miss Jackie v. Petey Williams & Gail Kim: Bullrope Match
Could have been semi-decent, but these guys were limited by the gimmick. Funny how that happens on a Russo-booked show. And sure enough, it would be a running theme tonight.

Senshi v. THE Austin Starr: Crossface Chickenwing Submission Match
Well, I was half right in the prediction thread. There was a SHOCKING SWERVE~!, but it was Starr turning on Backlund and not the other way around like I thought. The match was ok, but they were limited by the gimmick.

VKM v. The Heartbreakers
I didn't even know who the Heartbreakers were when they were in WWE. Why did anyone think they'd garner any kind of reaction. And like I thought in the prediction thread, Christy's team was completely ineffectual. And it needs to be said again after seeing the segments that followed this match: Christy deserves WAY better than this crap.

Chris Sabin v. Jerry Lynn: 2 out of 3 falls
Sabin forgot the first lesson of Wrestling 101: Always, ALWAYS focus on the match, not the idiots in the crowd. Came damn close to being match of the night. Lynn's still got it. I like the new look for Daniels.

AJ Styles v. Rhino: Elevation X
The focus wasn't so much on the match, but on the gimmick. I'm ready to call the gimmick a failure. I paid my money for wrestling, not a round of hide and seek. And it's another case of the gimmick limiting the wrestlers.

Kurt Angle v. Scott Steiner: Wrestling match
A Wrestling match? That's such a crazy gimmick, it just might work. Unfortunately, it didn't work with these two. Angle was WAY off his game tonight. He and Steiner were both winded within minutes. And a sunset flip? Since when does Angle win with a sunset flip? Both guys got a well-deserved "That was weak" chant afterwards.

Sting v. Abyss: Last Rites match
Well, it wasn't as bad as Sting's Flaming Torch match with Vampiro from the dying days of WCW, but it was damn close. This match is more significant for the audible "Fire Russo" chant from the crowd. I heartily agree, but since when does anyone listen to the fans?

Funny aside: Backstage, Christian Cage screams that nothing's going right tonight. Insert comment about shoot comments that aren't supposed to be shoot comments here.

Christian v. Samoa Joe: NWA-TNA World Title match
This was match of the night, but that's not saying too much. It was heading for greatness until the weak, weak, WEAK ending. Seriously, Christian won with a FEET ON THE ROPES pin? This is a PPV MAIN EVENT. There should be NO main event that has that ending. Shitty ending (did I mention the ending sucked) aside, this was Christian's best match in ages.

Shitty PPV. Definitely no recommendation here.

I'm tired of people bitching about Joe's booking. Joe was not hurt by losing today and he has not been killed. Joe is still mega over, is still a main eventer and is still going to be World Champion.

If Joe beat Christian it WOULD kill Christian's title reign, a title reign that if it lasts long enough can EASILY be the best World Title reign in TNA history. TNA did the right thing by having Christian win. If Joe wins the title tonight it means nothing. If Joe wins the title after Christian has a meaningful title reign it means something.

Nash came to Shelley's defense and they teased a showdown before LAX attacked from behind and Shelley/LAX gave Bubba a 3 on 1 beating. Either LAX and Shelley/Nash have an alliance or Shelley/Nash are the next feud with the Dudleys.

I stand corrected. This is from someone at the show:

"During the Sting/Abyss match Russo was standing right in front of me, but sat when the chants started

One of the biggest pops was when an unruly fan was being thrown out by (Ron or Don) Harris (who was working security for real) during the Sabin-Lynn match

They popped HARD when he choked the guy out"

That's fine and good, but people were saying these same things about Joe BEFORE Christian was signed over a year ago. Remember, everyone thought that Joe was going to take the belt off Jarrett to usher in the new era of TNA. What happened? Christian comes in, Joe is slid down the card, then Sting comes in, they have the lenghy build-up to Sting and Jarrett. Angle jumps and then Joe starts losing every big match he's in. Look at where Joe was a year ago and look at now. Is he MORE over? Is he a BIGGER star? No, the timing was right a while ago for him to be champ and he's losing his heat because of it.

Everyone said that TNA was going to wait till they had primetime, or until a big PPV or until (fill in the blank) and the casual audience was at a high point so Joe's win would jumpstart things. It's not happening.

I've said it for a while now, Joe is RVD in the original ECW. They've completely screwed the pooch on both his booking and his eventual title win. IF he ever wins the belt, it's not going to mean as much as it could have. How long does Christian have to be champ before Joe can beat him? And where does Angle or the inevitably returning Jarrett fit in? What happens if a Jericho or someone joins TNA? You telling me Joe isn't getting fucked over by politics here? Shit man, the internet exploded when CM Punk lost to the teacher, but we're saying that Samoa Joe (who is the biggest "homegrown" star TNA has, a guy who arguably is the best wrestler in America) losing every big match he's been in is good booking?

My point is, for a while now they've shown they have no faith in Joe as their number one guy. I would assume that's because he's NOT an ex-WWE guy. If they wanted him to be champion, he would have been champion a long time ago.

What's annoying is that the WWE can be cutesy with their world champions. They don't HAVE to put the title on their biggest draw. But for a glorified indy doing sub 30,000 PPV numbers, having a former WWE mid-card guy as your champ and having the guy who's supposed to be your FRANCHISE guy jobbing out to every ex WWE guy in site, that's some fucking HORRIBLE booking.

Christian, God bless him. Not a draw. He's basically doing Jeff Jarrett's character right now.

Here's an interesting thing, since AJ was champion in May 2005, here's a list of TNA champs...

Raven
Jeff Jarrett
Rhino
Jeff Jarrett
Christian Cage
Jeff Jarrett
Sting
Abyss
Christian Cage

So, with the exception of Abyss (who won via DQ and was a transistion champ) every champion since May 2005 has been an ex star of either WWE, ECW, or WCW.

Glad to see TNA has created new stars.

I thought this was, for the most part, a good show, lots better than last month's, and by and large exceeded my expectations. Too many gimmicks, of course, but surprisingly straightforward given that.

3D vs. LAX was better than expected, despite the ridiculous "70-year-old man CLEARS THE RING" segment -- but I guess that's LAX's Achilles heel, judging from this and the Bullet Bob thing. Also, I found the whole "here come a bunch of black guys, because it's a GHETTO brawl" aspect kinda queasifying. (And where were the Italians?) Nevertheless -- Hernandez's dive over the top was crazy, and his Crackerjack on Devon was cool, too. Ray actually sold a couple of moves, too!

James Storm and Miss Jackie Moore vs. Petey Williams and Gail Kim was -- well, I only was half paying attention because I just don't care. Hey, no Chris Harris? Does that mean that this feud WILL CONTINUE?

Senshi vs. The Austin Starr was pretty good and it sure looks like they're going to have Starr vs. Backlund in the near future. Oddly intriguing!

It's False, I don't know what you mean when you say, "There was a SHOCKING SWERVE~!, but it was Starr turning on Backlund and not the other way around like I thought" -- how is Starr attacking Backlund a SS~!? Those two don't like each other and weren't allied -- there's no turn, and no "swerve" there at all.

VKM vs. The Heartbreakers was bad. Kip is repulsive, BG is a non-factor, and the Heartbreakers are just dull (I don't understand the logic behing "It's better to get a lousy team that was in WWE than a good team that hasn't"). Do I get a prediction point in saying that Hemme's team name would be a "subtle" dig at WWE? I know, they've used the name before, but still! Anyway -- I doubt that we'll see the Heartbreakers again -- I think that the other "tricks" up Hemme's "sleeve" are more WWE reject teams (and she already got a hold of Shaniqua's riding crop!).

Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn -- good stuff. Daniel's appearance was weird, since he didn't really figure into the finish of the match and only distracted from it. Since he laid them both out, why not just run in after wards? Anyway -- pretty weird to see a "two out of three" falls match with only one finishing move being hit the entire time.

Rhino vs. AJ Styles was scary -- I watched the replay edition, so I was pretty sure (since it was being re-broadcast) that no one actually died, but still. It was crazy how the cameras were cutting to people in the crowd, and they were praying or turned away or whatnot. I'm glad I saw it, because it was very suspenseful, but it wasn't a very good match -- not one you'd need to watch again -- and I don't really want to see another one. (But think how much it cost to build the structure! They've GOTTA get some more use out of it!) Oh, also, If I was TNA, I would've had MEDICS taking AJ out of the ring, rather than security dudes. But hey.

Scott Steiner vs. Kurt Angle was much worse that I was anticipating -- I'm not sure what I was expecting, exactly, but this was pretty lousy. Slow, stilted, awkward. Steiner gave Angle an Olympic Slam and dropped him right on his neck -- scariest spot of the night. I'm not sure why Steiner was able to take an Angle Slam but gets pinned by the world's most tentative sunset flip.

Sting vs. Abyss -- I wasn't at all looking forward to this, but it had some cool stuff, so I guess I have to call this "better than expected." Sting got crazy busted open by a candelabra (!) shot, and some of the other spots where they were busting shit was neat. When the casket lowered and the crowd started chanting "FIRE RUSSO" -- well, that was awesome -- but I have to point out that Tenay and West actually fell silent for a few seconds and let the chants come through loud and clear. Weird, because they never shut up -- I am pretending that there was some sort of political game being played there.

MUTA?! WTF?

Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe was really good -- better than at least two of the Joe/Angle matches. I can't complain about the booking either -- I was rooting for Joe, but Cage has been super awesome as champ, and I have no problem seeing a rematch of this next month (in a STEEL CAGE!)

They must be doing something (horribly horribly) wrong or else the buyrates for the Angle/Joe matches wouldn't have decreased exponentially.

Well, shit, man, yeah, we're talking about TNA. I could end every single paragraph in my post above with "but whatever, these losers are still in TNA, so who cares?"

I mean, what's your point?

That saying someone is still mega-over in the Impact Zone or is will get to win a world belt that Abyss just had isn't much of a defense of the way he's been booked or an indication that it's working. I didn't mean it as a "who cares about TNA" diss, just saying that that criteria doesn't amount to a whole lot.

So -- you want Joe to be booked SO WELL that he travels back in time and prevents Abyss from winning the belt? Is that what it would take?

I'd like Samoa Joe, who was an unstoppable badass until a few months ago, to stop losing every PPV match he's in, and to stop jobbing to weak-ass chairshots, clotheslines, and tope-assisted roll-ups. But that's just me. TNA are doing as good a job bungling Joe as WWE did with Goldberg. Their booking of him is THAT bad.

From the reports I've read on here, it sounds like it was a great PPV just for the 'Fire Russo' chants...

Seems a shame Joe had to lose in that way. If he had to lose in a screwy finish they should have made it MEGA SCREWY. Despite my prediction of Cage retaining, part of me was really thinking that Joe was going to be given the ball (with him leaving ROH and all). Oh well.

I'd say the day when Russo is fired would be great for TNA, but they will just change course again in another 6 months.

Their roster is pretty loaded now they just have to pick a direction and stick with it.

They've already picked a direction, and if news reports are to be believed the hyperactive booking style currently being employed ain't all Russo. The pay-for-play deals that the talent is on mean that management feel that everyone should get face time on TV in order to justify their salary.

There's just so much wrong with the way that the company's being booked right now that people defending it just seem crazy. Why was so much TV time wasted on the Roode/Young saga when they didn't even have an active role on this PPV? Why are Team 3D STILL feuding with LAX after losing a thousand matches to them? And why does every match they have end up being non-title? Why is Chris Harris not in Petey Williams' spot? Or at least a visible part of the rivalry? How is the VKM/Christy angle worth any air time at all? Why is Austin Starr fueding with - and likely jobbing to - an old man, whilst the X Division becomes a two-man show? Why are Scott Steiner and Kurt Angle, inarguably the two most broken-down men on the roster, wrestling each other? Why is AJ Styles, one of the company's best workers, stranded in an interminable feud that covering restrictive gimmick after restrictive gimmick and which started out of thin air? Why has Joe's ascention been put off again and again and again, in order to favour every WWE/WCW name that appears in the company?

The place is a disaster zone right now, and defences like "so-and-so is still over" a worthless because the company is working with the neatest safety net imaginable - an indoctrinated live crowd that's impossibly easy to manipulate. The TNA audience, as it stands, will accept whatever crap is shovelled their way, because they're such die-hard marks for the promotion. Until TNA even TRY to expand beyond preaching to the choir, they're just serving up bad booking for people who refuse to criticize it.

They need to either get two hours or fire some people. And if it is true that they need to pull a 2.0 weekly to get two hours, then let the firing begin, because it is not going to happen with this crap. The unfortunate thing is that if they did fire anybody it would be the young guys and not old ex-wwe guys. I can just see them keeping Team 3d and VKM and letting go of Bobby Roode and Petey Williams, who will be immediately signed to developmental deals by WWE, polished up and debut on Smackdown and work safer matches and making more money. But at least they will not have to non work a PPV (roode) or wrestle a russo gimmick match(Petey). Watching Impact now is like fastfowarding my TIVO, and when I actually do hit the fastfoward button a different face pops up every other second, its sad and funny at the same time

That saying someone is still mega-over in the Impact Zone or is going to win a world belt that Abyss just had isn't much of a defense of the way he's been booked or an indication that it's working.
So -- you want Joe to be booked SO WELL that he travels back in time and prevents Abyss from winning the belt? Is that what it would take?

Noooooooo, but if I were the person trying to defend the booking, I would want to be able to make more of an argument for success than the notion that Joe might in the future win a devalued belt that would be put on Courtney Cox in a cross-promotion with Dirt next week (DQ title change, natch) if the opportunity presented itself.

At the same time, I would thoroughly endorse TNA doing a going back in time/it was all a dream angle.

It's not just WWE Goldberg bad, it's ... go figure, pretty much the same way Russo turned him into just another guy when he first started booking WCW. Spoilers -- coming at the end of the year: the angle where Joe has to recreate his winning streak or get fired! after his whole aura is gone thanks to a bunch of meaningless, random losses. Joe vs. Totally Buff should be good because we already know they're in TNA's rolodex.

Spike already offered them a two-hour deal MONTHS ago. TNA is waiting until ratings go up so they can ask for more in return than what Spike was offering.

As for the Joe debate... it wouldn't mean a hell of a lot right now if Joe won the belt. And if Joe not winning the belt is the problem, then chill out because that means you're saying Joe NEEDS the belt. I'd argue he's doing just fine without it. As viewers, we don't like seeing Joe lose here and there or not be crowned the king shit, but the people still like him. So TNA is probably just trying to elevate as many people as possible into the main event. Which I think is smart. But would I do it the way they're doing it? NOPE. I'm not defending them, but I think I see what they're doing.

There are business reasons behind everything these wrestling companies do. So I don't see why people get so worked up about this stuff. I don't watch Impact anymore, and never watch RAW - just read the internet recaps and maybe catch a replay if something cool happens. If you don't like it, maybe take a page out of my book and wait until things are better. Most of the wrestlers don't give a shit about winning or losing, so why should we?

"People" don't still like Joe. The auditorium full of TNA4Lifers that crowd out the Impact Zone still like him. Joe coulda been a bridge into a wider audience. Not if they carry on booking him in this fashion. And not, if new reports are to be believed, if the Lockdown ME is a WarGames-style match instead of a straight Joe/Christian rematch.

And TNA's business decisions seem to amount to "book the guys that get paid the most to win". When those guys are ALL ex-WWEers, that sends a terrible message, and does nothing to differentiate them from their "rivals".

What's Ken Shamrock up to these days? (apart from recovering from the Ortiz fights). I know he's said in interviews in the past that he would love to come back to wrestling sometime.

I think TNA should bring him in- he could do some interesting 'fake legit' stuff with Joe and/or Angle.
