Kudos to Forest Whitaker and Martin Scorese. Both well deserving, and their speeches were very very good. You knew once Lucas/Spielberg/Coppola came out to award director, that he had to be the guy.

I didn't care for the Oscars this year, but seeing those 2 win made it worthwhile.

And Ellen did a great job, maybe not as good as Stewart last year, but she didn't disappoint.

I'm pissed for Guillermo del Toro. It was wonderful to see his colleagues get rewarded for their work on the best film I've seen in over a decade, but for Guillermo to get shut out himself (by losing both Foreign Language Film and Original Screenplay) is a travesty and a crime.

That's my only complaint about the awards this year, but boy, it's a big one.

I don't disagree with you -- although not having seen the other Foreign Nominees (and Lives of Others does look really good), I can't work up too much anger. (Also, I'm pretty sure you liked Pan more than I did.)

I can, however, continue to feel that Children of Men was totally robbed.

Prediction-wise, I got 13 out of 24 -- 54% and the worst I've done in years.

Wow, I can't believe the movie that I enjoyed the most actually won....that NEVER happens. The Academy finally erases a big black eye by giving Scorsese an award, and throws in Best Picture to boot. Long, long overdue.

It's hard to get mad about snubs on a night when Scorsese wins, but Children of Men got royally hosed for the cinematography award. Kevin O'Donnell (0-for-19) and Peter O'Toole can console each other at the after-parties. O'Toole now has the most losing nominations of any actor without winning an Oscar. Yay?

Foreign film was like a repeat of 2001 with Amelie and No Man's Land.....the one popular favourite against the equally critically acclaimed and more traditional and 'serious' film, though Pan's wasn't anywhere near as frothy as Amelie was. I'm witholding judgement until I actually see Lives of Others, but Pan's at least won a bunch of other awards.

Ellen was ok, but the comic highlight was easily Ferrell/Black/O'Reilly's song. They need to turn hosting duties over to the frat pack one year and let them go nuts. Gore's "announcement" with DiCaprio was pretty funny as well. Hopefully the Supreme Court doesn't take away his Oscar tomorrow.

I was a little disappointed that Will Smith didn't win best actor for "Pursuit of Happyness." I never EVER get emotional at the movies but that movie had me fighting back the tears. That being said, Whitaker was a more than suitable winner. Good for him! It was pretty cool to see Leo DiCaprio get a shout out from the "Departed" producer. I've really grown to like him.

I missed most of the show. Can somebody summarize what the deal was with Gore and DiCaprio?

Wow. You're the first person to say those words considering the competition Will was up against. Actually, I saw all five movies and he was be far the least worthy of the Oscar. Whitaker was outstanding as was O'Toole. And DiCaprio was DiCaprio. I think the problem for DiCaprio ever winning is he makes it look so easy. I used to think Ed Norton was the best actor under 40. No more. The crown goes to Leo. And I actually really like Gossling in Half Nelson. I do think Will Smith was good, but fifth best this year.

I agree with your "DiCaprio was DiCaprio" assessment. I loved him in that movie too. I felt O'Toole was a little too creepy in his role and made me uncomfortable in watching, but maybe that was the point. Also, I'm a huge Will Smith mark, so maybe that explains that bias.

Gore and Leo came out to say how this was the first 'green' Oscars and how Hollywood was responding to environmental concerns. Leo kept asking Gore if there was 'anything else' he's like to announce, and finally Gore says that he hadn't planned on doing this, but people kept prodding him and encouraging him, and thus he wanted to announce that....and then the orchestra cued up and played him off. Cute.

I missed it when Jennifer Hudson won for Supporting Actress... Did they give us a reaction shot of Beyonce getting totally pissed off or did she start crying?

I think Beyonce looked happy enough when Jennifer won. On the other hand, she sat stock still and clearly did NOT applaud when Alan Arkin beat Eddie Murphy.

Yes, like a petulant child. As if it REALLY matters who wins any of the big categories. I had a difficult time recalling who won last year's big awards, and I actually work in the industry. If you're going to sit in the first few rows and be on TV quite often, then people like Beyonce need to take a page out of Jack Nicholson's book and clap, smile, and laugh at all the right times.
