Five-time All-Star Dennis Johnson, who won two titles with the Celtics and one with the Sonics (when he won the NBA Finals MVP award), passed away today at the age of 52 after collapsing at the practice of the D-League team he coached, the Austin Toros.

He was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived, and they tried to resuscitate him for 23 minutes before he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

My condolences to his family, to everyone who knew him, and to the Toros, Celtics and Sonics families.

When you look up highway robbery in the dictionary, it should lead off with Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson. Trade got the Green banners #15 and 16. The man who neutralized the Boston Strangler Andrew Toney and would throw a few beautiful back-door passes to Bird for a lay-up most nights. DJ will definitely be missed. I'd still love to see a mythical round-robin tournament between the '83 Sixers, '86 Celtics and the '87 Lakers to find out which team was the best of the 80's, as that would have been some match-up.

DJ was a joy to watch. He wanted to win as badly as anyone I ever watched play. He was a terrific competitor and he fit into those Boston teams, so easily meshing with Bird et al.

Unfortunately, I was not old enough when the Sonics won in 1979 but there was a really nice ceremony for him at KeyArena as well as the retirement of Spencer Haywood's #24. Too bad that may be the last number retired in Seattle...
