or, Slaughterhouse Desmond

I thought this was the best episode of the season. Cusick has taken the S1 Locke and S2 Eko role as the most mysterious of the islanders, and is totally hitting it out of the park. I'm fascinated to see how his power develops in the future, and exactly where the show is going with this. Part of me thinks it'll develop into a helpful deus ex machina for the writers, but it's a cool idea for a character. I almost sort of wish that they had given the power to someone else whose backstory is a bit exhausted (i.e. Sayid), since Desmond's backstory is as interesting as anyone's.

One downside: while it was nice to get a break from Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Others, it seems like the whole idea of a LOST ensemble is gone, since we still haven't had an episode that has featured everyone in semi-equitable doses. Sayid, Hurley and Claire have basically been non-entities this season, Charlie was the same until a bigger role in this episode, Locke and Jin/Sun have had nothing outside of their featured episodes, and Paolo/Nikki are still total nobodies. And next week won't help, since it's going to be a Jack flashback episode. Get these people on the same beach, writers!

I'll see your "best episode of the season" declaration and raise you a "my favorite episode of the entire series." Seriously, I'm being a little cautious about that sort of statement, but I was absolutely captivated the whole time.

Some of it was due to the different structure of the episode. Mostly backstory with some flashing forward instead of mostly present story with some flashbacks as usual. Is this the first episode of the series to not follow that formula?

Some of it was due to (gasp!) LOST actually answering some big questions. Is Desmond a precog? Is he a time traveler? Is he manipulating the future? It was pretty sweet to get some insight on that. Poor Desmond, this is way worse than what Bill Murray's character had to endure in Groundhog Day.

Also, Desmond's declaration that Charlie has to die was a pretty cool way to end the episode. With just about any other show on TV, I would just ignore that line, but the LOST writers have shown they won't hesitate to kill off a main character.

Love it, love it, love it! How'd I go this long without LOST?

Great episode, I really liked the way they broke up the standard formula of the show. Desmond just became a much more compelling character. The "how will Charlie die thread" will be interesting to see unfold.

Put me in the camp that would like a break from Jack. It looks like next weeks episode will center on him again. I'de rather see what happens in the camp when Sawer and Kate return and how the new information they have on the others affect the camp.

I guess I'll just have to wait.

I really had the idea that they'd do something more with the non-Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Others, as I've been jonesing for some Hurley and Sayid. That said, I agree with Big Bad on this being the best episode of the season (although my personal series-faves are both of the Hurley flashbacks). The saving Charlie swerve was wicked cool, and Charles Widmore has been, if he wasn't already, firmly entrenched as a totally dickish heel. StingArmy, I think this was the first episode, certainly the only one that comes to mind, that didn't go back and forth between the island and the flashback...not in the normal way, I mean. The whole thing with the jewelry store lady was interesting, but myself, I'd like to know who/what the heck she was...

Was absolutely glued to this episode. I watched it while working out this AM and I burned more calories and went further than I had in long time. The best thing that could come out of this could be that after Charlie does die, maybe Kate will stop dating him in real life. But back to the show....

Penny's father is a stone cold asshole. There was absolutely no reason for him to show up Desmond in the manner that he did but then Desmond wouldn't be who he is without him. Love the "universe corrects itself" theory. Did he go back ? Did he jump ahead ? Were the blodd splatters on his face after the implosion in the same pattern & place as the paint from the opening flashback scene ? And why didn't I remember how good looking Penny was ? (Edit: And in yet another nod to the Wizard of Oz -balloon/Henry Gale - Desmond "travels" to another place and time due to a knock on the head just like Dorothy did)

Hurley was relatively wasted in this episode but at least he got a little more screen time than Locke & Sayid did. No Nikki/Paulo is always a good thing. Sun starting to get maternal with the brief glimpse of her holding Aaron.

and Claire got a haircut - she has bangs now. I wonder why the writers did that ? ;-)

I just hope Desmond's premonition is true, and Charlie does get offed. He had really started getting on my nerves the last few seasons. And he is probably the least cool "rock star" I have ever seen. He was a hobbit for crying out loud!

My wife got a great laugh as Desmond was strangling Charlie. "Dude!"

Again, my wife asked, "Who cut her hair?" Only thing I could figure is that someone had found scissors somewhere.

It was fun watching the replay from last week, as we had missed it last week. I had already watched it online, so I really enjoyed watching her reaction at the bus. This week was a fantastic episode, and I look forward to a very spooked Charlie and to see how the universe ultimately adjusts itself. ;)

It was a different actress. The creators claim that they hadn't cast the right Penelope when she first appeared.

I liked this episode a lot. It makes me sad that Eko is dead, because he and Desmond would have had some good moments.

I am wondering whether what we see is what we think we see. I mean wouldn't you think Charlie would remember a wildeyed longhair talking about the button and the island? Is Desmond really redoing his life or did he just take a big shot to the head?

If he is redoing his life and he knew Charlie gets struck by lightening and then saves Charlie from being struck the second time around how does he know he will drown? Wouldn't that require a third pass through?

I could be wrong because this episode was pretty complex, but the way I understand it is like this. Desmond re-lived only parts of his life. Namely, he re-lived everything between moving in with Penny and breaking up with her. He described this to Charlie by saying that when he turned the fail-safe key, his life flashed before his eyes.

His premonitions of things about to happen on the island are different. He hasn't lived through those things YET. After the second pass through of his life finishes and he ends up on the island for the second time, he said the flashes continued, but instead of him seeing what he's gone through in his past, he's seeing what he's about to go through in the future.

Like I said, I could be wrong, but that's the way I understood it based on what he told Charlie at the end of the episode.

I personally would rather it had been Claire as the one who's days are numbered. Her character does absolutely nothing for me on that show.

The Penelope we first saw in the photo inside the hatch was a different actress, but as far as I know, the living person Penelope has always been the same.
And yeah, she's red, red hot.

EDIT: And she lended her voice talents to be a random pedestrian in GTA: Vice City, according to IMDB. That's...cool...

Claire is the one yet-unexplored asset of the original castaways, since they've only given her two flashbacks in two seasons (and one was an on-island flashback). Both she and Charlie have been stuck in something of a rut wrapped up in each other's storylines, so let's hope they each get more to do this season.

Or maybe...

With all the love this episode is getting for all of you, it makes me wonder how the episode is also the lowest rated episode of the series. It did like a 12.2 or something.

I was drooling over this episode.
VERY interesting theories of what takes/took place.
Totally put things back in the 'paranormal' realm instead of 'it was all done by some weird group of scientists'
The episode gave me the same vibe as the Hurley in the asylum one. Is it all in someone's head?

The time travel thing reminded me of the way the writer Michael Moorcock (and probably many others) deal with time travel..
It is basically impossible since you will always affect things.
Therefor, time will kick you out and heal itself.
So..yeah..Desmond DID travel back in time when he was knocked out, but time threw him back when it was obvious he was trying to change things this time around.
Like his meeting with Charlie. Maybe he did see him on the street the first time around but he didn't think about it.
This time he had already met him and thus he approached him.
Time doesn't like that so poooof..back to the island you go.

So I do believe that he might have knowledge of things to come. I doubt they relate to Charlie only..
But ofcourse he doesn't know what is going to happen until he has the deja vu moment just a few seconds prior.

In some of his books, Moorcock calls this 'Morphail Effect' - the tendency for time to heal itself by rejecting time travelers who journey to the past, and flinging them forward to their point of origin, or beyond

Very cool. Thanks for the Moorcock explanation. I've always heard his books are great.
As far as the ratings go, many are speculating that it's the timeslot change. Moving Lost to 10 to avoid competing with American Idol might have been a bad idea. Maybe a lot of casual Lost viewers go to bed at 10? Who knows.

I have to get up 4am so staying up until 11pm to watch LOST just isn't happening - it is watch it on tape or watch it online now.

Agreed. Watching TV is something I do not want to be doing at 10-11pm. Much less a show I want to pay attention to.
The good side of the later time is that the producers have said that this will allow for content of a bit more of a "mature" nature.
