Next paycheck I wil be getting one of these two systems. However, I can't decide which one to get because they both have games I like and have advantages the other doesn't.

I was leaning towards The GameCube (cheaper), and first party games like Zelda. Plus, I've always liked Nintendo.

But then I decided that the costlier PS2 would be my best choice because as a HUGE Squaresoft fan, I need my Final Fantasy and Chrono Break (sequal to Chrono Trigger/Cross). That and such games like Meteal Gear Solid 2.

BUT THEN Square and Nintendo decide to get back together and start making games, meaning some of those Squaresoft games could be going Cube-side.

Either way I'll be happy. But your suggestions would help greatly.

(Please bear in mind that I do not have a DVD Player, but do have a PSone).

I would get a PS2, especially if you don't have a DVD player and don't necessarily plan to get one soon.

If you're going to get a Cube, I'd wait a little while longer. Nintendo is denying they're going to drop the price to $149, but most experts think they will by the fall.

I'd agree with that. I don't have a GameCube, and Nintendo always puts out good games with its big name characters, so I'm sure the Cube does and will have its good points. But I've enjoyed my PS2, and it's served as a decent DVD player for me (only one I have, too) and you can still play just about all of your Playstation games on the PS2.

Not considering the X-Box? I currently have no interest in one, either, but I'm just curious.

you could buy the PS2 now, and buy the gamecube later (when it drops in price more, and zelda and metriod and stuff is out).

just look at what games is out now, which ones are unique to each system, and if you want to play those games. And which games aren't coming out for the other system.

I plan to buy a gamecube before buying a ps2, but that's just me.

I have to agree with everybody else. The PS2 is the overall bargain right now. I picked up the GameCube when it came out because it was cheaper and I liked the opening Titles. now PS2 is on the level with GC for price and has some great games as well. But if the price does drop of GC in the fall (along with the release of Metroid, Zelda, and Jedi Knight 2) it will be worth getting the GC.

I hate to disagree with Mark Coale, but the Gamecube is already $149.

If you're buying right now, it's PS2 all the way.

The PS2 isn't a fabulous DVD player (it's adequate), but it's got a huge game library with a bunch of exclusives that are system-sellers. Hell, just get GTA3 and you'll be busy for the next month or so.

Most people who buy a GameCube do so because they know that the franchise titles (Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, Starfox, etc.) are coming to it and it alone. Well, they're coming -- but they're not here yet, nor do most of them have a confirmed US ship date yet. If you're looking for those franchises, think Super Mario Sunshine in August, Starfox around October, Metroid projected for the Christmas season, with all dates subject to change. Doesn't sound like much of a bumper summer crop, does it?

As for Square, don't get too ambitious just yet. What's really happening (so far) is that Nintendo's financing software development by a newly-created Square affiliate, not porting over FFx games lock, stock and barrel. A Final Fantasy game is under development for GC and GBA, but it'll likely be based on the Final Fantasy Unlimited anime, which is a slightly different breed of cat than the FF games you're familiar with. In any case, don't expect the first game (GBA or GC) to reach the US by end-of-year.

That's not to say that there aren't good games for the GameCube right now; there definitely are. What I'm saying is that if you're buying a GC now, you'd better be happy with what's available for it now, because that's what you'll be playing for quite some time.

As for the Xbox, I'm not impressed with it now, and don't expect the summer to change my mind. Halo's still the primary reason to own it; take out that and the cross-platform games (EA Sports, Tony Hawk, etc.) also available on PS2, and there's not much else there, IMHO.

PS2 games I want;

Final Fantasy X
Metal Gear Solid 2
GT3 A-Spec
*Other Final Fantasy Games
*Chrono Break

(I've alreayd played State of Emergency and GTA3 too much via a friend's machiene....yes, it is possible to play them too much =)

GameCube

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Rogue Leader
Smash Bros.
*Mario
*Metriod Prime
*Zelda
*PStar Online

By looking at the games right now (and to come, which is denoted with the *) The Cube should win out. But the thing is, I really like Squaresoft (the Chrono Series is my favorite series ever), and if those titles are on the PS2....well, yea, thats that.

I have a Cube and I wish I'd gotten a PS2 and waited for the Nintendo franchise titles.

I might HAVE to get an X Box for the exclusive levels on games like the Matrix, Spider-Man, and TH4.

I will also get a PS2, if only for the SD series and old school stuff like Harvest Moon and Monster Rancher.

So I say...
PS2 for now, Gamcube this fall, and X Box if you're a completetist freak like me.

I thank you all for your help on this matter, and the issue has been solved. My friend who is coming back here in the fall has a PS2, so I can still enjoy it somewhat. FOr now though, I am going to enjoy my Sonic Adventure 2 Battle =)

Isn't Spider-Man on all consoles? I was looking at getting it for the GameCube this past weekend.

He was talking about the exclusive levels for Xbox. In Spider-Man you get two extra levels involving Kraven The Hunter. Not really that exciting, though X-Box does look a bit better than the Gamecube version. Anyway, unless you'll be satisfied with only three games don't get the Xbox. All the Xbox has that are worth owning are Halo, Fusion Frenzy, and Hunter: The Reckoning. Everything else is multi-platform, even my beloved Burnout (finally a game that allows me to drive a car the way I drive MY car) is multi platform.

I've been impressed with the PS2 since getting it a couple of months ago. Final Fantasy X was fun, but I couldn't really get into it. GTA3 has been unbelievably addicitive. It totally reminded me of why I enjoyed playing games as a kid in the first place.

I used to be a huge Nintendo loyalist, because their games seemed to be of higher quality, but I switched to the Playstation after Final Fantasy VII hit the shelves. Squaresoft DOES, in fact, rule.

Some of the GameCube stuff looks like it might be fun for nostalgia value, but it certainly seems like it's aimed at more younger players. That said, some of the Xbox and PS2 titles have such steep learning curves now, that they're hard to get into. Or maybe I'm just turning into an old fart. :)

PS2 is, without a doubt, the best console right now. It has the best games and it plays DVDs and PSX games. While you may not have a use for the latter two, it's still nice to have. I also hear it plays when turned sideways and that it can communicate with the dead.

GameCube is also a great for the price. It's #2, but it has many redeeming qualities. It has the franchise titles coming out and it also has Rogue Squadron, which is a beautiful Star Wars game despite the lack of difficulty settings. Yes, the games are more geared towards kids, but the games still remain fun. Although, I'd really like a game like MGS to come out for GC one of these days. It's got all of the favorites, though. Especially if you're into nostalgia. Although, nostalgia doesn't stop Mario and Link titles from routinely kicking ass. They also have some of the other great non-exclusive PS2 titles like Spider-Man: The Movie.

I'd buy a Dreamcast over XBox

Metriod Prime, Rogue Leader, Sonic Adv 2 Battle, Wrestlemania X8, Bomberman Generations, F-Zero, and the Resident Evil don't seem like kidding games to me, astroid boy. And you think games like Monkey Ball and Smash Bros. don't appeal to all ages?

I must say thanks though. I'm glad I'm not the only one around here who thinks that Square DOES indeed own. The thing that tossed me over to the GameCube was the First Party Developed games. I've seen the previews, saw the screens. By the looks of it, Nintendo's big guns are going to be worth the hype.

The lack of RPG's on the GameCube is a little bit disturbing, but the cure for that is simple. Square is back. SKIES OF ARCADIA IS COMING TO THE GAMECUBE. And finally, I have a Gameboy Advance, which has many topnotch/quality RPG's (Golden Sun 1 and 2, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, the GBC Dragon Warriors) and many grat RPG's coming out (Zelda Advance, Old school SQUARE RPG's?).

Of course, Sonic Team + Miyamoto = GOLD.

Dream Cast > Ex-Box. No doubt =)
