So did the Patriots win or did the Chargers just make about three too many mistakes?

This game started out pretty slow and I fell asleep, so... my loss. I'd go back and watch what I missed but IT'S 24 NIGHT!

The dream Super Bowl of Brees vs. San Diego dies... right now!

Our conference Championships are set - New Orleans heads to Chicago for the afternoon opener, and New England visits Indianapolis in prime time.

I think it's time for Marty to call it a career. Seriously, isn't 15 years of futility a sign that a Super Bowl just isn't meant to be?

Marty is jinxed. Fumbled punt. Idiotic personal foul wiping out a potential 4th and long on the edge of field goal range. The interception/fumble on 4th down, where an incompletion would have given the Chargers the ball, and with better field position than they would have had on the pick anyway. I saw Lawrence Taylor play. Shawn Merriman is not Lawrence Taylor.
If you are going to beat the Patriots in the playoffs, you can't screw around and let Brady hang around. The touchdown at the end of the 1st half changed the complexion of the game entirely. I really believe the Patriots won the Super Bowl the night the 49ers knocked out the Broncos, the only team that has proven to have the number of Brady/Belichick. CBS executives must be dancing around though with a marquee match-up in the AFC Title Game, and a marquee Super Bowl. Only teams they probably wanted no place near the Super Bowl were the Ravens and Seahawks. Now they either get the Saints Story or the Chicago market from the NFC and either the Patriots trying to tie the Steelers 4 in 6 years or the Colts trying to demonstrate that the Manning family isn't a complete bunch of losers.

This loss hurts me more than any game not involving the Packers.

Beyond any fantasy football ramifications (of which there were some), I just wanted to see New England lose. After this game, I think I may add New England to the list of teams to root against no matter the circumstances (heretofore consisting of the New York Yankees and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish). I would root against those teams if playing against the Devil's Team, "Devil Went Down To Georgia" style.

Now we're going to hear nothing about New England vs. Indianapolis talk all week (including Manning vs. Brady, New England Defense vs. Manning, Belicheck vs. Dungy, and who knows what else). I will be rooting for New Orleans and Indianapolis. If they both make it, I'll be happy for either team.

Bill Simmons said last week's Dallas/Seattle game was at Stomach Punch level. This one has to be at least Guillotine level.

Jesus, why won't Tom Brady just die?! I hate that man.

I was all set for a final four of teams I really liked, and then the Pats got in. Boo.

Though we have several potential great Superbowl matchups now. I really want Indy to get there cause I'm one of the few who actually likes Manning and hopes he doesn't have to live with the Marino II stigma all his life. Him against anyone would be fun to watch in the Superbowl.

Then again, a rematch of the first Superbowl I ever cared about....85. Bears vs. Patriots. I could really get into that, provided it has a similar outcome to the first go 'round.

And then we have the Saints perhaps finally getting that Superbowl win. Yeah, lots of great potential provided the Pats don't win.

Waaaaaah! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah! *sniff* Waaaaaah!

I hope Drayton Florence feels like an idiot. That personal foul might have been the single biggest play that hurt the Chargers, since it put the Pats right there for an easy FG when it would've been at least another 50-yarder without the penalty.

I'm just super-happy that I don't have to look forward to the world ending next Sunday, since we don't have a Schottenheimer-Dungy winner-goes-to-XLI matchup. I think that would've ended it.

Nope - bad coaching sets players up to have idiotic personal fouls after plays are dead, or to not know enough to knock down sure thing interceptions on 4th down (unless you have a clear straight shot for the end zone), or to not challenge a play (said interception/fumble) that you have no chance in hell of getting overturned, thus losing a time out that just might [heavy sarcasm] have come in handy later in the game.

What JayJayDean said.
In addition:

WOOOOOOOO!!!

I haven't felt this much emotion during and after a game in a long time.
It's after 10 and I've still got my Patriots "buzz".

The sad thing is- tomorrow morning there will be more calls to the sports talk radio here in New England about the Red Sox than the Patriots. Not from me.

Thank you Troy Brown. Bingo, indeed.

When the Colts won yesterday via five field goals, I had a sick feeling the Patriots were going to win today, setting up the Vinatieri vs. his former team matchup next week.

I didn't think either team played particularly well today, but NE put it together when it counted.

The worst part of today's result is that I have to take my girlfriend out for dinner at a restaurant of her choice.

I'm fully expecting to click on ESPN.com tomorrow & read that Marty got axed ...

And what was up with LT getting bent out of shape at the end? The Punktriots must've really set him off.

Looks like I'll be pulling for the NFC this year.

Maybe SD and Baltimore can trade coaches.

LT can shut up. If the Patriots want to mock Merriman by doing his dumb-ass dance at midfield after a win, they can go ahead. I'm just sorry they didn't mime sticking a needle in their ass.

L.T. was upset that some of the Pats players were celebrating by doing Merriman's dance on top of the Charger logo.

Well, I don't know what you found on ESPN.com on Monday, but I clicked on ESPN.com today (sports.espn.go.com) and read that Marty's sticking around, which is a good decision by the Chargers brass. They would have been doing both him and themselves a great disservice if they had cut him loose after that horribly unfortunate set of events on Sunday.
