We have a payphone outside because if you're going to let people buy gasoline (with a credit card) all night, you need to have a way for them to call 911 if there is an emergency. Anyway, it usually goes about 3 days before someone breaks it. 2 or 3 times, people have inserted pennies with sponges folded around them. I guess the idea is that the sponge makes the penny seem like it's a quarter or something? The problem is that once it gets past the opening, the sponge unfolds and immediately clogs up the money slot. Frankly we don't care because we don't make any money off the phone and we only need it in case of those emergency calls.

To make a long story short, yeah cell phones are definitely a big part of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if another part of it is that people suck.

I've seen quite a few here converted into/replaced with ATMs. Which is nice in theory, but they always charge for transactions and tend to be in the perfect position to lure drunk people into getting that extra tenner out for a kebab.
