I thought the Batista/HHH match was very good. The finishing sequence definitely was, from Batista hulking up and beating the piss out of Triple H, to Triple H's cocky look as he had Batista hooked into the Pedigree and then being terrified as his fingers stopped interlocking and Batista forced his way out and into a spinebuster. (The Warrior-ropes was probably too much, but it's Wrestlemania and you're going to win the title, you can be excited.)

Loved how they used Peter Gabriel's "BIG TIME" to sell WM 22. I still think WrestleMania every time I hear that song now.

Which is too bad for this guy.

Complete opposite here. The song was 20 years old when they used it and it really hasn't aged well. It sounded dated and stale, and clichéd to boot.

"We need a song that will really give this event a big-time feel."
"Wait - say that again..."

They may as well have used Born To Be Wild or Bad To The Bone or We Will Rock You.

WrestleMania 22
2006
Rosemont, IL

Rey Mysterio won the World Heavyweight Championship at the Grandest Stage of Them All, after winning the 2006 Royal Rumble as the #2 entrant-- last eliminating Triple H and Randy Orton, of all people.

Orton, however, baited Mysterio by telling him that the late Eddie Guerrero wasn't looking down on him from Heaven-- he was down in Hell-- in a terrible exploitation storyline that got the 2006 Gooker Award on WrestleCrap, and was different from most inductions in that no soundbites or pictures were used. Instead of being somewhat-funny like most previous inductions, it was tasteless in the extreme, and quite frankly I hope The Idiot In The Back Writing This Crap got fired.

After putting the #1 contendership on the line-- and losing it-- to Randy Orton at No Way Out, GM Theodore Long stepped in and made it a triple-threat match, also involving champion Kurt Angle.

Mysterio pinned Orton for the title, marking the third time by my count that Kurt Angle lost a title at WrestleMania without getting pinned. Mysterio went on to lose to just about everyone on the SmackDown roster (except JBL, who inexplicably couldn't beat him) until finally dropping the title to King Booker. (Oh, and to add insult to injury, they removed the 'heavyweight' from the title's name for the duration of his reign. Mysterio was just called the World Champion).

This has been Kurt Angle's last appearance at a WrestleMania to date; he was released from his WWE contract on August 25 due to health reasons and then, within a month's time, he'd signed with TNA.

On the other hand, the main event WWE Championship match between champion John Cena and Triple H was free of the kind of brain-injuring storyline that the triple-threat match was. It was just a good match between two guys that brought it in the ring. Cena got a mixed reaction, to put it mildly-- a lot of people were rooting for Triple H to beat him-- but in the end, Cena locked in the STFU and got the submission. Triple H lost at WrestleMania for the third straight year, two of those by tapping out, leading to a joke that I had with myself.

Q: What's the worst night of Triple H's life?
A: The night after WrestleMania.

Shawn Michaels beat the ever-loving hell out of Vince McMahon, most notably hitting him with a flying elbow drop off the top of a ladder. In a sign of things to come, both Michaels and Triple H gave the D-X crotch chop during their respective matches.

Perhaps the most memorable match of the night was a hardcore match between Edge and Mick Foley, in which the Rated-R Superstar hit the Spear on Foley while he was on the ring ropes, sending him through a flaming table on the outside.

Rob Van Dam won the second annual Money in the Bank ladder match over Shelton Benjamin, Ric Flair, Finlay, Bobby Lashley and Matt Hardy. Both Finlay and Lashley were making their WrestleMania debuts.

Rob Van Dam would go on to challenge John Cena to put the WWE Championship up against him at ECW One Night Stand on June 11. To say RVD had a partisan crowd in that contest would be putting it mildly-- the "IF CENA WINS, WE RIOT" sign will never be forgotten, and it was probably accurate, too.

Joey Styles: John Cena usually gets a mixed reaction wherever he goes. Here, it's mixed between people giving him the finger and people actually using the "F" word.

John "Bradshaw" Layfield defeated Chris Benoit for the U.S. Title while Kane and The Big Show retained the World Tag Team Title against Carlito and Chris Masters.

And The Undertaker improved to 14-0 by defeating Mark Henry in a Casket Match. Yeah, if Ric Flair, Kane and Randy Orton couldn't do it in recent years, Mark Henry had pretty much no chance in hell.

I 100% agree. I hadn't heard the song in ages, but it clicked immediately with me when I heard them using it to hype WM22. I can actually picture the whole highlight package at the end of WM22 (which has actually grown into one of my favorite WMs) whenever I hear it on Sirius XM now.

EDIT: Eke, you totally forgot to mention the best Women's WM match ever, with psycho Mickie James beating Trish Stratus shortly after doing one heck of an R-rated manuever.

Nope, that last, mostly-cropped line is the first (of certainly many) stylesheet references. Which, while cool, I'm still convinced, has precedence rules made up by orange-rumped agoutis with keyboards. (Well, or maybe I've just never gleaned any bit of sense from it. Could be that.) "Important" is the CSS programmer's equivalent of "goto".

Can't really tell what all's in the box to the left, but the set on the right is damn bizarrely eclectic! Got the dessert liqueurs mixed up with the apertifs, with the digestifs, & one I don't think anybody drinks on it's own! Is it a scary thing that I currently own bottles of 5 of the 7 in that batch? (I find a little bit of bitters goes a long way.)

Cool. That'll give Franzen and Zetterberg some more rest before the Wings face the Canucks in the conference finals.
