(Other than those belonging to the Lords Stanley and Grey of course).

The excitement is running rife throughout the (real) football-playing world -- the World Cup kicks off in less than a week. So stock the fridge with lager, dust off the old cleats and shinpads, and call the boss to say you won't be in for the month of June!

Group A - France and Uruguay (it is the hot rainy season in Japan/Korea ... the South American teams should thrive in that climate) will make it through to the second round.

Group B - Spain and Paraguay

Group C - Brazil and Turkey

Group D - USA and Portugal

Group E - Germany and Cameroon

The GROUP OF DEATH~ - Argentina and Nigeria. Sorry English fans, but your midfield is in disarray. Beckham's hobbled, half of your other midfielders out with injuries, and your manager inexplicably looks right through Steve McManaman. You and your hooligans will be heading home mighty early.

The OTHER GROUP OF DEATH~ - Italy will make it. But between Mexico, Croatia and a really good Equador side, I have no idea who will join them in the second round. These games will be highly entertaining.

Group H - Belgium and Japan, just 'cause host countries traditionally do well and this is a weak group.

Eventual winner - No fucking clue. France could repeat, but Barthez has looked vulnerable for two whole years tending net at Man U. Argentina is popular, Italy and Germany are always there, and Brazil is the most talented side in the world, if they can put aside their half-assing ways. Teams like Portugal, Spain, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Croatia aren't that far behind the top teams and wouldn't be that much of an upset if they got on a roll and won it all.

It's going to be a great Cup this year, although injuries are happening all over the place.

My picks to make it through:

A-France, Uruguay(your logic makes sense, Gavintzu)
B-Spain, Paraguay
C-Brazil, and the surprising Costa Rica
D-Portugal, Poland
E-I was really leaning towards Ireland until this whole Roy Keane mess came up. But Germany just isn't the Germany of lore. Cameroon, Ireland. What the hell-there needs to be an upset somewhere.
F-Argentina, England(I can't pick against my team, no matter what!)
G-Italy, Croatia
H-Japan, Russia. Belgium just isn't what it used to be, either. And they've had some injuries as well.

Eventual winner-Argentina, Italy or France. I live in a strong Italian neighbourhood, so I'll be staring at the Red/White/Green for the month of June. I am still pissed off that The Netherlands didn't qualify.

...not to mention the horn-honking that will be happening way too early in the morning.

They had a great segment on the Kornheiser show on Friday with the coach of DC United (brit) and one of the ESPN futbol commentators (irish) talking about the Keane thing.

They were hilarious.

You know, I don't really care who wins, just that nothing screwy happens.

I wondered why they had those guys on. I came in on the middle of the segment and thought it was a gag! It doesn't seem like a Mr. Tony thing.

I think the intern kid who was in the studio this week (the one that couldn't find Hershey Kisses for Mr. Tony) suggested it.

Tony was so impressed with the Irish guy that he invited him to come back on the show during the World Cup.

Heard today that Zidane is hurt for at least the first two games, and maybe the whole tournament. Gotta put a huge dent in France's chances.

What's outstanding is the amount of coverage in English and Irish media about the whole Keane fiasco. It seems like he had some legitimate issues with the Irish training facilities, but calling your manager an "English cunt" may not be the best way to find a resolution.

What's really going to suck in the World Cup this year is the time difference, with a lot of the games happening whilst we sleep. There's more than a few mornings I'll be setting the alarm early and heading into work bleary-eyed. I think all the games are covered in Canada between TSN and CBC.
