Alright, saw the movie tonight here in Houston. I'm still processing some of it. But I think Craig was a fantastic Bond, and I think the haters who really aren't even Bond fans and just a bunch of whiney housewives obsessed with Brosnan need to get over it. This story is not a Brosnan Bond story, it required a new Bond.
I liked seeing a return to live stunts instead of blue screen CGI shit from the last few movies. The action is very well done for the most part, and I don't think they over-edit it like say . . . the shit that's called The Marine.

One sort of action sequence I think should've been cut entirely is when Bond is poisoned during a card game and has to go to his car to mess with some doohickeys or he dies. It could've been totally cut from the movie and they would've lost nothing for it. |
Also, about *THAT* scene:

No, they needed that because....

It proves that Vesper really did have feelings for him, which validates Bond's feelings for her at the end. James was supposed to die so that Le Chiffre could walk away with the rest of the game and the money to cover "The Organization's" investment in him. When she screwed that up and Bond survived and won, The Organization had to keep Bond alive and around long enough to get the code and the money from him.
What they DIDN'T need was that extended Retired Bond scene there in the third Act. It really broke up the pacing of the movie. If they'd gone straight from sex at the hospital to him quitting to her doublecrossing him, then ok, but that felt like forever to develop. Also the scene of them in the shower could have done without him licking her fingers. That was just creepy. |
Other than that though, I really enjoyed it. Craig isn't nearly as suave as Brosnan, but that's really the point. Without the special effects and things, it felt much more real and gritty, which is exactly what the series needs. I'm going to miss Q and the goofy gadgets, but I like the new direction. I'm not sure I'm a fan of Bond waffling as much as he does in this movie, but at least he's not completely bullet proof or anything. The only qualm I had about that was

that Bond wasn't the one that solved the "second act mystery" with Le Chiffre, instead with the Organization offing him, and then Bond offing them. It felt like kind of a bait and switch there, but the plot kind of relied on that, so I can't complain too much. Also, where was the CIA? I thought they were going to bring in Le Chiffre, was that a set-up too? |
Anyway, pretty good overall.

You don't need the poison scene to prove that Vesper cares about him. It's proven by her bargaining for his life and her genuine sorrow during the climax and basic suicide |

To me, Connery was the "Man". Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that anyone could be a better Bond, until now... Daniel Craig is now the "Man"... I loved this movie! Loved the stripped down approach... I think that they have re-booted the franchise... It has a more realistic gritty feel to it... Loved the cast... Loved the story...Loved him! | General Zod

In all honesty, I'm ashamed to have been so against Daniel Craig from the beginning. He really did 'look' the part as described in the novels. (...except for the blond hair, which grew on me as the film went along.) This really was quite good and I feel like I should be eating a hat or a dead bird or something because I had zero faith in the film and I thought it'd be crap and it wasn't.
I even enjoyed the 'yoda fight' chase scene which supposedly used very little cgi effects, which is shocking.
The only downer was the pre-credits super stunt filled action scene which wasn't there, but if this is indeed a 'reboot' of the franchise, then I can live with that.

Shit, I knew I forgot something. I always liked how they'd have "James Bond WIll return in..." at the end of the credits and I totally forgot to stay for that.

Has anyone found a (legal) version of the theme music for this movie? ITunes has an entry, but it's some alternative-music version by Chris Cornell... not the high-energy, blow-your-ass-out-of-the-seat-and-three-rows-back version with strings, horns, and full orchestra backing the band. I am clueless as to why such version was not released commercially, as it's a great track and would make a killing (no pun intended). | skorpio17

It had action and the 2 chase scenes were good, but the last 40 minutes were weak. Q's gadgets were missing. It could've used one big heel with a superpower, not a bunch of regular guys. Bond didn't seem like he was having fun. | StaggerLee

That's the exact reason I LOVED this movie, its far more realistic than the previous few movies. A Hotel made of ice? A bad guy with diamonds in his face? Please. This at least made it seem like it was plausible. | General Zod

| #18 Posted on 29.12.06 1200.07 Reposted on: 29.12.13 1200.08 | That's true, as long as you don't adjust for inflation. The average movie ticket price has increased 13% since even Die Another Day came out.
Adjusted for inflation, based on domestic box office only, the best selling movie was Thunderball. Casino Royale would have to pass $400 million domestically to pass it.
Looking at worldwide box office (which only exists for Moonraker, and then the movies since 1989), and assuming worldwide prices have increased at the same rate as US prices (which may very well not be true), then it needs to reach $550 million worldwide (which is doable, it's already at $453 million) to pass Moonraker at the tops. | skorpio17

| #19 Posted on 29.12.06 1846.14 Reposted on: 29.12.13 1847.42 | It was most similar to Die Another Day with the 24ish plot twists, rogue agent, torture, bitchy boss, etc. I still liked the Ice Castle, cars shooting missles, and the other movie.
My father's main gripe with Casino Royale aside from confusing and overlong was that watching a poker game is boring and to suggest the fate of the world depends on a poker game is absurd. On the other hand, I enjoy watching poker on TV.
My main complaint is that it was too "realistic." I'd prefer any other Bond, even one of Dr. Bashir's holodeck programs. I'd even prefer the Brosnan playing Bond in a non-Bond movie, like the Sunset one or the newer one which I didn't see and can't even remember the name of, but I believe is better.
And it's not that I'm too harsh on recent movies, because I loved Deja Vu and the Prestige - which even had they gone straight to DVD were better. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
