ESPN.com - MLB - Tigers deal three pitchers to Yankees for Sheffield
The Detroit Tigers have acquired Gary Sheffield from the New York Yankees for three righthanded pitching prospects, the Tigers announced Friday.
In return for Sheffield, the Tigers sent Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett to New York. Detroit agreed to a two-year contract extension with Sheffield through the 2009 season.
If Sheffield is on his best behavior, this is a decent pickup for the Tigers. At worst, though, this could be immensely disastrous, as Sheffield's a notorious locker room cancer. The Yankees were smart to pawn him off as soon as Sheff looked to be on the verge of a breakdown over having to play 1B.
I actually like this trade much better for the Yankees, as their pitching staff is among the oldest in baseball and acquiring some of the Tigers' young guns will keep the rotation fresh for quite a while.

He like playing for Leyland in Florida (97 World Champs), and got a 2 year extension, which is probably what he REALLY wanted... | Packman V2

I'm curious what Tigers fans think, as Sheff isn't exactly a guy who avoids injuries. And how well is he going to fit into that locker room? As talented as he might still be (which is questionable, given how he played after coming back), I just see him disrupting the team chemistry in Detroit. They were built mostly out of role players who all did their part for the greater good (like the late 90s Yankees). Sheff has always been out for himself first, which is understandable, but not really the kind of guy you want on your team. | Lexus
