The source for this is the New York Times, since Nintendo's press conferences aren't until later today. Anyway, the release date is 11/19, and the price will be $250. That's a bit more than rumour had it costing (I was expecting $229), but that is still nowhere near the price of the PS3. It will ship with one wii-mote and one nunchuck. What I think is clever of Nintendo is that additional wii-motes will cost $40, and additional nunchuck attachments will cost $20. So if you want more controllers, its effectively $60. Regardless, I am hyped, and I'm glad to have a date and price tag out now.

Well, I had hoped the price was going to be closer to $200, but all Nintendo ever promised was a price $250 or less, and they apparently will deliver on that. Hopefully, I'll be able to preorder one of these before they presell out.

It's never too early to watch for an Amazon listing (The W at Amazon)!

$250 is just a little steep for me to justify a purchase at launch. Maybe for Christmas, but if it's totally hard to find then, I can wait a few months.

As hyped as I am to get one, I want to see some real world testing and reviews before I take the leap.

If I get any new console, this will be the only one I can afford. And I probably wont get it since I'll be distracted with WoW for an undeterminable amount of time into the future

BUT

I have a vision that I'll get this, have fun playing SMB3, 007 Goldeneye and other games from the old school library for a few weeks... then realize Im missing out on games like MGS 4 and Assasin (yea even Halo 3) and feel pretty bad.

who knows how it will go down

I've had my Playstation Portable for awhile now (almost since launch), and I've only purchased 3 games since then, one of which I traded in for cash. The reason? Because I've spent practically all of my time playing homebrew emulators for old games that I really, really enjoyed back in the day (Streets of Rage 2, Tecmo Super Bowl, RBI Baseball, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart, etc. etc. etc. etc.). Graphics and fancy technology are great and all, but sometimes you just can't beat classic gameplay.

I'll pass. Nintendo has effectively shit in my ice cream today between the price of the console, the price of the emulated games, the price of an extra controller (!!) and the fact that they REMOVED the DVD playback.

Nice that they're throwing a freebie game in there, but I wouldn't expect Wii Sports to be much more than a tech demo...not good enough to sell seperately, but good enough to make people think they're getting something special as an extra.

The "channels" thing is nice, but it looks like it's just going to be the 360's blades with the weather report added.

When it gets to around 200 I'll probably pick one up. If nothing else, it'll let me play some GC games I missed out on, without having to pick up a GC.

I guess it's all about what your expectations were going into today. Personally Nintendo saying a long time ago the price would be below $250 told me the price would be $250 so that was no big shock. The price of the old games doesn't phase me either, maybe because I've been buying games on the 360 Marketplace for a while now and expected similar costs for Nintedo's stuff.

I didn't read about the removal of DVD functions, which is a little disappointing, but considering I was just going to hook it up to the same tv as my 360 it's not like I'll notice.

That one kinda makes sense. The Wii-mote is designed to store game content (stats, avatars, etc.) which will customize the controller to the user. Nintendo's thinking Wii owners are going to play with other Wii owners and will have their own controllers for multiplayer games.

They really should be sold together though. Are there any games where you use JUST the nunchuk?

So it's $250 for the console AND that whole package? I'm sold! It's definitely better considering it's less than half the price of a PS3 with NO games.

The price for a Wii-mote stings just a bit, though.

Any news on the cost to download classic games yet?

TO be honest, I like what Nintendo's offering, but I'm still going to hold out for a PS3.

$5 for NES games, $8 for SNES games, and $10 for N64 games.

Edit: Actually, that's 500 Wii points for NES games, 800 Wii points for SNES games, and 1000 Wii points for N64 games. Wii points are currency that can be purchased in cards of 2000 points for $20.

If you want a new system this year, you may not have too much of a choice. 400,000 PS3s are shipping. Several million Wiis are shipping. Many retailers are also going to be very hesitant about pre-orders as well after the 360 debacle of last year, so PS3s will be either hard to find for $600 (w/ no HD cables) or I'm guessing, north of $1500 online. PS3 also has no game.

Wii also will also have Opera web browsing and a photo album. I wasn't a huge fan of 64 or Gcube, but I'm imagining the Wii will take off like crazy. The only downside in my eyes is the release date...they really should have tried to beat PS3 to the punch and released late October to early November.

I was kinda thinking like that too, but now I'm not. See if they have all their ads in place and maybe demo system on the day of the PS3 release it'll get noticed. Parents will see that PS3 pricetag and be like, um no. Then a couple days later the Wii will come out and look like a damned bargin by comparison. I can see this being a smart move since when I talk to normal parents who don't follow this stuff they have no clue of how much the PS3 will cost yet.

There's only two days between the PS3 and Wii launch. Given that the PS3 releases on a Friday, and the Wii a Sunday, there's really only one Saturday where the PS3 will have an advantage for casual shoppers. (Hardcore fanboys will be lined up Thursday and Saturday nights regardless). The big day is Black Friday, which, oddly enough, is the subsequent Friday after both systems are released.
