Just how good is this guy? I saw the match against Somoa Joe and it was awesome. I saw maybe two other matches of his...equally impressive, but it's hard to judge a guy based on three matches. I have heard nothing but outstanding things about him over the years. If I am not mistaken he has the most five star matches of any wrestler (since those have been tracked) and I read where he was only two votes short of being unanimously voted into the Observer Hall of fame.

Well, I suppose I did. I guess I am just looking to read what others have to say about him, more than anything.

Check out All Japan in 1993. Kobashi was having great matches with people like Misawa, Kawada and even my boy Kikuchi every week/month. Even in these tail end years of his career, he was having great matches with Samoa Joe (as noted) and in Pro Wrestling NOAH. True, he's not as good of a wrestler anymore, but as we all saw, he can still go. I got to see his tag match in ROH in Philly with Joe, Low-Ki and Homicide, right after his NYC match with Samoa Joe. That was a great match, even if it was overshadowed by the NYC contest.

This year as well Kobashi had awesome matches with Marufuji and KENTA. The Marufuji match you can now get on DVD in NOAH's first official US DVD release. Even if you can't get the DVD, it's a great match and worth seeing.

Kobashi is my favorite Japanese heavyweight. While he's produced some quality stuff in his more recent years in NOAH(and his ROH matches), you have to check out his 1993-1998 output from AJPW, when he was at peak health, to get a grasp of how truly, well-roundedly awesome he is. He just seems to have 'it'. An unquestionable great workrate, but he also gets you emotionally invested. At least he does for me and many others.
Yes, he has an amazing record of 5* matches, and I recommend you get a hold of all of them. My personal favorite of his singles matches are against Mitsuharu Misawa in Jan. 1997 and Oct. 1997, against Toshiaki Kawada in Jan. 1995 and against Stan Hansen in July 1993.

Here's ten matches of Kobashi that are tremendous. The 1/20/97 and 3/01/03 singles matches with Misawa are great and 6/9/95 tag match with Misawa vs Kawada/Taue is the best wrestling match of all time.

All Japan
1) Kenta Kobashi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa (01/20/97--Triple Crown)
2) Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi vs. Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue (06/09/95--World Tag Titles)
3) Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi (12/03/93--RWTL 93)
4) Stan Hansen vs. Kenta Kobashi (7/31/93)
5) Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi (10/15/95--World Tag Titles)
6) Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (10/21/97--Triple Crown)
7) Toshiaki Kawada vs. Kenta Kobashi (06/12/98--Triple Crown)
8) Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada & Kenta Kobashi (4/20/91)

NOAH
9) Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (GHC Title, 03/01/03)
10) Kenta Kobashi vs. Jun Akiyama (GHC Title, 07/10/04)

Hey, thanks for the match rundowns. Did Kobashi ever work against Muta?

I don't think so. Mutoh was always in New Japan while Kobashi was in All Japan (and NOAH since 1999). The dream match possiblilities of the 90's often went unrealized (until recently, when everybody's older), with Mutoh, Chono, Hashimoto, Hase, Sasaki (NJPW) never crossing paths with Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Taue, Akiyama (AJPW). Mutoh wrestled Misawa in a tag at the 7/10/04 NOAH Destiny Tokyo Dome show which was a big deal and a very entertaining match:

Mitsuharu Misawa/Yoshinari Ogawa (c.) vs. Keiji Muto/Taiyo Kea (GHC Tag Team Titles)
