Hey, wasn't the rumour that he's getting a divorce? Maybe leaving wrestling is just a step in the right direction to getting his relationship in order.

Ever since reading about his neck troubles, I had hoped that he'd retire sooner rather than later.

He'll come back...I thought he'd work a mat-based, low risk style in ECW.

I'm happy that this happened. Maybe he can get his life, body and mind straight. He doesn't need to work another match til that happens.

Please, Kurt. We all respect you, embrace you, and see you as being one of the greatest sports-entertainers of all-time. And that's why we say, with all due respect, stay away from the ring until you're absolutely 100% healthy-- or, if that's no longer possible, retire and work as an announcer, a commissioner, a road agent, manager, booker, or something. Just because you wouldn't be wrestling anymore doesn't mean you would no longer have a purpose in life. We just don't want to see you get hurt; you mean too much to all your fans.

Let's acknowledge this: Getting Kurt onto the card for Bound For Glory would instantly give that show the credibility as a big-time event that TNA's booking is failing to give it.

Having said that, I have great mixed feelings about that fact. I'd love to see TNA strengthened, but of course I don't want to see Angle taking serious risks. Could one match a couple of months removed from his injury really pose a threat to him? Only his doctors know for sure, I guess.

Not that I expect it to happen, but it would normally be the sort of thing that would be really fun to speculate about.

Yes.....and that his wife is pregnant to.

You have to wonder how bad things got in his life for his wife to want a divorce him, even though she was pregnant.

Hopefully this release will help mend Kurt's marriage as well as his body.

You know, though-- given the fact that TNA doesn't run house shows (though occasionally TNA wrestlers make appearances for ROH and small indy promotions), and that they only do one hour of television on non-pay-per-view weeks (and obviously not everyone wrestles on every show), if Kurt Angle does return to the ring, I'd kinda like to see him in TNA.

But again-- not until he's healthy enough that I wouldn't feel bad watching him, wondering when his next big injury will take place.

I think that when a man like Angle gets to the point where he's addicted to painkillers due to his multiple nagging injuries, it's time for a long break from in-ring activity. This is a guy who's had to take time off after WrestleMania for three of the past four years, and who always rushed his comeback. His career was tagged as finished after the Brock Lesnar match at 'Mania X9. He was put on "Death Watch" after Eddie passed away in November. For the good of his health, he needs to just stop for the next six months. And if he doesn't get better, he needs to stop, period. No TNA, no Japan.

Amen. TNA signing him after WWE fires him would be horrifying. It would make WWE less likely to go through with their maximum penalty when dudes are as far gone as Kurt. And it would put Kurt Angle in wrestling matches -- "Joe is gonna kill you" indeed.

It was a story carried in the Observer almost immediately following Guerrero's death. The fed put him under watch due to his near-fanatical desire to go all-out and his rapidly accumulating injuries. Plus the fused neck, of course. I believe it was pitched in the dirtsheets as "WWE puts another main eventer on "Death Watch", and if he dies the news coverage of Eddie's death will look small in comparison".

Can you confirm, Justin? I'm pretty sure that was the gist of it.

I think the Torch carried the story about an anonymous big star, and then Wade and Bruce basically acknowledged it was Kurt on their audio show. Observer also had stories about him being far more far gone than you'd imagine.

That's what I thought too. Then he tore his groin doing the pop up superplex at a HOUSE SHOW.

I echo the folks who just want to see him get things sorted out. I've had enough of great wrestlers going before their time.

Just posted on wwe.com, straight from the Gold Medalist's mouth:

Beaten and battered
By Michael Cole
August 26, 2006

“My body is so beat up and run down, I can’t even think straight,” Kurt Angle tells WWE.com in an exclusive interview Saturday concerning his early release from his contract with World Wrestling Entertainment. Angle and WWE officials mutually agreed to end Angle’s relationship with the company on Friday.

Angle says seven years of non-stop wrestling has taken a major toll on his body, his mind and his family. “I need my body to reheal and rehab, I have done this for too long without a break. I haven’t been able to really enjoy my life. I haven’t seen my family, I’ve had problems with medication - I’m just fried physically and mentally.”

Angle’s business manager David Hawk claims, “Kurt’s in a tremendous amount of pain, he’s used prescription medication to deal with it. Kurt has come to the conclusion that unless he can get in the ring without the use of pain medication then he doesn’t need to be in there. He realizes he was just endangering himself and his opponents.”

The last straw for Angle seems to have occurred on August 13th, 2006, at an ECW live event in White Plains, New York. Angle was wrestling Rob Van Dam in a match where both competitors were fueled by the passionate ECW fans. “The crowd was wild,” Angle says. “Early on in the match, I pulled my groin, but I kept going, feeding off the crowd. Then I pulled my abdominal muscle off the pelvic bone, but I kept going as the crowd grew more wild. Finally, I blew out my hamstring, but we finished the match. The crowd stood and applauded - a standing ovation and that meant so much to me.”

Ironically that would be Angle’s last match.

WWE.com asked Angle if he would ever return to competition in WWE. Angle says “I can’t tell you that right now, I need to heal up mentally and physically. Until then, I can’t even think about returning.”

But Angle says WWE Chairman Vince McMahon told him the door is always open. “Vince says when I’m ready, if I’m ever ready, to come back just sign on the dotted line. I’ll tell you if I do return I’m going back to my roots, training on the mat like my amateur days. Longevity is the key.”

Hawk seems confident Angle will be in the ring again someday.

Angle has a final message to his legion of WWE and ECW fans. “Don’t be concerned, this move was for the best. It was a privilege to be able to compete for all of you. I’d like to say thank you.”

WWE.com will continue to follow up on Kurt Angle over the next several months.

Best of luck, Kurt, and thanks for the memories. Hopefully you'll be able to recover fully after a few months of R&R -- and if you're still passionate about the wrestling biz, I think you'd be a GREAT color comentator -- or a manager who maybe steps in the ring twice a year, at Mania & Summer Slam.

And ya know, if you'd partner Angle with Shelton Benjamin and make him the manager / mouthpiece, and you could quickly develop Benjamin into a legitimate main eventer. It would be a great fit.

BTW, I know this is incredibly petty of me, but I'm a boxing fan too, and this line always kinda bugged me:

The only Olympic gold medalist in WWE history,

Actually, Muhammad Ali was a guest ref in Wrestlemania I, and Ali captured the gold medal at the Rome Olympics. Hey, TECHNICALLY, that was part of WWF/E history, so...

...yeah, I know it's petty. What can I say? I loved Ali...

Tyson never won an Olympic medal -- or even made the Olympic team. He lost in the tryouts to a guy named Henry Tillman... who also ended up going to jail for rape...

Good Lord.

If he never tries so much as a lockup again, I'll be a satisfied Angle fan. The man worked his ass off.

All I would ask of Kurt is that he return to a televised show so we call can watch the crowd say goodbye. Just walk to the ring, wave his hand, and walk away with as intact a body as he can manage.
