According to CNN (cnn.com), it looks like Maurice Clarett is in even more trouble.

Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.

"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."

He's certainly trying to join the all time pantheon of wasted talent, isn't he? Let's hope he can turn his life around before we're reading about him killing someone.

I think he might have, oh, three-to-six years or so to not have to worry about killing someone.

Also, let me be the first (here) to make the "he was just running late on his way to his Bengals-tryout"-joke.

What kind of trouble did this guy get himself into? He's got 4 loaded guns in his car, and he's wearing a bullet-resistant vest?

I keep waiting for the name of Lawrence Phillips to pop up any day now in conjunction with Clarett.

This article (nbc4i.com) has more detail about the incident. Apparently, the rifle that he was arrested with was an AK-47(!), and he also had a hatchet and an open bottle of vodka -- apparently his erratic driving is what got the cops attention and then he made the illegal u-turn.

One has to wonder just what he was planning to do with all of this stuff...

Sidenote: on that same page, there's a poll asking the question of "Who's a More Tragic-Case Buckeye: Clarett or Art Schlichter?", which Clarett is winning by a 4-to-1 margin right now.

Schlichter, for the benefit of those who don't know was an All-American QB from OSU who was a lottery pick of the Colts who pissed his career away on a compulsive gambling problem and ended up committing over 20 fraud and forgery felonies and is currently doing an long-term prison stretch.

Not to say Clarett doesn't have that type of potential, but how soon they forget.

ESPN Radio is reporting that he was in the vicinity of the home of a witness scheduled to testify against him in a trial coming up soon.

If that is the case, this guy may need to be in an institution.

Well that doesn't prove anything, maybe it has nothing to do with this witness, maybe he was just going for a heist. Who doesn't like a good heist?? I do it all the time. I usually wait until AFTER the heist to get the cops to chase me though. The way he did is much tougher to pull off, but not impossible. I give the guy some props for wanting a challenge.

Here's (sports.espn.go.com) a story by a reporter who Clarrett allegedly called in the hours before his arrest (probably while driving around with the weapons). The story recaps Clarrett's post-collegiate career and provides some insight into how he got himself into this situation. A rather sad story, really.

This morning in court they said that the assault rifle was not an AK-47 or any type of fully automatic weapon, but it WAS loaded with 30 live rounds. Yikes.

ESPN radio said he called a bunch of people just to say thank you while he was driving around. His new coach for the Arena minor league team, that writer, Lebron James, and maybe some more.

So you're driving around, open bottle of vodka, four guns, bulletproof vest, within a mile of a witnesses home that will be testifying against you, calling people to thank them for their previous support of you, and listening on the CD player to chlidrens songs as done by prison inmates.

Maybe he was just going for an oil change. Those guys at Jiffy Lube always try to screw you.

It is always amazing to me how these immensely talented people end up throwing it all away. All this guy had to do was NOT have a 40 time slower than me and he could have had a huge NFL contract. Well, that failed, but not all is lost, he could still have made his way back via NFL Europe or even the arena league. No chance now. Is it really that complicated that someone needs to go to people like this and tell them "Oh, by the way, you might NOT want to go driving around recklessly with open liquor and weapons in the neighborhood of someone who is a witness in your upcoming trial." Can anyone talk some sense into this kid? I vote for AWARulz to take a little trip, bible in hand, and let Mr. Clarett know how you are supposed to conduct yourself in this world. I don't know how much good it would do, but at this point, it couldn't hurt either.

Considering he was runnin' from the po-po and all, it's possible that his ending up near this person's house was just an amazing coincidence. He could have been taking off down random streets and whatnot. Or maybe he thought he could beat the cops to the house, who knows.

Well I think when you add in the phone calls he made and what he said in the ones we heard about, it's safe to say he was definatly planning to drive to some destination and put those guns to use. So maybe accident that he's in her neighborhood, maybe not, but someone was gonna get shot.

I think what is the most unbelievable part of this story involves Clarett at Broncos' training camp. He would tell other players before workouts "I'm going to go 'get my Goose on'". The fact that he was drinking AT CAMP before workouts is just crazy. I had never heard this story until I read the ESPN article and...wow.

Um, I heard that Marvin Lewis actually DID (does?) want Clarett in the Bengals' locker room. It was on SportsCenter yesterday, I believe.
