By now, this shouldn't be a surprise.

ESPN.com - MLB - Cubs' Wood opts against surgery to repair shoulder

But that's not what catches me eye. What intrigues me is THIS:

CHICAGO -- Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood has decided against having surgery to repair his injured right shoulder.

Wood made just four starts this season following shoulder surgery on Aug. 31 and will miss the rest of the year with a partially torn rotator cuff. He hopes to come back next season as a reliever.

Wood a reliever? He didn't do too bad his first go-around, but just because you pitch less innings doesn't make you any less injury-prone (see Gagne, Eric). Would Kerry Wood work as a permanent closer?

This is old news. We've heard the rumors about Wood being used as a relief pitcher for... well, two years now. I'm all for it - if his body is.

For some other team? Maybe. For the Cubs? What do you think?

As a set-up man, maybe a good team takes a low base/high incentive flyer on him. As a closer, I doubt a good team would run the risk of putting Wood in that role. Of course, that means he would be a plausible closer for the Cubbies.

He was in the booth with the Cubs TV announcers for an inning today and spoke about it. Brenley asked him why he would relieve - and wood said "to build up my arm" - so he has no intention of commiting to relief, just to use it if needed. He said he got advice from Pedro Martinez. OK, then.

The guy we trade away almost tosses a no-no. Wood 0 just a no.

A closer for the Cubs is just like being a starter. You only work once every five games.

I could see Wood being like LaTroy Hawkins. Keep him exclusively in middle inning relief and if he stays healthy he could potentially be dominant, the way Hawkins was as an 8th inning guy in Minnesota. But he does not have the mental makeup to be a closer. The first time someone rips a game-winning homer off him he would implode.

Someone check the list for the prize money.

Who had August 3rd as to when Wood would be out for the season?

I'll say the same thing I said on the Prior post, I didn't know Wood wasn't already out for the season.
