To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of MTV, VH1 Classic will be airing the entire first day of MTV programming. Tune in starting at Midnight on Tuesday, August 1st, and again at 9AM on Saturday, August 5th.

More (maybe) at the page that my browser won't load, http://www.vh1.com/vspot/index.jhtml?id=1537291.

I'm GUESSING they won't show the 1981 ads - too bad, because seeing those Atari 2600 ads again would be icing on the cake.

(We're going to try to tape it anyway, but Time Warner loves to shut off our DVR at random times)

Shouldn't you be putting this on beta instead of DVR? :-)

Just so you know, I had a VHS then. Top Loading, my friend.

More importantly, will they show the clouds and whatever it was for days before it started like they did back then.

They showed the first hour of MTV the other day on VH1Classic.

Pat Benetar was the SECOND VIDEO shown. Sure, we all know the Buggles.

My only issue with this is they are using modern VH1 chyron rather than classic MTV.

I immediately ran to the internets to register my disgust.

Let me add my own instant verdict as well:

O-V-E-R-P-R-O-D-U-C-E-D

Really, you'd think this wouldn't be hard to mess up, but...well, that's why they're in the television business and I just complain on the Internet.

Seems to me that Pat Benetar videos were rotated in at least twice an hour for the first five years of MTV's existence.

Are they showing the host segments? Or just the videos?

Well, MTV being MTV-- or in this case sister station of MTV being sister station of MTV-- they eschewed just rolling the footage in exchange for staking a claim to cultural (self) importance. All of the bumpers are essentially an infomercial entitled "How MTV Changed The World".

Me, I would have rather they just rolled the damn footage.

I went home over lunch and turned it on. And there was Rod Stewart in big hair and tight red pants from behind, which pretty much summed up everything I saw in that half hour.

Frightening. Very very frightening.

I call and go all in with Dennis DeYoung. Or more accurately, Dennis DeYoung's ah, er, ahem, enhancement.

In a similar vein, I have recently copied a couple of key episodes of Solid Gold to DVD: Top 40 of 1982, and 1983. There are performances by Johnny Cougar, Rick Springfield, Men at Work, Marilyn McCoo singing a Journey hit, and of course, the Solid Gold dancers.

I don't have the ability to copy DVDs directly right now, but I can maybe get one or two done right from the VHS source over a few weeks if you're interested, CRZ. The bonus is I have early 80s Canadian commercials, and they're REALLY bad.

I enjoyed seeing Rod Stewart perform two videos with the same set, a red-and-black polka dot background. I was also surprised by the majority of videos that were of performances, even ones with the instruments unplugged.

The variety too: Rod, Pat, .38 Special, Buggles, Lee Ritenour, Ultravox (but not the "Vienna" video), and Split Enz within an hour.

Good to hear. That remains a fantastic sing-along commute song.

Yes, it was played in the last hour. For anyone who missed it, they're starting it up again on Saturday morning at 9am EST.
