Thanks to the threads on this board I've discovered some new bands like Agnostic Frost and Fear. Anybody else out there you think is really good but doesn't get enough exposure/credit, and I should know about them? That seems wordy so let's go:name me a good indy/unknown band. I'll give ya one I like, Jimmy's Chicken Shack.

Well, we've had this before, but what the hey, I'll reiterate a few old suggestions I have made: (edited to add in Jaguar's very good suggestion)

-Anyone off of the Bloodshot label, but particular goodness comes from Robbie Fulks, Split Lip Rayfield, and Neko Case. The label specializes in alt-country basically, with all the acts being some derivation of that. It all goes back to Uncle Tupelo's sound basically, except that Split Lip is actually more of a speed-bluegrass sound.

-Speaking of Neko Case, your life is not complete until you've heard the album Mass Romantic by The New Pornographers and reveled in their pure pop joy. If you like old Cheap Trick, you'll love this one.

-Even more beautiful pop joy comes from Edson, a perfect pop band from Sweden off of the Summersound label. There's a hint of Belle and Sebastian at work here.

When you're telling us about these bands can you try and clarify the types of music they play? I'll probably try and find most them anyway, but I like to know what kind of music they play.

* I'm not really sure if Dreamworks counts as an indie (I don't believe any of the Big Five owns them), but Blinker the Star is just great indie-pop.

* At the Drive-In's good, too. "Relationship of Command" was one hell of an emo/punk/indie-rock album (on Grand Royal).

* Oh, if you can find The (International) Noise Conspiracy, get some of their stuff. Punk-influenced garage rock, with socialist lyrics.

* And even though they're on Interscope now, try and get ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Their earlier stuff sounds like their current stuff, and it's amazing indie-rock. Not quite as angry as At the Drive-In, but in the same vein. (You may have heard "Another Morning Stoner", off their new album.)

That help? I got most of my recommendations from friends and roommates, which is a hell of a lot better than the crap MTV spews out. Although MTV2 does have good stuff. If you get MuchMusic, The Wedge is nice. Too bad it has a shitty timeslot: Fridays at 10 PM, rebroadcast at 3 AM.

drjay, if you like Int'l Noise Consp., check out Randy if you haven't already. In the same sort of vein, but I fell in love with them after they put on possibly the best live show I've ever seen. After just a 45 min. set I was tired.

Yeah, they look interesting just off the allmusic.com description.

And might I throw in Abandoned Pools? The former bassist for eels doing his solo thing. Plus, the bassist in the video for "The Remedy" is hot. And as far as printed material goes, take a look at Devil In the Woods. (That is, if you can find it.) Great mag about indie-pop.

Check out the Aquabats. They sound like DEVO and Oingo Boingo teaming up to fight space aliens.

They did the theme song for "Welcome To Eltingville" the Evan Dorkin cartoon that recently ran on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

2 bands from Boston that rock are Helicopter Helicopter, and The Jack McCoys. Helicopter Helicopter is kind of pop punk Weezer kind of sound + a hot chick. The Jack McCoys are quirky rock. The two main guys use to lead the band Godboy which is one of my favorite bands ever.

Also I here this band from New Jersey called Seor Citizen is pretty good. [/shill]

Mmm... kinda reminds me about the Anniversary. Their first album (on Heroes & Villans) was new-wave emo with male/female vocals. But their new one (on Vagrant) is apparently more experimental pop.

Hey Snooge, have you ever seen The Gentlemen? I caught them while I was in New York and was quite impressed, and I'm pretty sure they're from Boston.

On a hardcore front, I was always a fan of Sick of it All and Quicksand (well, Quicksand is kind-of POST hard-core, but still...). Walter Schreifels' new band, Rival Schools, is getting a little press, but they are freakin' awesome.

Yes, they are named after the capcom game.

Mmm... weren't a couple of members of Rival Schools in Civ? And on the post-hardcore route, of course, Fugazi. Should be remembered for their music as much as, if not more, for their politics ($10 CD's, $5 shows, etc.).

Usually i would recommend all to catch a ZEKE show for a kick
ass live punk show. Unfortunetly the broke up about two weeks
