Season 5 and half of season 6 were pretty not good by Season 1-4 standards. But as soon as the series took a left turn into the whole Vinnick/Santos setup, it was a shot of adrenaline for the show since Sorkin in his 4-year run had before only showed us minor glimpses of campaign life, it was something that felt new. Season 7 was the best year that West Wing had artistically since Season 4, it's just that by then the ratings were too fargone to reflect that.
