SNL = Saturday Night Live

I'm talking about the part of the show right after someone yells "Live from New York... " and they introduce the host for their monologue and to announce the musical guest.

Right now my vote is for the time Steve Martin was on and went into a song routine about how he was going to give it his all and do his best. He walked backstage and was inspiring others to join in the song and promise to have a great show.

When he got to Chris Farley, Chris sang out, "I'm not gonna get liquored-up tonight!" Steve gave him a look as if to say "Yeah, good luck with that."

So, what was your favorite?

I'm trying to think about when Jerry Seinfeld hosted.....I think it was after Seinfeld had ended its run- I want to say he talked about what he did now that he was retired and he talked about watching USAM (Prime Time Comedies in the Morning!). I loved that because I watched it too. I just can't remember if he did that bit on SNL or not (I want to say he did). If he did, then that's my #1.

After thinking about it, my favorite is from 4/10/99. The episode was John Goodman with musical guest Tom Petty. John spends the opening monologus trying to convince people that this show isn't a rerun from 1991. In desperation, he brings out Jimmy Fallon, who is in his first year.

John Goodman: This is not a rerun! [ looks offstage ] Jimmy! Here's Jimmy Fallon, he's a new castmember. Jimmy, tell the folks about tonight's show.

Jimmy Fallon: Oh, it's a great show. John Goodman and Tom Petty. Yeah, I remember I was in the 8th grade when it first ran. I said, "One day, I'm gonna be on that show!"

Here's a transcript:
http://snltranscripts.jt.org/98/98qmono.phtml

Or there's another good one, also with John Goodman (I'm not obsessed with John Goodman, these are just the only ones I can remember right now). This one was May 6, 2000. Goodman comes out drunk, not making any sense. He mentions that "Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas" is out, "which is weird, because I don't even remember filming that" (he wasn't in it). He gets the band to play the Flintstones theme song while he dance on stage. The camera cuts to the back where everyone is embarrased with the job he's doing. Except Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, and musical guest Neil Young, who think it's the best monologue ever.

One last one I liked was Norm McDonald hosting 10/23/99, two years after being fired from the show. He tries to figure out how he could have gone from being so unfunny that he wasn't even allowed in the building, to being funny enough to host.

My favorite was when Christopher Reeve came out on stage in a pink bunny suit...he said something to the effect that since everyone saw him in a costume in the movies, it was nice for him to finally wear his normal clothes for once.

Absolutely brilliant. I loved how he could make fun of himself and keep a straight face.

Second place goes to the Rock's first SNL appearance.

I enjoyed the one where Martin Lawrence told the women to wash their vaginas regularly. It was never broadcasted uncut again after the first time it was on.

And anytime the host took questions from the crowd, I knew the segment would be pretty funny.

I loved Kirstie Alley's appearance, shortly after Cheers had gone off the air, when the rest of the SNL cast dressed up as Cheers' characters to try to make her feel better, they ended up singing the Cheers' theme song.

There have been many great episodes, this is the first that popped into my head.

I loved the Luke Perry one where he was totally stinking up the place. Then Phil Hartman appeared as Obi Wan Kenobi and told Luke to use the force.

The John Goodman ones were all pretty good. I remember him talking about drinking bleach in the second one you mentioned Boffo.

The time Mike Meyers hosted and walks around backstage with Lorn Micheals, and they show all the cast members being whipped was a good one, and the time Heather Graham kept getting hit on by cast members was funny too.

The best was the Steve Martin song and dance. The rest of the show was blah, but that had to be the best monologue, ever.

Stallone's monologue, where Tracy Morgan came up behind him dressed as Clubber Lang and yelled something like "I told you I wasn't goin' away! I want a rematch Balboa!"

I remember that Stallone one. Except the part I remember is Jim Breuer as Mickey yelling that he was a bum whenever a joke bombed.

Two that spring to mind:

Joe Mantegna-some dad started taking his kid out of the audience because they thought it was going to be Joe MONTANA. Mantegna takes the kid aside and tells him to take a seat or he'll have things done to Montana.

James Woods-Woods starts doing his monologue about how he plays such creepy characters but is really a normal guy...cut to a woman in her bed saying to her hubby, "That's the guy I saw outside our window the other night", then police getting alerts from all over the place. Woods pulls Nora Dunn over for a hug, who looks terrifed. The monologue ends as police slowly approach him from behind.

I agree about james Woods. It was the best opening monolgue. The look on Nora Dunn's face really sold it.

The best monologues are usually the ones delivered by actual stand-up comedians who actually know how to speak in front of an audience and usually just rehash part of their stand-up routine. The old episode where Eddie Murphy (who was then a cast member) hosted due to Nick Nolte's illness featured a great Murphy monologue that basically just recycled some of the bits from his stand-up act.

I hate those monologues, because half the time they're cleaned up for tv and not near as funny as they are. They always seem too stilted.

Alec Baldwin doing his Henry Hill routine around the back of the studio, but THAT wasn't the great part. The great part was him walking to Lorne and Paul McCartney right where we hear Lorne say "I just assumed George would have given you the money!" which was of course a callback to offering the Beatles $3000 to come on the show back in 1976, but totally unexplained. Either you got the joke or you didn't.

And why am I the first person to bring up The Ghost of Tom Hanks meeting The Ghost of Abe Lincoln (played by a young Bob Odenkirk, btw)?

"You mean.. all that pain.. what happened backstage.. that I bumped my knee? I'm.. dead?"

"No, Tom, you're an incredible pussy!"

Sherilyn Fenn, because she plugged her new film, " ...'Two Moon Jnnction', in which I appear mostly naked." Got some nice applause for that.
