Y'know, I think it comes down to Chris Reeve. It's unpleasant to say, but really, the first two movies get a free pass because of the terrible stuff that happened to him. It's sad, because he really was great in the role, but even Superman 1 is horrifically campy if you look back at it now, even in a way that Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Jaws isn't. That whole monologue in Lois' head while they're flying is absolutely vomit-inducing. That Otis dude isn't funny at all; he looks like he was pulled from the cast of "Mama's Family". I like the three-act structure of it, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. As far as Hackman goes, he was all right but he lacked one moment of bas-assery on par with Spacey's deadpan response to Posey's query "will billions really be killed?" Just brilliant, and wonderfully Luthor.

Also, thanks Vile1. I for got about the kiss of forgetting. Retarded.

I think Superman is ultimately a really good movie, but yeah, it's especially that monologue as Lois is flying with Superman that really tends to take me out of the story every time. That's the DVD chapter I had to skip even 20 years after I hadn't seen it since I was a kid.

I think people just love Superman II because of "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!" moreso than anything else. Zod was the perfect campy villain, in search of Earth's capital- Houston. Still, this one also has a great story once you get past the camp.

Both movies aren't perfect, but they can be watched for both the right and the wrong reasons.

Then again, I just saw Superman III on TV the other day, and I think it's the comparison to that which makes people think Supermans I & II were perfect.

I watched it yesterday. I liked it, I had a good time, but, to me, Superman 2 was better, Batman Begins was much much better. In short, it was a good Superman movie but not mind-blowing or anything.

I thought Kevin Spacey was fantastic as Lex Luthor. The special effects are simply stunning.

On the negative side, the Luthor master plan was extremely flawed and the storyline with kid bored me to tears.

So, like I said, I liked it but I didn't find it awesome or anything.

I'm dismayed at the marketing of this movie...there's a massive amount of press and toys out for this movie that are geared toward kids. I don't think this is a suitable movie for children under the age of 12. Maybe it's the old fogey showing up in me (I may be 28 but it has to come sometime) but still. The (physical) violence in this one isn't slapstick, to say the least.

Yeah, take that! (thatvideosite.com)

But the white beams from Zod/Ursa/Non (repelled by a Kryptonian PALM, apparently) and the whole disappearing/reappearing act were even worse. :-)
