Pretty decent show.

Jim Cornette promises lots of announcements next week! ANNOUNCEMENTS!!! I'm all a-tingle!

Christopher Daniels & A.J. Styles vs. The Diamonds in the Rough existed mostly to show off a variety of nifty Styles/Daniels double-team moves, which is fine with me. Simon's interference brought out the Amazon Neutralizer to toss him around. (Wouldn't she be a more effective neutralizer if she came out with her team so she could prevent interference before it happened? My guess is that Styles and Daniels don't find her color-coordinated enough.)

Styles & Daniels are completely dominant in their first title defense -- but hey, it's against DitR, so who wouldn't be? Maybe next week they'll get some real competition, like Shark Boy & D-Ray 3000.

Monty Brown vs. Chasyn Rance is a total squash dominated by Slick Johnson's increasingly non-regulation ref gear. This match serves mostly as an excuse to introduce an LAX/Monty angle, which segues quickly into an LAX/Killings angle. Killings and Monty had no contact, so perhaps my first thought (that they're putting together Killings/Brown vs. LAX) is misguided.

Samoa Joe vs. Senshi vs. Sonjay Dutt: Well, this was as good a way to get the title off of Joe as anything, even if it felt like "oh, wait -- Joe's still got the title?" What, no PPV match? (Maybe they shouldn't have had him win it for a second time? Well, then Daniels would have it, which would cause a whole nother set of problems.)

So Senshi's the new champ. I dunno -- I don't feel like Senshi's been established very well to that segment of the viewing audience that doesn't follow ROH or indies and wasn't watching TNA during the weekly PPV era. On the other hand, this opens up the X Division to a bunch of fresh match possibilities, which is a welcome change.

Fun match with some nice stuff from Senshi and a continuation of the Joe/Steiner feud. (And where will that go? Joe already beat Scott -- does Scott get beat again? Does he "get his win back"? Does either option help anyone?)

So, yeah. There you go.

--K

***EDIT!!! I forgot all about the James Gang/Team 3D confrontation, 'cause...um, 'cause it was the James Gang and Team 3D. Runt (aka Spike) returned and the 3Ders laid down a challenge -- the 3 of them vs. the James Gang and a partner of their choice. Tenay and West seemed VERY EXCITED at the possibility that Bullet Bob Armstrong might be the James Gang's third guy, to which I can only say HOLY SHIT YOU ARE IDIOTS. This may be the only situation in memory where Sean Waltman would be a WELCOME SURPRISE as a mystery partner.

It's good to see a newer breed of X division guys get a chance to step up to the plate.

I really hope that TNA puts together a Jay Lethal/Senshi program for the X title.

I think it's time to disband the Diamonds in the Rough. Elix Skipper deserves so much more.

Based on what I've seen, I disagree. He's inconsistent. Flashy, yes. That cage-top walking huracanrana may be the best TNA stunt we've seen. But in the ring, he's just as liable to flub a spot than hit it, and he didn't fly that high when he was solo. I'm not sure the X Division can take another solo guy, which suggests they may be ready for an XD tag title. For me, he works best in a tag situation like Triple X.

It's always a bad sign when a company has all their belts change hands in a week. Reminds of the Survivor Series 2002 sweep from a few years ago.

I hated the booking of the X-Division match. So, let's see, Samoa Joe is the undefeated, unstoppable champion, he loses in Ultimate X to Daniels (which, I'm sorry, but does count as a loss.) It's cool and all that they can say Joe is unpinned, but dude lost the title. Then, he beats Daniels for no discernible reason other than to hot shot the belt for ratings. He promptly does nothing with belt, and then loses the belt in an ANGLE ADVANCEMENT MATCH. Another example of TNA marginalizing and hurting the X-Division. Between this and the Nash angle, what once was TNA's signature has been severely weakened.

The booking of Joe says they have no idea how to get out of his undefeated streak. Which means it will probably end as bad as Goldberg's did.

Joe should have never lost the X-Division belt in the first place, have him keep it, win the World title and then declare it vacant and run a massive international tournament. That would have been a much better scenario.

Also, Low-Ki was not built up enough to be champ. Sure, he has a following, but to the casual audience he's new. He's wrestled maybe twice on TV since his comeback and had no angle to speak of. Then he wins the title by beating Sonjay Dutt, who's lower tier.

Of course, Dutt even being in the match makes a mockery of Sunday's booking. Low-Ki beats Dutt in a number 1 contender's match at the PPV, then in that same week beats Dutt for the title on TV. That's insulting booking.

If they were going to make that switch an angle advancement, it would have worked better in that scenario to put the title on Alex Shelley. Him pinning Dutt makes him a sneaky heel, he can then keep the title through inteference by Kevin Nash, all the while they run down the X-Division.

Anyway, that booking indicates point one why TNA will never be an alternative to the WWE.

And don't even get me started on the World Title stuff.

You are probably right so that way TNA can ride the coat tails of the DX Reunion too.

I've got no problem with Low Ki holding the X Title. The X Title is like the Cruiserweight title in WCW, it's not really their to be a focal point in a story or angle, it's just there to have nice matches and Low Ki can have nice matches. Even though Joe has been on a roll even in his storylines the X Title was just kind of there and not really a focal point. I say let guys who haven't show they have any ability to talk like Low Ki, Sabin, Dutt, Lethal, Petey and Elix feud for the X Title. The X Title would be wasted on guys like Joe, Daniels, AJ, and Shelley who should be integral parts of storylines and angles.

According to the ratings, this show pulled in a really strong number in the male demographic. And correct me if I'm wrong, but they didn't have the Ultimate Fighter lead-in either.

Good news for the TNA folks. Hopefully if they stay consistent with that number, they can get an additional 30 minutes.

It's all about baby steps.

I think Low Ki has proven he can talk fine which he did in ROH as part of the Rottweillers. Also his video promos TNA made hyping his return. He's got a cool kind of base badass voice.

The fact of the matter is that TNA shouldn't have put the X title back on Joe right as he was basically leaving the X division. So I'm glad they put it on someone who will be in the X division for the time being and defend it as well. I hope Low Ki gets a better reign than he did in 2002 though.
