So, remember back when Walt warns Shannon (The-W)?

I remember two different times when Walt said something in reverse to Shannon. One time he said something along the lines of, "They're coming soon, they're near." The other time, as discussed in the thread above, he says, "Don't push the button. The button's bad." There may have been other times as well, but these are the only two I remember.

So, in light of the season 2 finale, what does this mean? I guess the Others did come soon, although I'm not sure how many days passed between Walt's warning and the initial encounter between the two groups.

But what about his warning not to push the button? I can only assume this is the same button that everyone has been obsessed with. I think we're supposed to believe not pushing the button would basically spell doom for the planet (or at least the island), but knowing the writers of this show, I still have some teeny tiny doubts in the back of my head. Was this warning by Walt just a red herring?

Seems to me that the Others wanted the button to not be pushed. First, Fake Henry tells Locke nothing happened when he didn't push it, though obvously he did push it. Then when it didn't get pushed, and all the crazy lights and noise happened, the Others didn't seem particularly freaked out, scared, or even surprised. They covered their ears and everything, but it seemed like they were sort of expecting it.

So, Walt's message that the button's bad could have been the Others using him and his mysterious 'powers' (possibly electromagnetic in nature and thus amplified by the Island) to start putting in the idea that the button shouldn't be pressed.

However, why was he speaking backwards? Seems counterproductive to sending a message to someone.

Also, if they didn't want to button to be pushed why didn't Henry just run away instead of pushing the button and coming back to Locke's side.

My thought is that they wanted to be far, far away from the hatch whenever the button ceased to be pushed. Large and intense electromagnetic discharges have been known to adversely affect one's mind and body. It wouldn't do much good for any of the Others, especially Fake Henry, the apparent leader, to be in the vicinity and come down with the electromagnetic "Sickness." Too bad for Charlie, Locke and Eko, who WERE there.

So, that was a bit of a rant, but Lost will do that to ya.

The white light and the noise occurred not because the button wasn't pushed, but because Desmond used the failsafe to 'shut it down'. Unless the Others knew Desmond would come back (which, while doubtful, they could possess some sort of foresight ability), I don't think they expected anyone to find that key and know how to use it. I got the interpretation that the White Light surprised Gale, but he didn't seem particularly concerned by it, though.

That said, by not pushing the button, that would allow them to be found, so Walt might have been warning them not to push the button to help them be rescued. I agree that Gale wanted Locke to not push the button, though I have a feeling his motives were different, and we'll find them out in September.

One thing to remember about Gale's actions during Lockdown is that he still hadn't been confirmed as an Other or not. When Locke questioned him about why didn't Gale kill him when he had the chance, and Gale gave him the speech about Locke being special, I thought the obvious reason Gale behaved was that he didn't want to throw suspicion on himself, especially knowing that Ana Lucia, Sayid, and Charlie would return having found a balloon and a grave. That's the same reason he told Locke and Jack that if he was an Other he'd lead his friends into an ambush. He was trying to establish some credibility to ingratiate himself into the group. You'll notice that Michael isn't released to free Gale until after the group figures out that he's an Other.

Besides, Henry couldn't run away during the lockdown because of the blast doors. He was just as trapped in there as Locke was.

But I do agree. Gale wanted to be out of the hatch when Locke decided to not push the button. Or if not away, he wanted to be locked in the armory where he'd be relatively safe provided there weren't any sharp metal object laying around.

I'm just hoping Desmond survives and is added to the cast next season. I'm already more interested in him and his backstory than I am in half of the regular cast.

Walt's warning always struck me as weird. He said 'the button is bad,' and the Lostaways always referred to entering the numbers as 'pushing the button,' but it was inputing numbers into a computer, not really 'pushing a button.' This might just be my nitpicking, but perhaps Walt is really warning them not to do something else that will come up in Season 3.
