I guess I just have a big problem with what the NCAA is doing regarding this fight. So for anyone not in the know, this kid plays football for Notre Dame and is a decent player. Pro potential for sure. But he's also an amatuer boxer. He's going to do a pro fight now, for a six figure purse in Madison Square Garden.

Now the NCAA has said, ok by us. This is the same group that fought Jeremy Bloom for YEARS to keep him from making dime one off of skiing. The difference they say is that you can earn money from another sport, you just can't take any endorsement money.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Zbikowski cause he's earned this. But I just feel terrible for Bloom after all he went through. It's the same thing in my view. Should have been handled the same.

How's it the same? Bloom didn't earn the money (in question) through competition, he earned it through endorsements. Zbikowski is earning it through competition, like Chris Weinke, Ricky WIlliams, Doug Johnson and countless others did through playing pro baseball before or whle playing NCAA Football.

Not saying I disagree that it's ALL crappy, but don't say they are the same because they are obviously not.

I don't like this because he's a weapon on punt returns plus he is a good safety on a team where the defensive backfield was a glaring weakness last season. Why risk that when the potential is there for Notre Dame to be a Top 5 program this season, and, if they survive a difficult opening 4 weeks (at Georgia Tech, Penn State, Michigan, at Michigan State [thank God that game is a road game]), they could be a national title contender. Also seeing UCLA on the Notre Dame schedule just doesn't seem right. 3 Acadamy season as well due to the 12 game rule.

The difference, from what I recall, is that endorsements pay for your equipment in skiing. Without endorsements, he would have been at a huge disadvantage. And they were also limiting his career options, saying that he couldn't make money modeling.

Well I guess I mean that they are the same in that both kids had a shot to earn some money in another athletic sport. In Blooms case, unfortunatly, the money has to come from endorsments. No other way to get the funds to train, and no big payday from competing. I just don't see where the harm is in this. Should he be punished because the sport he choose doesn't give out big paydays? Or because he wanted to compete in an event that is for the glory of himself and his country and no money? I would think this is something more in line with what college athletics is all about.

I mean seriously if you're worried about someone doing something that could harm the image of the NCAA, then why would you allow one kid to get into pro boxing, a notoriously corrupt sport, and deny another a chance to be fully ready for the Olympics?

I can see where this would supposedly be a slippery slope thing, but they should have made an exception for Bloom. Or they should be telling Zbikowski no. The stance should be all one way or all the other.

I would assume that the reason the rule is in place has nothing to do with the image of other sports or any of that. I assume that if endorsement money for other activities was allowed, the fear would be that it would open a massive loophole for boosters to be able to pay football players (by simply saying the endorsement is for some other activity besides football).

That said, I think the argument could be made that players shouldn't be prevented from getting endorsements, regardless of the reason.
